What octane gas do you use for your Tundra?

Costco in Vegas....Was it a zoo? How long for gas? See any N.G.?

I run 87 or 91 in my 12' 5.7 FFV.

 

Gas is no crazier than normal. Grocery shopping is another story.

 

Yea keep it simple most of tundra owners will put 87 octane which is ok. But i dont want the wrong information going out to everyone. For example Lexus 5.7 engine has the same engine put requires 93 because to boost up power. This is from dap directly


As we have reported with every truck we have tested on, 4.6L, 4.7L, 5.7L, all run best on 91+ octane weather they are completely stock with stock tune, or tuned. These engines pull 8-12 degrees of timing due to knock retard on 87 oct, 6-10 deg on 89oct, 2-6 deg on 91oct, and 0-2deg on 93oct. That is on a completely stock truck with factory tune.

And this is a guy that works and sweats everyday on tundra 5.7/4.6 and theres proof that the 5.7/4.6 runs better using 93 octane. Dyno proven!!!!!

 

Any advantage going nonethanol? I was doing it both on my '18 and the wife's Venza. We've switched back out of convenience but I do run mid grade or better. Since I got the '20 limited i've only run mid grade or higher.

 

It depends, non ethannol is staright gasoline which has a higher btu "higher energy level" than normal gas. Iv heard better mpg from non ethanol but higher octane will give you more power than anything its up to you though.. For me i run 93 octane always and my truck runs smoother less noisy, no pinging and more power...

Running 93 and claiming you get more power is in your mind. I’d like to see dyno runs burning 87 and 93 before anyone claims more power...

Ask dap tune he will show you. And recent studies show that 93 octane has 10x more cleaning chemicals than 87 only in specify gas station. That article was back in 2014 and it was broad not specific to the 5.7 that dap has.

 

10x more cleaning agents at a specific retailer? Which retailer? Where’s the data that indicates that?

I don’t mean to question the validity of what you said but there is a lot of BS going around and without hard data, it’s just unverified claims. 10x the cleaning agent would cost the manufacturer more money to produce each gallon of fuel. If they are doing that, why aren’t they advertising it? It doesn’t make any sense to do what other producers don’t do and not advertise and charge extra for it.

Could it be Chevron and their Techron?

 

Do your own research. Many case studies proven 93 has more cleaning additives than regular 87. Yes chevron, Sunoco, Mobil, Techtron. Im not getting into argument weather its better or not. Im just putting out the right info. If you believe 87 is better than ok its your opinion but dont put stuff out thats not true like 93 is horriable for the 5.7 and the engine is going to have incomplete burn which is 100% false. Like i said to others try it out if you dont like it go back to 87. Right now gas is cheap so why not. I will bow out for right now ✌

 

I use 91 or 93 octane regular. I have found out that when I put high octane regular my gas mileage is better over the ethanol or lower grade regular octane

Ok i just had to laugh. Lol this video contradicts what you saying about 93 fuel-burning slower. LAMO

 

It burns the same speed but with higher octane engine timing is adjusted and can start burning sooner which typically creates a little more efficiency and power. That’s how I understand it anyways.

Bottom line for me is to stay consistent with whatever you choose so your truck can adjust the ecu and run it’s best for the fuel you decide.

 

Please respond to post 263 and 265. You appear to be justifying running higher octane fuel as the Tundra 5.7L has a compression ratio above 9.5:1 (it has 10.2:1) thanks

 

I’ve run both 87 and 92 in the 5.7 V8. Owners manual say 87, but I’ve always run 92. 87 seems to be fine no knock but 92 seems to give slight more power. I switch depending on price and time of year.usually get about 350-400 per tank depending on where I am and doing, doesn’t matter the octane !! My 2 cents.

I use 89 because the GMC Sierra I had before this ran like crap if I used 87. I’ll put 87 in 4 cylinder vehicles but for a V8 no lower than 89.

 

So my Tundra manual says:

"87 (Research octane number 91) or higher"

My engine has an after market tune, which does affect how it runs. The tune recommends 93 octane for best performance. IMHO the Tundra manual is not real clear because of the "Research octane number 91" in parentheses. The manual also says "or higher" and to me that means that running higher octane may indeed help the engine run better. In other words, 87 octane is the minimum Toyota recommends.

Anyhow, 87 is fine but if you decide to run a higher octane and you think it does indeed help your truck run better (and we all know that when you constantly drive a vehicle, you get pretty in tune, pun intended, with how it runs and when there are problems, issues, or performance enhancements) then that's not necessarily money wasted.

Doesn't matter what I run, truck runs good and mileage sucksno matter what....so the cheapest 87 or equal priced mid grade I find when I need fuel.

um....E85 pump gas since day one.

 

How many days has Day 1 been? I ran premium in my Taco since day 1 and then drove it 14 years and 213,000 miles.

 

87. I’ve run a several tanks of premium and there was no perceivable difference in driving or MPG. I’ve run premium in a lot of vehicles (Acura MDX, Lexus GX, Denali XL) but do not see any benefit in doing so with the Tundra.
