Need your opinion on lift/bigger tires

Hi all, planning on a 2.5” lift with Radflo coil overs, Deaver leaf springs and I have Camburg UCA’s as well since anything over 1” lift isn’t recommended with stock UCAs on our trucks. I want to put 305/70 R16 KO2 tires, 33’s 12” width basically. I’m excited but at the same time a little worried I might be missing things I need to do to accommodate these upgrades. Worried I need to re-gear or have larger brakes etc.

I was hoping you all could give me your insights on my plans and what you think I might be overlooking.

P.S. I have basically new Bilstein 5100 and fairly new 265/70 R16 KO2s now. I’m treating myself to something I really want for my truck but at same time, I wonder if I can’t pull off what I want with my 5100’s. 2nd guessing myself constantly and I feel your opinions can help me decide on my path forward.

the only modification I’ve made suspension wise are the 5100’s on the first notch in front which is about a 1” lift to level our the truck.

Rims are TRD Beadlocks and I have 1.25” spacers.

Since you want opinions and thoughts I’ll give you mine even though it might not blow your skirt up. Do not take offense, please.

Keep it stock and go 285/75/R16 which is as big a tire as possible without ruining things. You‘ll save money by not buying a lift and then causing other lift related issues you’ll have to chase afterwards. Our trucks have a great design and work nicely as is.

Post up your truck details so others who comment have a better understanding. We have lots of lift guys and you’ll get all types of info to help you.

 

Thanks, no offense taken. Exactly what I’m looking for, a different view point. So we can fit 285/75/R16 tires without a lift on our trucks?... That’s a 32.8” by 12.4” tire. Thought we needed a lift to make tires that big fit our trucks.

 

Been on them for about 16 years (285/75/r16) with the Starfish Original Wheels. They do rub slightly on a full turn into a parking spot/etc on the inside Chassis.

Other Access Cabs guys around here with lifts and springs with aftermarket wheels have bigger rubbings and end up losing mudflaps and then chase into other unintended consequences.

 

Interesting. Any lift at all? What’s the offset on your Rims? Have the TRd Beadlock that have a 10mm offset and I have 1.25” spacers which I can remove if necessary.

Nonsense. If he has 5100s already then it isn't stock. Depending on what notch your 5100s are on you should be able to hit 2" of lift.

Depending on what tire you want, with 2" of lift you might clear a 285/75/16 (32.8x11.4). There are some tires with milder treads that clear fine, others with more aggressive mud treads will hit here and there.

You may need to trim the bottom inside corners of your bumper, it isn't noticable when done right. You may need to ditch the front mud flaps. You may need to pull back the inner fender liner and give the old pinch weld a few good whacks with a hammer to flatten it inward, then pop the inner fender liner back in place.

Consider the Camburg arms, or safe a buck and get SPC arms, or save two bucks and get the rebranded SPC arms. Not just for articulating but because they offer more clearance for your tires. I don't know which TRD wheels you run or what width or backspace they are. An 8" wide wheel with 4" backspaceis abouts sweet as it gets to run a 285 or 305 tire.

A full Deaver rear leaf pack you should only consider if you don't carry weight in the bed or do any towing. They flex more and ride smoother at the cost of strength. If you want to lift the rear without losing that, consider a 3 pack addition but go with a heavy duty one and keep the overload in place. This is a third of the price of full deavers. To be fair a stock tundra can clear 35s in the rear stock, no lift.

You won't need to regear for a 285/75/16, but you'd be cooler if you did. I run this tire with 4.56 gears and the combo works well. I ran this tire with stock gear for 2 years without a problem.

 

Thanks! When I’m off-road/mainly on trails my bed is usually loaded. Great bit of info on the Deaver springs. Sounds like I’d be worse off with them.

The tires I want are the KO2s and the 285 and 305 both have a width of 12"+... seems like I'd have rubbing and what concerns me even more is how that rubbing can damage my truck offroad. Need to do a good bit of research it seems.

 

They have different options but they all have pros and cons. Check into https://archivegarage.com/ they've been building stuff tailored to first gen. They previously made a Deaver leaf that worked well with weight off road but made the back end pretty tall when it didn't have weight. They have a newer design now that should be better.

Take your time and plan it out. Spend some time in our first gen build pages and ask others what their experiences have been with their set ups.

 

No lift except the Billys up front are set at one notch higher than stock. I don’t know the offset off the top of my head. They are the Factory Starfish Aluminums. I forgot to mention about avoiding spacers as a good idea.

Not so sure its nonsense, but I told you you’d get some good info from the lift guys. @Darkness confirmed all the extra stuff you’ll be chasing when you do a lift so just as long as you are prepared for it you should be good to go. He is actually the one you’ll want to listen to if you go the lift route. I usually don’t post up on these Spacer/lift/tire size threads because they get touchy, but since you asked...

How much is your budget so we know how far you are willing to go?

 

No shit, I’ll confirm! I’m almost 3.5” higher in the rear with absolutely no weight. First time in over a year with no weight and it drove rough but not bad.

I was hoping to stay under $5k for everything. This is a forever truck for me. Thought about the new Tundras or possibly a Taco but the new Tundras are too big for some trails and a taco wouldn't have the towing power a V8 does.

 

Good decision on your truck. You have a decent budget that is realistic for a nice lift. Others will make some fine recommendations.

 

What are your goals with the truck?

I met a local guy who had the 305's and he had to remove the mudflaps and do the pinchweld. Neither of which are hard or expensive. He also had to trim that little plastic bit off the bumper, but again pretty easy. I don't know about regearing though.

I've had multiple tire sizes, 285/75/16, 265/75/16, 285/70/17 and now 265/70/17. The 285's in either size definitely looked the best, but I took a pretty big hit in gas mileage and I could feel the weight of them on acceleration. I'm really liking the 265/70/17's, they are good year duratrac and I love the look of the tread. I can't say I've noticed the decreased ground clearance and I take my truck to moab every couple of months.

 

I'd love to Moad one day...

My goals are 2 part, I want a little more clearance for when I'm on trails and I love the 2"-3" lift with 33"s look on our trucks. I've never had any issues even with my modest 1" lift with the 5100s but recently I followed a Raptor on a trail and ended up somewhere I was concerned could damage my truck... I made it through after some careful planning tho.

Add a leaf in the back for an extra inch so I level out the truck and get some 305's to bring it all together.

 

All I will say about suspension is buy once, cry once. Most likely after a year or less you will want bigger and better.

I went a 7" lift about 6 months ago, and now I want to lower it a few inches. I can t take curves like I want to.

 

Who makes a 7" lift? Only DB kits I've seen is the 4" RCD but not sure they're in business anymore??

 

He doesn't have a first gen.

RCD lift is still available and can be 4 or 6 inch. If you really want to get high you could run the 6" and add a 1" body lift from Daystar.

I'd go full OME, plus rear lift, 3 leaf AAL if yore leafs are in good shape, or custom if not. If you want more, you can't go wrong with full coil overs like king, toytec, etc... OME is a good balance of high end, but not too expensive.
