Looking at adding air bags to my rear suspension so I can load the 4 wheeler in the bed and tow the camper without major sag - which brand does everyone here recommend?

Also, about how much should I expect to pay with a compressor and without? Is this a project that can be installed at home relatively easily?

Is this combo a good option? Probably $850-$900 after tax.

I have used Firestone Ride Rite. Those come with double convoluted bags. More forgiving ride quality than single convoluted bags.

What does that setup cost? Do you have an on-board compressor?

I got airlift with the internal bumper and the compressor. Forgot how much it was but the onboard compressor was worth it. It’s easy to do at home. Hardest part was cutting the stock bump stops and that wasn’t very hard.

    Does about $900 sound right?

Another Firestone Ride Rite fan. I went without an on board compressor. I use my bags 2-3 times/month and find it easy to use a portable hand held compressor. I paid $320 from SD Spring with free shipping. Pretty easy install.

Nice!! Do you find it hard to regulate/equalize the pressure in the bags?

Easy peasy. I opted for running the lines separately but I know some use a Y-splitter line to help equalize the pressure. I put the valves on the outside edge of my license plate.

How much does the 4 wheeler weigh, and what is your tongue weight? Airbags aren't really meant to be used with a weight distribution hitch. When you air up using a weight distribution hitch you're putting more weight on the rear axles that was transferred back into the trailer and the front wheels. You could potentially damage your truck.

Ride rites, 350 bucks installed yourself in 60 minutes. Use a 20 dollar 12 volt compressor..

This is what I have, the compressor is dope but I would've gone with the Firestones. The internal bumper in the air bags suck ass, even with a 3" lift there's hardly any up travel before you hit it. The downside with the compressor is it won't let the bags go under 5psi, so I pull the fuse and then disconnect the quick connections on the bag when I'm not using them, makes the ride 50x more bearable with no weight since the bags can fully deflate then.

Can’t find the one I got now but it seems like maybe about $350 each for bag kit and compressor. The on board compressor is nice because it has a remote that I can use in the cab. I don’t change the air that much though and a cheaper 12v compressor would have worked fine.

I haven’t noticed it riding rough, but have been driving 4wds for awhile and am used to it. I do have the cb +2 shackles so about 1.5” lift and the daystar cradles.

I have 3.5" lift shackles, and disconnected the bags from the stock cradles since they were limiting droop I found. Seemed like a combination of any bag pressure, lack of up travel due to the internal bumper, and decreased droop made the ride horrible. Though maybe I'm being picky, suspension that isn't comfy hitting bumps at speed doesn't do it for me lol

4 wheeler is about 500 pounds and the tongue weight of my camper is about 289 pounds.

I’m not using a weight distribution hitch.

I've never heard of this. Do you have an article or something that explains this theory? THe purpose of leveling is to shift weight off the rear axle. How do you assert weight is increasing as the load levels?
I ditto this. I'm not sure if I would buy them again as much as I offroad. I would at least get the double convoluted bagts as someone stated above. Also look into Sumo Springs!

I bought the biggest 12v compressor from oreilly auto parts. Takes about 8 seconds to fill each bag. You dont need the big one for the bags but I like that it will fill my truck tires when I air down or get a flat or something. Takes a few minutes but the peace of mind is huge.

I’m having a hard time understanding what he’s saying, but I think he’s saying air bags increase the load on your rear axel.

If that is in fact what he’s saying, he is correct.

In this video they test both with scales under all axels.

I used both rear air bags, and a weight distribution system on my 4Runner without issue. That being said, one has to set up the weight distribution hitch properly or you could do damage to the vehicle. The weight distribution system will work with airbags, if you make the adjustments to the hitch system after airing up the air bags to the ride height you intend to tow with. If you setup the weight distribution system before inflating the air bags, the weight transfer geometry will no longer be correct. Anything you do to change the ride height of the vehicle will require checking the adjustment of a weight distribution system.

Agreed. They don’t run both in the video so no data on running both. This sounds reasonable. I know a hundred guys running airbags and they all love them...

When I had the 4Runner, I towed a 27' camper, two different utility trailers, and a boat trailer. Each required a different pressure setting for the air bags to attain the ride height I desired. The ability to adjust the air bags to accommodate different loads was the reason I went with them instead of heavier rear springs.

Now that I have the Tundra, and I no longer tow the camper (it is set up permanently at my hunting site), the two utility trailers and boat trailer do not strain the suspension enough to warrant air bags.

That's what I'm saying. WDH work on rotational force. The more squat you have, the harder the hitch is working. Adding in a cushion of air takes some of that away.

Many people use them both and it's fine. My initial concern here was weight. I didn't realize he had such a light tongue weight. I was thinking he was 600 - 700lbs of cargo and 600 - 700lbs of tongue weight.

Nope the good news is it’s just a 2500# camper. Odd that it makes me sag at all really, but it does bring the nose up enough to annoy me. Haha

OK, now that I can see your truck and trailer, I got one question. How do you fit an ATV in the back of that bed and still tow the trailer???? My Polaris Sportsman is almost 7' long, and it looks like your bed is the shorty, only 5.5' long.

I take the tailgate off and strap the atv into the bed! I have a Honda rancher and it’s relatively compact.

OK, then back to the original issue. If you feel the rear sags too much with both the ATV in the bed and the camper connected, then a set of air bags are probably your best answer. You can air up when towing, to maintain proper ride height, and air down when not needed. The amount of load will still affect the front end because of the weight after the rear axle will cause it to lift the front a bit. But, with the air bag system lifting the rear end, at least you will ride level.
