If you're talking about an upgrade to the 2018+ TRD Pro style headlight housings, then keeping the original DRL function of your combined DRL/turn signal amber is optional. @iHacker thread shows how to depin or cut the DRL wire, which leaves turn signal function unchanged. The 2018+ housings have white LED DRL, so the DRL function is no longer required in the turn-signal bulb. Some leave the DRL wire so the the turn-signal bulb still operates with the LED DRL.

If you're asking if you can have your original style DRL (turn signal bulb) in white and the turn signal in legal amber, the answer is NO, because the bulb is not smart enough to decide when it should be white or amber as needed.

The vled switchbacks are when you use the hdrl controller.

Good information for @MOT3L6 and everyone using vleds. Thanks for the correction.

Has anyone installed the JDM ASTAR LED turn signals in the front turns and add in VLED red 921 rear turn signals? I'm going crazy trying to get all this to work with VLED resistors. I've come to the realization that Tundras in the new models like resistors on all 4 corners to work I just want to make sure that a VLED VLR-6 on each rear turn signal will work with the JDM ASTAR LED front turn signals. Any advice is appreciated.

I just meant if I was going to keep amber drl. i noticed on the vled extreme had this note "Not for use in DRL applications where the high mode is constant." but I didn't notice anything on the triton amber

Since that is a question dealing with vled product limits, I would consult vled tech service directly.

Just to be clear, no aftermarket LED is plug and play for ALL Gen3 Tundra models.

From what I've read here, aftermarket LEDs work without resistors only in the front for 2018+?. Some have "theorized" the resistance is built into certain aftermarket LEDs so resistors are not required. That is incorrect, there is no resistance built in. The user just got lucky that his Tundra's brain doesn't need additional resistance for the fronts to function properly with LED bulbs (no hyper-flash).

When that 2018+ owner decides to convert the rears, then they have problems and are forced to add resistance to the circuit. The rears have always been incandescent. Correct resistance only needs to added at one location in the circuit, not necessarily at all four corners. The vleds I shopped had a proprietary resistor and harness for each location. They are very high quality, but the vled resistors are going to be required at every corner for 2017 and earlier, and you're going to pay much more.

Well, when I plugged them into the fronts, they played. I didn't add anything for the back.

Works for my needs with no issues. Thanks for your concerns.

That has been my conclusion also. I have the JDM Astars up front and I’m about to add the Vled 921 and VLR-6 resistor in each rear, just trying to find out if the VLR-6 is enough resistance with JDM bulbs up front and was wanting confirmation from someone that did it. Thx

Not concerned, and I'm happy they worked for you. Now, if you later decide to convert your rears, and experience hyperflash, maybe you'll remember this conversation. For 2018+, with no hyperflash for LEDs in the fronts, a single 6 ohm, 50W resistor in the rear on each side is likely the solution. You're not thinking about it now, but maybe later...

My purpose was to keep those with earlier trucks from thinking JDMAstars will plug and play, then question why they have hyperflash when using a combination of JDMAstars and vleds.

Just curious...Why use JDMAstars in the front and vleds in the rear? If you're willing to take a chance on cheap aftermarket LEDs in the front, why would you spring for high-dollar LEDs in the rear? Are you using vleds with the proprietary resistor?

I would be doing that. I tried both versions of the front VLEDS with T-Adapter resistor kit so I didn’t have to splice and it did not fix the rear like it does on 2017 models and older. I just gave up and sent everything back and just put in the JDMs up front. I’m finally making progress and have come to the conclusion that the tears each need a resistor regardless what’s up front. I have to either bite the bullet and crimp the wires with vled kit or wait until June when they advised me they are releasing a PNP 921 kit with resistor. I may go back with VLEDs up front once I order up the tears. No doubt they have awesome quality stuff.

I reread your post, and was preparing a reply. For a 2020, you probably did not need a resistor for only the fronts. Adding additional resistance with the vled resistor is what messed things up for you, causing you to send it all back.

With the JDMAstars up front, you can convert the rears either with another aftermarket LED like the Nakobo I used (bottom of the page), and by adding a generic "China Queen" 6 ohm resister at the rear. OR, you can use the vled with their proprietary 6 ohm resistor. Results will be the same. Quality may be higher with the vled, but the cost will definitely be higher.

Edit: @NuTundra18 Looks like that Amazon link for the Nakobo LED is defunct. Do an Amazon search for LED 915/921, you'll have to select from whats available comparing watt rating.

So JDMAstars work for front blinkers of a '20? I'm not interested in the back right now. Amazon says they do not fit my '20. Just want to confirm before buying
