Does anyone think there will ever be a recall on this? I feel like this near the top of the ridiculous tundra issues. My truck has been undercoated twice a year since it was brand new, I have the service records .. and yet 9 months after I bought it, the bed has nearly flaked through from the bottom and is spreading.

Toyota .. you need to address this problem. Toyota owners are proud to drive your trucks and many of us make repeat purchases (this is my second Toyota truck) .. hate to say it but its no wonder people sell their trucks and switch to Dodge

We had some bed rust starting, 2013 Tundra. I took the bed off, 1st time with any truck, not to difficult. I undercoated the frame pretty well, then both sides of the bed. Not sure home much it will matter long term, at least slow corrosion down some.

I wouldn't be using that undercoater again. Either they stand behind their work or not. Good luck finding a Dodge that doesn't rust. For that matter one that will go 200k miles. What year is your truck?

Took the bed liner off my new to me 2010 Tundra. Four spots with rust all the way through. I have a friend who’s a professional welder, he’s going to patch it up for me, then I’ll be taking it to LineX.

I'm disappointed with mine. I doubt I'll buy another Toyota after this one but there is no way it'll ever be a Dodge. The GM's I had were pretty decent but I shied away from the same year range as my Tundra because of the fuel pump issues. GM's don't have the rust issues Toyotas do here the Northwest.
I inherited an '02 Excursion with a 7.3L diesel last year. I thought of selling it after I got the Tundra. It's a Ford and I don't really like them but it's grown on me. It doesn't have any rust whatsoever and it's never been garaged. It's been a really nice driving vehicle even though it's a bit slow off the line. It's dimensions are nearly identical to my Tundra. They both get about the same fuel economy. The Tundra looks cheap compared to the Excursion. The materials and build quality are better. I feel like cutting my losses and just sell the Tundra. I'm not good at repairing rust and I don't have anyone who can help me. I feel Toyota's reluctance to resolve these and other issues is downright criminal.

Huh....virtually every GM/Chevy in MN will end up with rusted out wheel wells. So much so my 14 yr old the other day asked if that's why a lot of Chevy/GM owners put fender flares on, to help hide the rust. I almost spit my Guinness out when he made that comment.

Everything in MN rusts worse than here in WA & OR My truck is a PNW truck and the bed is rusted. My yard truck is an 94 F150 that's from MN and it has no bed floor rust. It's always had a liner and has never been parked indoors. Yes it has some small areas of rust in the fenders but there aren't any holes. It has less rust overall than my Tundra has just n the bed. It was a much better truck for the money I spent over 10 years ago which was little more than 10% of what I paid for the Tundra. It's got 220K miles and still runs and drives good.

The job cost me $1500 but I did a lot of the grunt work wire wheeling the rust off the frame. I also bought the bed liner spray and Por 15. So I was probably into the job for $2000. Just make sure to inspect the other bed to make sure it does not have the same rust in the bed rails.

Thanks for the info. I know now what to look for in the other bed. I need to justify the outlay of $2500 or just leave it like it is. I've had second thoughts about the Tundra since finding the rust. I have another truck I inherited last year that I was going to sell to offset the cost of the Tundra. I may keep it instead.

Other than this rust issue, which was a real surprise to discover because the rest of the truck looked almost new despite it being a 2008, i really love the truck. I tow an enclosed trailer and the 5.7 is an awesome engine to tow with. Also, I think mechanically the Toyota's will last much longer than any of the US trucks. Read the threads on this forum of how many guys have 200+ K to almost 500 K miles on their Tundra and they are still running great. You will never get that kind of mileage out of a US brand pick up gas engine. Also most high milage US pick up's will have a lot of rust unless they were driven in the dry states. Something to consider.

The Excursion I have has the 7.3L Powerstroke diesel and only has 105K miles. I brought it up from southern CA and it has absolutely no rust. I have a good feeling it will outlast my Tundra. If I ever need to tow something, this beast will do it. It also gets about the same fuel economy as my 4.7 Tundra. I'm averaging 15.7 mpgs with the EX and 16.3 with the Tundra.

I'm sure the undercoating helped everything else under there. The issue is not where we can really see and where your undercoating was probably doing a great job of protecting but rather a poor job from the factory sealing around the bed mounts where moisture can get in and sit causing the rust.

I think until these beds fall off while going down the road and cause an injury there won't be any recall.

I'm just sour about my purchase and didn't expect an issue like this. Other than the rust the truck has been OK. The bedliner keeps ot out of sight out of mind for the most part. I also keep a tonneau cover on the bed to keep the bed dry from above. I know I'll have to deal with rust if I going to keep it which seems to be the case for now as long as nothing else goes wrong.

I have LineX and can see the areas bubbling up. The LineX is probably the only thing keeping what little sheet metal left in tact. But like you I put in a plastic bed liner to keep it out of sight.

Mine came with the liner from the dealer when it was new. It's had 13 years to trap moisture and other crap. What was odd, there was even gravel trapped under the liner when I pulled it out. I've never seen anything other than dust under the liners of all my other trucks. I can't imagine how the gravel got there other than it was removed at one point and a PO was too lazy to clean it and just put the liner back.

Hey sourdough44, Thanks for sharing. Did you really take the bed off without a lot of trouble? Is it as simple as the bolts in the bed?

    Thanks!

There are videos on taking the bed off. The 1st issue is to make sure you can get the bed bolts loosened. I did that 1st, then just left them snug. There are some electrical wires to unplug, then some work around the gas cap. I slid the bed onto a trailer I positioned behind, two of us.

I coated the bed bolts in oil for reassembly, left them so I could remove again if needed. I don’t think the bed with fly off.

2014 tundra with 45,000 miles on it. Had spray in Rhino liner installed when I purchased used in 2017 with 21,000 miles. I have had fluid film sprayed under entire truck every fall. Pennsylvania truck. No rust anywhere on frame and not visible from underneath.

This bed issue is still happening. Toyota dealership knows there are issues and no help. Corporate knows and doesn’t care.

spent 11 hours cutting off the bedliner.

Going to have a welder cut out what he can without removing the bed, but if too bad will remove bed and replacecrossbraces.

Complaint went to the “tier 3” representative and after hearing her say Toyota stands behind their product three times I laughed and said ok I will drop it off for a bed replacement on their dime.

Toyota’s response was vehicles rust. I said I understand that but this truck Gen 3 has the same exact issue that the 2007-2012 models had the TSB for.

Anyway a complete waste of time with them. This will be my 1st and last Toyota vehicle. Truck is a POS, had the cam tower leak, front timing chain cover leak and rear main engine seal leak all under 32,000 miles. I had to fight with toyota for every warranty claim.

    Done with Toyota.
