A/T High Temperature Warning Pulling Offroad Teardrop?

Where did you find this information?

 

They describe it as integrated engine/transmission oil cooling. Basically, it uses the coolant to extract heat. A step backward IMHO. That was the way older vehicles cooled the trans. I looked at the system (as have many of us on this forum) and quickly determined the lack of auxiliary cooling or a takeoff for adding one.

 

That said, I may risk my warranty on the transmission if I can find a reputable shop to install a system. The dealer would not comment on installing one.

Just a guess could the trans be starving for fluid ? I mean your in reverse up a steep grade !

 

I had it happen again this weekend. Same teardrop trailer, different hill. This hill wasn't that steep. I'm wondering if it's just my Tundra. Its pretty clear that if I'm going to back up something with a trailer - I'm always going to have to use 4lo

 

Happened on my silverado - with a tranny cooler (etc).

Not that steep of a driveway, the last few feet was a slight incline more than the rest of the driveway. Temp was climbing..

was recommended to put in to 4lo - I was skeptical - but it went up it with no issue. no heat build up afterwards.

If backing for a short distance - will use the regular gearing. if there is an incline, get most of the way there, then do 4 lo for the rest.

 

I agree with you. I can back the trailer up the same driveway all day long in my FJ cruiser. My Tacoma also had no problem. Feeling like my brand new Tundra with less than 4,000 miles needs to go to the toyota dealership for an inspection....

 

We owners need to keep hammering our dealers about this. It might lead to an actual solution from Toyota.

love the secondary cooling system idea...would love to know how efficient this might be at cooling ATF.... currently thinking about mocking this up myself....i need some time off from work...

 

I guess this is another way the stealership makes money to have you go in more frequently to get a ATF change.

 

Is anybody sending off to an analyzer? Is this even an option with ATF yet?

 

Yes, Blackstone (and others) will do an analysis on ATF.

 

I pull a 29’ travel trailer and never had this issue with my 2017 Tundra. Now I have the same truck, but a ‘20 and I’ve gotten that light 3 times now, going forward. I ordered an A/T Cooler and will install it in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I’ve added an OBD2 module and the OBD Fusion app and monitor my temps. There’s no way in hell that Toyota could’ve made a dumber decision with their engineering.

This was on flat ground going to the coast, with the trailer...

Wow. That's high. You're going to want to do frequent transmission drain+fill's at that rate. With only 900 miles you may want to back off on towing until the truck is broken in.. Not sure what the break in period is for 2020's though.

 

I have a 2016 TRD PRO and tow a off-road tear drop. I haven't had any problems towing in Cali/Arizona. My temps with towing and without towing usually sit in the 190s (Superguage) But a little preventative bolt-ons aren't a bad thing. So now my question.

SDHQ has a AB60 transmission pan it adds a few quarts of fluid and supposedly keeps it cooler.

1. Would this be a good investment or is it snake oil or not worth the time/effort with little return(ie CAI)
2. I heard that removing the pan is a pain and not worth the time (changing filter etc.) would it be worth it to change to a more efficient pan?
3. Would an additional cooler be a better investment?

 

You can use the fusion obd app to monitor torque converter lock up. Pulling my trailer I switch to 4th or 5th to get the torque converter to lock up and keep the transmission temps down. Sucks that you have to do that but it does work.

 

I'm at 6500 miles now and I just think that the temps are way to high, towing or not. I have a transmission oil cooler kit coming in soon. It's supposed to put my temps back down where they're supposed to be.

I have a 2020 trd pro with about 8000 miles. Towing a 3500 21ft camper, 4500 with cargo passengers and such. Ive towed it probably 2000 of those miles hwys, mtns, backroads. Just had to back about 20ft up a fairly steep hill for a campsite. The tranny fluid light came on and I continued to back up and adjust the trailer for about 10 min (not constant pedal pressure) any hoo- kinda surprised and began to search-- anyone who did the cooler- did it fix it? Going to change the fluid and oil asap, but really, wth? 55k truck with tried and true drivetrain? I hope so
