Looking for tow mirrors!!!

This may belong in the mods section, but here goes.

The first part was easy. Remove the door panel, disconnect the wiring harness' and put aside. Disconnect the mirror harness (if equipped with
power/heat). Remove the mirror.
Old and new mirror side by side.

The Dodge mirror has a similar base but it is taller and wider. Here are additional pictures of the individual mirrors.
I did update my spacers while I had the mirrors off. It looks like this now. You can also see the base that was made for the mirror. It was cut out from a mud flap.
Here you can see that the forward hole has to be extended to fit the dodge mirror.

I was wrong about how i wired them up. Rather than cutting the harness from the stock mirrors I just pulled the pins from the Dodge connector, insulated them and connected them directly to the harness in the truck. Here are a few pictures of that.

thats great. I tried an old dodge mirror previously but the base was WAY different so I nixed it but did see I would have to move the front bolt hole. I know that the AC and DC models on our 1st gens are different so hopefully that doesn't screw with me too much. I get the mirrors wednesday so with work, the wife and kids, and finishing some house projects I hope to get them installed before 2022!

 

Would you take some pictures and measurements of the mounting plate and bolt spacing. They look like they would fit better than the dodge adaptation.

whelp....got the mirrors today and started dinking around with them. Had to drill another top mounting hole and just oval'd the bottom ones to the upper insides to make the studs fit better. There obviously needs to be some wiring changes but it fits fairly well. I cannot mount it though because the studs on the mirrors are too short. Tried a few different tactics to get the studs off but couldn't so not sure what to do even if I found new longer studs.

Old wiring that uses 5 of the 6 spots. Not sure if the wiring is the same for the diff trims or not.
New wiring. Has a disconnect for the heated part (I assume) and comes with an additional wiring harness or can be plugged into the main connector it appears.
Mounting rubber piece was used to line up the stud holes. There was gonna be gaps but I lined it up with the window (left straight part in picture) to try and make the mirror straight up and down.
Mounting studs are 1/2" shorter on the new mirrors from the plastic plate vs 2" on the old Tundra mirrors.

Studs BARELY show their faces. Unfortunately not enought to get nuts on them :/

Try an Acorn Type Nut similar to our lug nuts so that it can reach down and capture the threads through the drilled hole and the flat washer ring presses on the outer surface. You may need a Unibit to wallow out the hole to customize it to your Acorn Nuts Shaft.

well it would be nice to find some around town but that's a no go. I am thinking maybe I could order some coupling nuts and then thread in small bolts on the inside to tighten everything. Gotta order off Amazon though :/

 

Can you double nut it to try and pull the stud out or would that ruin it?

 

that may ruin it but on the flip side the threads that close to the base wouldn't be used so maybe I will try that. Then I just gotta find some longer studs which probably means online since HD and Lowes don't carry much

So, now I can either try and find longer studs or maybe unscrew the studs by a few threads and put a bit or spacer on the inside?

What about flipping that stud bolt and using a spacer. That way you have more shaft in the threads. Bummer on the snappage.

 

yeah I did that and looks like I may get enough threads to do that as well. But if they studs are out I may just get a M6x1 threaded rod and some nuts instead.

 

I was thinking about all thread too. Usually your local hardware store will have metric sizes. I had to get some in 10mm to hang some fans from canada. I left the extra at the shop hoping someone else would grab it thinking it's 3/8s. I'm a dick like that.

Could you take some measurements of the new mirror base along all three sides. I'm curious to see how it compares to my factory mirrors. It looks like the mirrors from my '04 AC use a different base than the '06 DC.

 

yes i'm sure they do. The headlights and I believe taillights differ on the DC vs the AC too....

Have you popped by your local Fastenal? There's one right there in CDA. Fastenal is like my 2nd home when I'm fabbing stuff up. If you get a good person behind the counter, they can usually run up just about anything you can imagine, and many of them have tons in stock.
