Secondary air injection pump failure with valves stuck open

Have a 2006 tundra. Engine light on. Code shows secondary air injection pump has problems. Has anyone had success in getting Toyota to cover the replacement cost for a faulty secondary air injector pump and sticking valves? Case action covers costs for 2007-2011 tundra with problem but problem existed before 2007.

 

All you can do is get a bypass kit and be done with it.

Information that may be useful for anyone experiencing this problem:
1. Toyota pays a warranty rate of $1495.67 to the dealer to repair this problem if under warranty. According to the technical service bulletin (http://www.autosafety.org/sites/default/files/imce_staff_uploads/T-SB-0160-11.pdf) number of hours to repair: 4 not 6 hours like my dealer tried to charge. Do not let the dealer rip you off with some ridiculous charge of any amount over $1600 plus tax.
2. Because I currently have 2 Toyota products and just sold a third one, this fact pursuanted Toyota to try to keep my loyalty with a "goodwill" offer to help off set the expense of repair for this faulty secondary air injector and stuck values on my 2006 Tundra.
3. Even though intermediate Toyota representatives told me this was a non-negotiable offer, I stated it was unacceptable and made a point of stating to my original Toyota representative on our second phone conversation, my loyalty needed a higher % of expense covered by Toyota. The original goodwill offer was changed to a higher percentage after a lengthy pause in conversation.
4. Never did they admit to the problem of defective parts that allow moisture intrusion. I even stated I had documented cases from the Center for Auto Safety. Did not matter. I stated how the loss of acceleration while entering a interstate highway almost resulted in my getting hit. Did not matter. Only thing that mattered or made a difference in my case was securing my loyalty which I admit was teetering on on the edge of total disintegration.

So I have the same exact issue, have had it going on for quite a while. Except now the secondary pump has stopped working all together. So right away my Tundra goes into limp mode as soon as I start the engine. I would rather hear the loud vacuum noise the pump used to make for 30 seconds instead of being in limp mode. Does anyone know if the pump can just be replaced or is there something more going on and replacing it wouldn't help. Right now i have to warm up my truck past 105 degrees, turn it off, unhook the battery terminal, wait 60 seconds, hook it up back up then go about my business. Its a pain in the ass. Plus they aren't warranteeing any of the '06 failures. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also does anybody know how difficult it is to replace that little pump. I would like to do it myself.

 

One of the two pumps usually goes bad on the 2nd gens. Forgot which one. Not sure about 1st gens. Usually it's just the one pump. In every case that I came across on other forums was one pump clean as a whistle and the other was fracked up due to water/condensation getting inside. If not corrected soon, I've seen where exhaust manifolds had to be removed due to corroded stuck valve/valves because of the bad AIP, which at that point becomes a more serious issue. I have also come across instances where the offending pump was removed, taken apart, cleaned up and put back in. AIP's are starting to show up on Amazon now:

Hewitt technologies Inc. has bypass kits. plug and play. just did mine couple days ago. saved me thousands from dealer.

 

I truly think that most of the AIP issues occur in high humidity states. Worse if you live in a high humidity state and off road a lot in mud, muddy water, etc. I'd like to see a break down from members here that have had the dreaded AIP failure by state, year of your Tundra, miles?, off road??, Never off road?? I thrive off stats, so let Tundras.com become the 1st forum that actually approaches the AIP failure issue from a scientific standpoint instead of anecdotal problems. Worth a try???

 

I live in Hawaii. It can get humid. My 2006 has 60k on her. Bypass module was 5min. install was quick. You do need to take front wheels off to get a great angle on installing the by pass plates. That can run you 1hr. Hope this helps for your stats .

 

I have a 2007 tundra. This just happen to me last week. Took it in to dealership & it was covered up till 150,000 miles. I just made the cut. I got 140,000.

 

You Tube has a great video on how to change your secondary air injection pump, along with the check and diverter valves. It covers the 06 4.7 tundra. Three parts video, he gives a complete part list, where the cheapest place to buy. And explains the process, cost, and steps needed to fiz yourself.

 

Hello every one. First time posting here. Dealing with the same issue here on an 05 tundra. I called Hewitt today and they recommended the G2 bypass kit as it is more likely to pass emissions test, and prevent any other CL’s in the future. Unfortunately G2 is $400. Do you guys think I would be good with the g1 at $190?

I've read in other places there are inline water filters you can install to reduce the amount of moisture reaching the pump, moisture being the primary cause for failure.

For those of us who haven't seen this failure yet, has anyone seen a thread with more details for installing a water filter as described, or am I crazy? I can't seem to find using Search.

 

Friendly FYI my truck has always been in the hot desert. It makes me doubt that humidity is the issue.

 

Anybody out there consider the second generation kit for their first generation truck? Did you all get the first generation kit, and how is it working for you? Thank you

 

I’ve got the plug/play hewitt bypass kit on my 06 4.7 along with the proxy pack and everything works good. No check engine lights.

Sir. Are you stealing my secondary job of "thread revival noticer"?

 

My 2012 Toyota Tacoma the secondary pump went bad. You could not drive it, could only go 30 mph down the highway. Cost was over 600.00 to replace the pump. I call Toyota and there was no recall on the pump. A few months later I received notice of complete refund for the pump cost plus labor from Toyota. Not a bad deal at all.

I don’t know if this is the same thread, but those are the filters I was talking about that got sold out from multiple major suppliers, due to a thread on T4arrrrgg.

 

Totally believe you. I've read moisture getting to the pump accelerates the failure, and SAI pump failure tend is more of a problem in high-humidity areas. I don't know how accurate it is because I can't recall which Tundra site I was on when I was reading that, so I can't say what that person's background was. Wherever it was, it was potentially the same place I'd read you can install an inline trap or filter somewhere to capture water before it reaches the SAI for improved longevity.

We're almost at the age now where a secondary system like that is destined to fail anyway. But if a simple $2-$20 water trap would help with longevity, I'm all about installing it.

edit - Now I'd read the linked site at the page FrenchToasty posted, it seems like maybe the filter disintegrating into the SAI could be a cause.
