I have never filled up more than 30 gallons, but I dont usually run it all the way to the end. Although I think its silly its advertised as 38 and only really around 30-32, realistically for me that is big enough

Before my 1st lube oil/filter change, i.e., 5K, my truck range was 500. Afterwards, after every re-fuel to full tank, range is 490...wonder why? May be because of not so good driving habits?

Does the computer take into account winter fuel vs summer fuel? I know mine dropped from 560 to 540 miles pretty suddenly too. That's all I can think of

@Jpneely: No idea about computer assumptions. Temps here during days is around low 40s to upper 60s. Yesterday, I travelled almost 400mi and about 80% highway; fuel eco is 15.88mpg (manual compute).

That's about the same temps here too. I know my milage had always dropped in the winter a bit ( even though we rarely ever see a "winter") due to fuel mix changes. I just assumed this fancy smart truck was taking that into account haha

For those of you complaining about not being able to use 38 gallons, there’s a simple explanation. Close the drain and put 1 gallon of water in your bathtub. You can tell it spreads out a lot. Now imagine that pickup tube somewhere in the middle and you will see it will take a few more gallons before anything can be sucked up a tube without a lot of air especially considering sloshing around.

    * Didn't read all 7 pages

Was aware of the large "reserve" on these big tanks when I bought my '17 - from having read it on this forum when researching the purchase.

Ran mine dry a month or 2 ago (accidentally, I miscalculated my miles on the tank after forgetting to trip my ODO after the last fill-up) - thought I had PLENTY in the tank to make it to the next town where gas is +/- 20 cents less per gallon. Had been driving a couple days with the light on just out of curiousity.

Was able to coast into the pump and put in over 37 gallons (Dang near 38). I'm a bit more cognizant of my tank level now, but I do know that I've got a solid 100 miles left in the tank when the light goes on....

    Not enough....
I love this "feature". My old 01 had a 26 gallon tank, maybe put 20-21 gallons in at the most when the light came on. It's something I never minded, and I continue to appreciate it with my new 38 gallon tank. :notsure:

new to forum, tundra's since 2012. then a 2015, my newest 2019: OMG, I can read the instruments in daylight! parking assist, LDA, rcta! died and gone to heaven. (most important mod: driver side grip handle added) but. 38 gal tank and what appears to be the old 26 gallon fuel gauge. come on toyota, can't we all just do digital gas gauges for accurate measurement? but, the actual gas mileage is falling off the cliff. downgraded from 8 ft to 6.5 ft DC 4wd this time. not flex-fuel. First few tanks 17+ mpg! heaven in a truck. then put a cap on, more aero dynamic my aunt nannies fanny: 16 mpg. now winter, 9k on odo, my first leg 497 miles the instant fuel said 14.7 mpg. what has happened: Winter blend fuel?

anyhow, will do low fuel light running at least until the end of the 3/36, unless toyota issues a technical service bulletin saying "don't do that!" Hate thought of carrying 48lbs of unusable fuel. Cold outside, hope it helps cool the pump. it was frost overnight on the Tundra in Hardeeville. and I need the range. i got $2.249 gallon gas in hollywood, fl. From there until Hardeeville SC, gas crooks on every i95 off-ramp. Yesterday I was running fumes till hardeeville. 48 miles into the low fuel warning. but i had over a dollar off/gal coupon at shell and had a shell station for $2.179 outside Florence. So I put 12 gals in ( est range 160 miles) in hardeeville $2.199/gal. low fuel came on again outside Florence. SC. 55 miles on low fuel light. Complete fill up at shell outside Florence. 35.11 gal. so, 11 mpg for 5 gals into the 8 gal reserve? total 88 miles range on the reserve 8 gals? that's a disappointment. 14.1 mpg (actual gals to miles) from Hollywood FL-Florence SC. cruise set at: "maintaining traffic flow officer" appx speed: limit plus 10-12%.

I used to run two 20 gal saddle tanks on Silverados, one tank sputters, hit the switch to the other tank and hope the switch isn't broken. Why they stop that? oh, i remember, exploding saddle tanks on t-bone collisions. Got a thousand dollar coupon for a new chevy as a Class Action Settlement. But look who's driving what now!

Got a 38 gallon tank filled up the tank full got about 409miles on the meter/gauge drive it to 0 miles remaining filled it up again full tapping it 3x and only showed 33 34 gallons filled
Does that mean I have 4 or 5 gallons to go before it's really empty?
Funny when I first drove the truck out of the dealer my meter/gauge show like 500+ miles remaining don't ever see that number again

Why would you think the last 8 or so gallons is “unusable”? Just because the light is on doesn’t mean you don’t get to use the gas.
I don’t worry about the fuel pump, if we’re empty it will stop running.

Just ignore the troll. Go look at the Tesla Cybertruck thread. He states he originally came to the forum to get a TRD Pro but has decided that the Tundra isn't worth it and all of us are idiots for not putting money down on a Tesla.

I did this a couple months ago on accident. Filled my tank with just under 37 gallons at the pump. Unfortunately I'm in Southern California so it was over $3 a gallon and well above $100 to fill up.

It's an unregistered reserve that accounts for towing. If you're towing and only getting 7 to 8 MPG, 8 gallons isn't going to get you very far.

that makes sense, I just ASSumed, that since you can view REALTIME MPG.... that the distance to empty would adjust........

I have gone aobut 25 miles after getting the 0 miles left and only put ~33 gals, sometimes I'm able to squeeze 35 but that's about it.
When I got it new the computer said 470 left and now 2 years later when I fill up it never says more than 440 left. I reset my trip meter and I can consistently can get 500 miles to a tank (not counting going past 0 left).

I reviewed my fillup records for the past 2 years, and I have put 33.7 to 33.9 gallons in at the pump on 5 occasions. Usually I'm around 31-32 gallons. I tend to get as close to empty as I can to take advantage of my fuel discount at Frys. I'm cool with having an extra 4 gallons in there when I fill up, since that's really only about 45 miles before fumes.

I just bought 2019 1794 crewmax which I love but otw home from the dealer my gas light came on and with about 30 miles to go it said refuel so I thinking I wasn't going to make it. Got home fine, through 4 gallons in from a jug and drove to the gas station where I filled up with 26 gallons. Confused I hopped online and quickly found a thread similar to this one. Now that I know its not an issue, but my gas gauge is stuck all the way past full so I need to schedule an appointment at the dealer.

If you could get your hands on a 38 gallon tank, I wonder how hard it would be to swap it in.

    2022 Tundra 1794
O.K., it looks pretty normal. I had about 10 Toyota/Lexus cars and SUVs and each of them had about 5 gallons left when the computer displayed 0 remaining miles. This is not a bug, it's a feature :) It was the same for my 2008 Sequoia and it's the same for my 2016 LX 570. I did not test it on my Tundra yet but I believe that there will be no difference.
