Air bag suspension questions!

If you air up a WDH that was previously set up without bags, the torsion bars are not applying as much rotational force, and the weight goes somewhere....right back into your rear axles.

If you air up then set up your WDH you are much better off, but you're still applying rotational force to a compressible, rubber bag of air. While that is better than the previous setup mentioned it won't perform like it was ever intended to, especially under hard braking conditions.

I personally think that a properly set up WDH should be all you need. In the OPs case he's not not using one, so bag away. His setup is the ideal scenario for the use of bags.

I deleted my post because, It started to become argumentative, and with all the bullshit going on I’m not trying to make this like every other social media site with bickering back-and-forth who’s right who’s wrong. You’re not talking to yourself I just felt like you are speaking of a weight distribution hitch And I was speaking of a static load on a static hitch. both of which are completely different.

 

I'd think any would be "compatible" as long as you set it up at inflated height. I wouldn't think brand would matter. I'll never be a fan of both. I used to do it on my old Tundra, then stopped.
Someone needs to actually get some scales and do a test similar to the one I saw on bags vs WDH, but this time use both at the same time.

I only mention it because in the CURT HITCH video I posted they address this at around 1:06 saying check manual for compatability instructions. So I figured they design some to work better with airbags or have a certain set up procedure. I would expect him to say "Do not run airbags and a WDH" if it was as dangerous as losing your front wheel traction. Im not saying your wrong, its def something to think about but this isnt new technology and I think as long as he sets it up correctly as described in the video he will be in safe operating limits. Im really glad it was brought up because I learned something. Thank You!

 

I totally get what you’re saying. And I think you’re right - my setup really just requires a couple psi in some bags and I’ll be good to go.

Not nearly enough hitch weight to actually affect my front end. I just want to make sure I’m nose down a smidge for TSS and my headlights.

 

Your situation is the perfect example for airbags.

Yes I’m aware! I just don’t like to be nose up and not having to adjust headlights is just a bonus.

 

Im not sure what year it started but all newer tundras have a little roller knob lower left dash between the steering wheel and the door to aim beams up or down. I think the roller has like 6 settings.

 

Never heard of it before. Kinda surprised that the FED would allow the headlights be be adjusted higher than the factory setting, and possibly blind oncoming traffic. I used to have BMW's that would automatically adjust the headlights to compensate for the vehicle ride height, but they used sensors on the front and rear suspensions that would determine vehicle trim and adjust the headlights to compensate. But the driver had no control over them.

 

When you have weight in your bed or hitch the headlights go up. The knob aims them down, not up even more.

 

I understand that with a rear load, the front end will incline up, which raises the illumination pattern of the headlights. If the adjustment knob only allows the headlight aim to be lowered below the standard, level ride adjustment, then it makes sense. I just wasn't sure how the system was dsigned.

Just playing Devils's advocate for a min, what would stop someone from setting the initial, level ride headlight adjustment too high. And then use the knob to lower them to a normal pattern. Would it be possible for them to then use the knob to raise the headlights above normal?

 

Sure it’s possible, but couldn’t anyone do that manually? I don’t think the adjustments being accessible on the dash makes Toyota any more liable for poorly leveled headlights.

Anyone could just adjust the headlight too high directly on the light itself on any car to accomplish the same thing.

 

What are the t connectors for? I'm about to purchase the ride rights with daystar cradles. I have stock suspension. Anything else you guys recommend?

 

They make it so it equalizes the pressure between the bags.
Pro: you only have one air nozzle to inflate.
Con: you won't be able to compensate for uneven loads in the bed. You will also have two nozzles to inflate.

air bags. I Don't have a garage where I live. Can anyone recommend an easy install set of rear airbags?

 

The Firestone Ride Rites are a pretty easy install.

 

Firestone Ride Rites, 60 minutes by yourself, no garage needed and the only part that needs to be removed is the rubber bump stops. Leave the vehicle on its wheels, no need to jack up.

 

Airlift is the same regarding time and only have to remove the rubber bump stop.
