Knocked the dust err rust off that....

Decided I was done looking at the surface rust on my rear bumper...thought I'd dive in. Well, most of you know how this goes. Always something else you should to while you do what you intended. I've been poking around underneath and thinking after this I'm just going to spray fluid film or wool wax in every nook and cranny. The receiver area is gonna be a PITA to wire wheel so spraying those two are my best thoughts to remedy.

Wire wheel will just polish that crusty stuff. Hit it with a needle scaler from Harbor Freight. Then convert the rust with phosphoric acid and paint whatever topcoat you prefer. I went with black bed coating on my new bumper. Looks good!

 

This is on my list of things to do as well....

 

Here's the after. Left off the factory hitch parts for now until I get it cleaned up and painted. New hardware ordered also but had to have bumper on to get around.

The little red dealyo?! Awesome, for taking dog hair out of seats when detailing. We all need one. Works great on my Okoles. I never knew such a little thing existed good thing I'm single I just fell in love with it.

Here are the part numbers if anyone needs them also...Yes I know it says lower control arm bolt. I checked, finding the same thing when I ordered. Guy said it's the same bolt with 2 different names and locations.

Makes the truck so much cleaner looking. Looks like the finish turned out smoothly. What spray product did we use?

 

Thanks! And I think so too. It's all rattle can shit.
I didn't clear. Didn't have clear on I before and lasted this long. If it fails miserably I'll either bite the bullet and buy a tube bumper or pay a body shop guy I know to do it. I figure it's a bumper, rattle can isn't that big of deal. No way I'd paint anything on the actual truck body panels that way.
Just a note, that filler primer I wouldn't use again. Went to clean it before paint and it started to smear like the w/g remover softened it. Either it wasn't cured ( I gave it time instructions said), it doesn't like the other brand etching or it's junk...

I'm going to let the inside of the bumper show some rust and then ospho it. I know, I know but needed it back on.

 

Lilly brush is great. Snatches up dog hair from the carpet like nothing.

 

That primer filler powders up too much. It does well if you sand it with 1500 and then wipe it terry cloth, but it almost completely disappears. I think, unless its rusted where you need to Ospho or Rust prime, we are better off just using the same Lacquer finish as a combo prime and then finish coat (on sound finishes).

 

You don't like my finish? LOL. because no clear I assume? I do value your advice/input as well as some others. I could have finished better but need my truck. Really I need another car so I can spend ALL of the time I need to when I do these things

My point in post #10 is discussing alternatives to the powdered primer.

 

So I have the rear bumper off and cleaning it up again with some Ospho befor repainting.
What exactly am I looking at here?
Areas where it didn't actually turn the rust black but did what it's supposed to?
Has more of a film on it after reactivated and then washed with dawn and water rinse. Whole thing was pretty much white til I wore wheel some parts of concern. Weird thing is those parts are not really wheeling off to show rust color near as easy as the parts that look bare.
This is after 3 coats. There was no loose rust on there prior to putting the ospho on.
