This is my first oil change on this Tundra. I've always changed the oil on all of my vehicles and this is the worst experience I've had. Here is the story and hopefully a fix.

The change started out great, I drain the oil and no issues. I go and take the filter housing off and it was stuck on tight, so I had to get my breaker bar to help. Well I'm not sure of the history, but when I finally get it out, I notice that some of the tabs on the plastic filter housing are cracking. Didn't really think anything of it because it still looked okay (I thought I'll order another housing for the next change) so I go about finishing her up and start the Tundra up. At that point I hear a fluid leaking sound, turn the Tundra off and notice that about 2 quarts of oil are spilling out the filter housing. When things calm down, I removed the housing and noticed a small crack in the housing where the tab was cracked and can see daylight through the crack.

After some self calming I go and pick up a Dorman aluminum housing from Advance Auto and finish the oil change. At his point I'm about $95 bucks in on the change (oil+filter+new housing).

Well a couple of days later I notice some oil dripping from the filter housing area. So I tried to tighten it but it shouldn't take to much torque to get it to spec and it was decently hand tight at this point.

After this, I decided to remove the filter housing and replace the housing rubber O-ring just in case the one that came with the Dorman housing was messed up. After a test drive, the same thing is happening, a small bit of oil is weeping from the top of the housing. It's not a lot but is still an issue.

Today, i just ordered a new OEM Aluminum housing and filter from Toyota and hope that will fix this issues.

Does anyone have any other recommendations? Not sure what else I can do.

Here is a pic of where the oil is leaking/weeping from:

Wow, that sucks. Only thing I can think is that the o ring got pushed past the little groove it’s supposed to sit in. O ring doesn’t go all the way down on filter housing.

I agree with you, had a similar experience my first attempt. Snapped my filter tool in half trying to get the housing off, was forced to leave the old filter in till next time . Did buy a aluminum housing..never had issues in my life on any other of the 8 vehicles I've owned..IMG_20200216_125348.jpg

I love my Tundra, but yeah, it's the stupidest oil filter system I've ever had to deal with.

That was the first thing I checked when I pulled the filter housing out. The o-ring was where it was supposed to be. The only thing I can think of at this point is it was a manufactured defect.

This was the Dorman filter housing I got for AA

My wife’s camry has same style filter so I was ready for it. Now both have fumoto valve and I use tho motiv (I think that’s what it is) filter drain and tool. Oil changes are clean n easy. First time I used the thread in filter drain piece was very messy until I figured it out.

When you get the toyota aluminum housing don’t forget to put the longer perforated tube from the stock housing into it.

It's still leaking with the Dorman filter housing. This is after swapping out the filter housing oring. I've ordered an OEM filter housing and new filter from my Toyota dealer. It should come in tomorrow and I'll try the new one out and report back.

My Lexus came with an aluminum housing and never had an issue with it. I'm hoping the new OEM housing and filter will fix this issue for me.

My guess is a defect with the one from the auto parts store and the one from the dealer will fix the leak.

I have no idea how tight a human is capable of hand tightening something, but for reference the torque value for the housing is 18.5 ft*lbf. In case you want to double check it properly.

Might be the receiver for the filter got messed up from over torquing.

A lot of people seem to hate Toyota filters but that's usually because they are way over torqued.

If you do it right, you will have not even a drip of oil spilled, not even on your tools. I don't even bother to put on gloves.

I'm really hoping the OEM filter housing and filter fixes this issue. If it doesn't I'm not sure what else to check.

Agreed. There's a small learning curve but after that, it's pretty painless. I get more oil on my hands pulling the drain plug than anything else. I do miss they oil filter system on my second gen Tacoma though...

You should be good after you get the new one. I bought my OEM aluminum housing on Amazon a few months ago and just put it in last week....no problems so far. FYI, when you look for parts like that, find the prices at the online dealerships and usually the local dealers while price match it. You can always get them from @Roman as well. He is one of the go to guys that we all lean on!

You can do this by cocking the tube at a angle and with just a little pressure it will snap out. It was a piece of cake for me.

The filter only seals via the o-ring in place.

Typically these require little torque (looks like 18ft/lb) to seal, the only sources I can think of for a leak now are:

The o-ring has lost its size (thinned or flattened) from time or over torquing.

The sealing surface of the o-ring, filter cap, or filter housing is scratched. That would allow oil to bypass the o-ring under pressure.

Unfortunately now the only way to verify would be to remove them all again and check.

I'm going to check the Dorman filter for any visible defects once I get the new OEM filter housing. I've spent a few days messing with this and lost a few t-shirts to oil so at this point I'm just gonna replace it all with OEM stuff and hope it works.

I'm at $95 for this filter change, plus another $40 for the OEM stuff.

Here is the old plastic filter. As you can see, there is a nice hole where the tab broke off. Didn't see it until oil pressure pushed it off.

If the OEM filter housing cap doesn’t work, I’m willing to bet the housing is damaged from over torquing (since you had to get the breaker bar out). Hopefully this is not the case.

If it's still leaking after the new housing I'd take it to Toyota and let them figure it out. Your truck listed is a 2018 so should be under warranty.

    Hello!

Just got a 2017 5.7, illl be doing my own oil changes and I looked into the fumoto valve after reading your comments and noticed there's like 6 differenr valve options. Just wondering which one you went with. Thanks!

Last of my free oil changes the apes at the dealership torqued the cover to probably 130 ft lbs. I had a 30" breaker bar on it and my neighbor had to hold my legs. They also lost one bolt on skid plate and left another one out. I say lost because one bolt did not match others. I called service manager and he got me 2 bolts and offered a new filter cover because I destroyed the original. Fortunately I had a metal one ready to go. Service manager told me all the techs have torque wrenches. I said you better teach them how to use them.
