2001 Rear End Swap

Hey everyone im new to this page and looking for some help. I have a 2001 Tundra SR5 Access Cab V8 4X4. I pretty sure I have 3.91 gears in the rear. Would I be able to run any other type of gears without damaging the truck? Also what year could I go up to and swap the whole axle assembly? Was under the impression I could go all the way up to 06.

 

A few on here have swapped in gears. Just gotta match the front and rear. You can go up to an 06 for a swap.

I had my rear go out of my truck last week. was wondering if any other gears besides 3.91 would damage my transfer case. I just called a a shop and he said that i could only go up to and 04 axle assembly. Apparently an 05 and 06 axle assembly wont bolt up in my 01? according to him

 

The only way it's going to damage the t/c is if you don't match your front and rear gear ratios. If you have 3.91s then you absolutely must keep 3.91s in the rear axle. Mismatched gearing will definitely destroy your transfer case.

 

Afaik all axles are the same.

 

You can use any first gen tundra axle housing, however, there are 3 different style companion flanges on the 3rd members. 00-04 uses a 60x60 flange and the 05-06 uses a 66x66 flange. Don’t quote me on this, but I believe there is also an oddball flange they used on sequoias and some tundras where the studs are pressed into the flange and the nuts go on from the front side. Also, you must use 3.91 unless you’re gonna change front and back gears.

 

Change them all to 4.56 and you'll be happier

 

Something I almost forgot, some of the older tundras didn’t come with abs. Just something to consider if you’re searching for the whole assembly.

 

Also, be advised Double Cab axles are a different width than Standard Cab/Access Cab.

Thank you everyone for your input. Still on the search for a rear. So for what I gathered and interpreted form everything, I need to match my t/c and get 3.91 gears if that what was in my truck which Im pretty sure it was and only a 00-04 rear will will bolt up correctly? I have ABS so I also have to get a rear with that as well? I think I got it haha thank you all again for the information this is a very helpful page to be a part of.

 

To be clear, you don't need to match the gearing in your transfer case, you need to match the gearing in your front differential. If your front and rear axles have different gear ratios, they'll be spinning at different speeds when in 4WD.
And you cannot use an axle from a double cab.

 

I was able to track down a rear end close by but would a rear from a 2003 tundra with ABS be able go into a 2001 tundra that doesn't have ABS has the same gears and everything? I don't see why it wouldn't.

 

Hi I'm new here as well and this thread is as close to my question as I can find. Not trying to hijack this one by any means, mods.ease feel free to move this if needed.

I have a 2006 SR5 and want to swap my whole rear end for a TRD set up to get rid of the drums and have rear disks, can i just straight up swap in a used 06 TRD rear from my local pick and pull with no real issue?

 

An 06 trd have drums too. Unless you're talking about a sequoia, which would involve a lot of fab work.

 

What are the other numbers that are stamped on the ring? Do they have a significant meaning when swapping them?

 

Build date followed by ratio?
