My subwoofer build for my 17 CrewMax

Hey guys. It seems no matter how old I get, I never lose my love for car audio. Given the fact I drive my truck a lot for my work, I decided to build a custom dual subwoofer enclosure to enjoy. I will do my best to take more pictures and post as my project proceeds.

I will be using a pair of 8” Focal P20F subs and a JL Audio RD500/1 amp.

Nothing super fancy. I am looking to achieve sound quality not spl. The amp will be mounted on the center panel of the enclosure.

Here is what I have so far using 3/4” mdf and a 3/4” plywood plate for the amp. Glued, screwed, and mostly sanded.

I have not test fit the enclosure yet, but I measured many times and I’m really hoping I chose wisely. The total width is 50”, height is 9” and the depth is 5.75”. Each sub enclosure is 20” wide.

My target internal sealed air volume was 0.35 cubic feet per Focal specs. This configuration will get me 0.34 cubic feet...close enough.

 

I'm almost 38 now and I'm right there with ya car audio is one thing I'm missing right now. Your project is looking good. Cant wait to see the finnished product !

I like custom enclosures. But I have to say, any custom builds I did, I ALWAYS test fit the pieces before I screwed and glued, to ensure I was getting as much volume as possible from the enclosure, then work back to the volume of the specific driver. To get accurate volume, fill the box with sand and then dump into a measurable container. Sandbox sand is clean and easy. I'm looking forward to seeing how it works out for you.
I'm 48 and put about 250hours into my audio build and tuning over the last 2 years. You're never too old for pure music enjoyment! Good luck and I hope it fits!

Does it fit??? There is one really big seat bracket sticking into the space where your box is going. My heart was racing when I was putting my box in. Tight back there!

 

I have not had time to pull the seats out yet to test fit. Will do it this weekend for sure. I wasn’t that nervous until you posted...damnit.

There is a notch on that right side but the driver for a huge bracket that I assume was from some Toyota engineer that hates sub-boxes.

EDIT: ok, so I cant post the link but if you google 2017 tundra crew max sub box, you will see pictures of the notch.

Well...the fit of this box is a miserable failure.
It’s too wide and too deep. I’m really disappointed but it’s back to the drawing board. Will update after the next attempt.

I totally understand you re dilemma. I had high hopes for a 10" Cresendo Contralto I bought a long time ago. My DC had no place for it though. Although it takes a small sealed box I ultimately pulled out the 66% section of the back seat to accommodate it, and all the rest of the stuff I have. I don t have a family, and never use the back seats anyway, and now I have loads of room to go crazy
In the end it s all about the sound.

 

I was doing the same thing and those stupid seat brackets ate my lunch. Let me tell you, I measure MANY times and still got it wrong. I gave up and bought a box from James.

 

I just did my best to measure my box. Can't go taking out car seats and truck seats.

The base is 7". The top is 3". And the back is 13". You can ask Pythagoras Trigonometry how long the slanted front side is. Think right triangle with the top cut off.

The driver side edge of my box is about 1/8" in from the widest part of the seat mount.

I recall that the notch for the middle bracket of the seat made it have to sit there. Measure where that middle bracket is, and make it quite a bit wider, so you can move it around a bit more about than I can. I think I made my notch 1" deep. And I think it was 0.5" from the bottom and 6" tall. I'd go 4" wide.

Just so you know, at these dimensions my box is held tightly by the seat. I have clearance for my sub because it is in the middle of the driver side back seat. Along other places, you would not have clearance.

I have a shallow mount mtx 12" sub.

 

2008 CM. Single CVT 8, amp mounted under the seat. Using stock HU with Kicker LOC. Since this picture, I moved the FE behind the DS rear seat and pushed the box toward the PS.

I watched this guys video on you tube and I believe he says these boxes are 4.6" deep. They appear to be about 15" wide and about 10" high (he's using 10"s)

I'm hoping if I stick to these numbers they will fit using 8" subs...which would make my boxes about 9" tall instead of his 10".

I realize the wedge shape box will fit better but I am trying to do this project on my own and I don't have the skills to make precise angle cuts.

Thoughts?

 

If you have a skills you can cut the angles just fine,clamp a straight edge and your good to go

 

I tried to do a box that wouldn't have angles to keep it simpler too. I just run out of space back there so quickly, I couldn't get it to work. Not with my 12" sub anyways. Maybe with 10s that are not too deep it will work, certainly looks good in that picture as long as seats go back in.

 

While you have the seats out, may as well lay down some dynamat. Nice area to learn on.

 

making those cuts isnt as hard as it might seem, but you will need to do some trigonometry (I googled cause I haven’t done trig since junior year of hs) for the angle of the cuts. Once I had the angles I could figure the cu ft. To make the cuts I clamped a straight edge on the mdf and used my circular saw.

where I went wrong was not factoring the width of the board (3/4) so I was 1.5 inches to big. It is better to be as shallow as possible for your sub depth and wider than deep and narrow.

As a PS-

I bought a box from James and he took the specs of my sub (Infinity Reference 10”) and amp and we went with a enclosed box with the sub on the 2 ohm setting so I get some bump and protect my amp. Box come today and I am pretty excited.

 

Will the box you made work under the rear seat if you have a CrewMax?
Just a thought that may make your like easy if you can remove some of the carpet and foam and place it there

Did they cut something out of the back seat? Maybe they avoided the seat supports. There hardly 4” of room from what I’ve seen.

 

There was no mention of cutting from the area where the subs sit. I’m pretty sure he said the boxes are 4.6” deep.

 

Here is a picture of the passenger side rear seat in place with the box installed. The box is 5.75” deep and 9” tall.

With 2.75” shallow mount 8” subs and a 4” deep box it should work.

 

Looks close maybe cut out the factory padding on the back wall?
