anyone painted the insert of a platinum grill? if you did, did you sand it down first or just went with a cleaned insert? and what paint did you use? I'm deciding between the linex or a color match from duplicolor

I just cleaned mine well, rubbed with alcohol and sprayed it with plastidip. I sprayed 4 coats of black and then 2 coats of metalizer. It came out really nice and has held up for about 1.5 years with no issues.

How difficult was it to get the back side of the horizontal slats painted evenly? I've plasti-dipped wheels and emblems before but never a grill. I was debating on doing my Platinum as well.

Not difficult at all. I took the grill off where I could clean and prep it well.

Plastidipped mine as well. I still go back and forth on whether or not I like the Pro grill or this more.

Just painted my Limited (same grille) insert this past weekend. Haven't installed it yet but it turned out way better than I expected.

Lightly sanded it down then used SEM Trim Black prep and paint in satin. https://www.semproducts.com/manage/html/public/content/techsheets/NGTB_TrimBlack_0616_WEB.pdf

Ended up doing 7 or so light coats but it turned out dang near perfect....and I am pretty OCD about stuff like that.

Edit... pics aren't showing up, I'll get the fished product up tomorrow.

I was going to paint mine but the silver is kind of looking good to me.. was it hard removing the insert?

It isn't hard but it's a little tedious to get started. All you really need is a flat blade screwdriver (after removing the couple philips that you will see on the back of the insert that screws to the surround) and pry the little tabs free.

Best advice I can give is lay it face down on a blanket so you don't scratch it and start prying loose the tabs in a upper corner of the grille. You will have to pry a couple and push/pull at the same time. Once you get the first couple the rest are a breeze as you will kind of know what you are trying to accomplish.

it was difficult for me, after a few broken tabs i just gave up.

I taped mine off with painters tape and newspaper before I plasti-dipped mine.I attempted to remove the inner grill but decided it wasn't worth it.
