So I drove my 2018 5.7 CM (18k miles and original OEM battery) to the grocery store today. Started fine at home but absolutely NOTHING (not even a solenoid "click") when I was leaving the store. Long story short, friend came and gave me a jump and I proceeded to drive it for a half an hour to see if it would take a charge. Got home, shut if off and tried to start. Same thing: nothing. So, my question is, will Toyota warranty it after 2 years? I've seen mixed stories of "free replacement" as well as "pro-rated". Can I pull it out of the truck and take it to the dealer in my wife's car and have it warrantied?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I had mine die after 2 years/ 25k miles on my 2017.... jumped it, took the truck right to the dealer and it was a warranty swap.

They should give you a pro-rated credit towards a replacement.

The OEM factory batteries don't seem to last very long these days.

You can top off the OEM batteries with distilled water, this practice will extend the life of the battery.

Just had the same thing happen in my 2018. Warranty covers it.

Toyota should cover it. I took my dads RX350 to the dealer for a service and they detected the battery is starting to go, they replaced it under warranty (6 mos left on the factory warranty).

That's a short life for a battery, my 16 is still going strong but that may be due to cooler temperatures in Minnesota and possibly the few miles of dirt roads I must travel on. I belive the dirt roads keeps lead sulfate low due to the washboards on the dirt roads that are also good at loosening filings in your teeth. I have found in the past that can revive a dead battery (boat, motorcycle, lawnmower, ect)simply by placing on a cement floor and give it a little vibration being cautious not to damage or crack it then checking the water level (if possible) and recharging. Also making alot of short drives will kill a battery fast. Good luck

I had something similar after 2 years or so on my 17. Got a jump, got it home and put it on a deep cycle trickle charge for 24 hours. Been perfect ever since.

Spoke to the local dealership and they said if the battery is really toast, they will do a free replacement. Now the question is, will my 0/1 gauge amp wire running directly to the battery, void the warranty? What do you guys think?

Shouldn’t. If they say it does, go to a different dealer. It’s free easy money for the dealer if your still under 3/36

If you're worried, just disconnect it and tuck it under the fuse box. They will obviously see it so if there is a grey area, you wouldn't want them to be "blaming" the aftermarket wiring or draw on the electrical system. Amps that exceed the output of the alternator will then draw on the battery as a capacitor, too much of this will definitely lessen the battery's life. If you're on good terms with your dealership, I would not worry about it.

The dealer will test the old battery and it will fail. They get a print out of the results and submit it for warranty with the battery. Easy money for the dealer and they wont give a butt hole if you have an amp connected. Lots of times we had a "special" battery that was guaranteed to fail just to replace batteries to make the customer happy.

If you have something connected to the battery that can elicit questions, I agree that it might be a good idea to disconnect it before taking it to the dealer.
It sounds like a cell failed suddenly, which is likely a material defect or the result of running the battery way down or dry or into a short circuit with no fuse or breaker in the line.

One bad cell isn't going to make the truck absolutely dead. Batteries that fail in the summer with the heat die instantly. Winter battery fails are a slow crank. The dealer isn't going to care what's connected to the battery as long as there isn't a parasitic draw. They run a GR8 test and if it fails new battery goes in. Techs dont have the time or bother to question customers about a dead battery and the dealer just wants the money.
