Is there a handheld tuner available yet ?

I asked this same question on the Tacoma World site when I had my Tacoma. After two years and no handheld, I finally gave up on the Tacoma and traded on a Tundra.

Funny thing is... I see the same overwhelmed customer service and tuning chaos here on this site.

Why not streamline and simplify everything by developing a handheld tuner so there is no more babysitting via emails and such ?

He used to do the handheld, and went the route of the VF tuner software for multiple reasons.
    No more handhelds.

Ok, so Mat attempted to explain Direct Shift and Gearlock in the email he sent today. Maybe I am dense idk but I still don't understand what is the difference between the two.

Both of them sound like if you put it in S mode then the truck will stay in whatever gear you have selected regardless of what you do with the throttle.

Does anybody understand this to work differently then how I understand it??

Direct Shift -- when you upshift (S Mode), the transmission upshifts instantly. No delay.

Gear Lock - Transmission will not downshift automatically, unless below 1500 rpm. You can floor the pedal all you want, transmission will not downshift on its own. You have to manually downshift.

Forgot to add: When Direct Shift is enabled, the transmission will not upshift automatically. You have to upshift it manually. (S Mode)

I didn't need someone to copy what he wrote and repost it. I need someone to interpret it for me. Because they sound like they do the same thing. Expect maybe direct shift does faster shifts or something

S mode is just a gear limiter. It’ll still downshift.

Gear lock forces it to stay in the gear you select

direct shift speeds up the shift times when manually changing gears. If you start downshifting in S mode, there’s a delay before that shift actually takes place.

So then as you understand it, the only difference is how fast it will shift.

With either mode, it stays in whatever gear I want

    That how you see it?

Direct Shift is upshifting done manually. No delay. Faster upshift.

    Gear Lock prevents downshifting.

This is the simplest I can interpret it.

I believe they are two separate options you can have one or the other or both or none.

Yes, I understand they are two separate options. I asked for both because I don't understand what the difference is between them

So if I am using Direct Shift and I floor it, will it downshift?

When you put the truck into S Mode, this activates gearlock.
    Gearlock disables downshifts.
It will still upshift to whatever gear you set (S4, S5, etc)

DirectShift is active ONLY when you actually move the gear selector up or down (to initiate a shift).

In stock form, if you're at full throttle and you click the shifter down, it ignores you.
And in stock form, if you're at full, or high throttle and click the shifter up, it also ignores you.

Direct shift allows the shift to happen, when you request it. So you can be full throttle at 2500 RPM, shift up, it does, right away.

Try s mode stock. Play with the shifter, you'll see it will ignore your command to shift up or down, unless you meet certain conditions (throttle, engine speed, etc).

With direct shift, the transmission cannot ignore you.

Also with direct shift, stop the truck. Put it into s1. Then, before moving, shift up to S2. Now you start in 2nd from a stop.

What's the next step in this particular update? Will these go out via email or via vFTuner?
