Jump Pins 4 & 13. Turn key to on for 20 minutes. Turn off. Truck should start.

Could you elaborate what the ECU handshake is for? I'm interested in getting the OvTune as well, could we flash our current ECU to a 2018 version? Or is it a hardware issue?

 

If you physically swap the ECU in a truck, the immobilizer does its job and keeps the truck from starting. You have to go through a pairing process to accept the new ECU.

you can’t just flash a different ecu code revision to the ecu.

 

that’s the thing with my 20, for pin 13 there is nothing there. Meaning there is not a wire on that pin. So if I jumped 4 and 13 as is then it would do nothing. Since I can’t get TIS to work I’m stuck since I can’t look up the diagrams.

 

Are you sure you are looking at the connector the right way? If I remember right, in mine it’s upside down (rotated 180 from the picture). So 13 is actually the top row and 4 is the bottom row. And 14-16 are all blanks like you describe.

so it’s the 4th pin from the left in the top row, then you go straight down and one to the right.

if you can get the wiring diagram you should be able to do it at the ECU as well if they don't run it up to the OBD connector any more.

 

Why can't you just flash a revision to the ECU? I have done it before through techstream on my Tacoma.

 

That’s super weird. Yeah that’s definitely different.

 

The person he's trying to help has a 2020MY, there likely aren't any revisions. The avenue that appears to be available to get OVTune on a 2020 is to swap in a 2018 ECU and program it for that newer vehicle.

 

You can flash updates, just like the Tacoma with techstream.

you cant just pick a random code revision and flash it. It won’t let you.

for example on the Tacoma, you could update 04b03 to 04b04. But you cannot go from 04b03 to 04b31. You also cannot go backwards from 04b04 to 04b03.

same deal with the tundra.

 

Yup. Typically if there is an update, mat can get the TS CUW file to the unpack the code and use that to start figuring out how to tune it. Without any updates, you have to get the ecu code by dumping the contents from the ecu which is much more difficult.

 

Thanks, for a minute there I was second guessing that I was mixing up two slightly different subtopics and spewing garble.

 

Also keep in mind, the steps may sound basic but there’s no how to on how to do any of this stuff. It’s not like you just buy an adapter, hit a few buttons and you’ve got what you need.

the code is written in assembly which is a low level machine code and incredibly difficult.

also throw in some other curveballs like encryption and no documentation and that’s why this takes a while for updates and to add new ecus.

 

I finally got access and that terminal is gone on the 2020. So you can force it through techstream but when I try to connect to the ecu @OVTune sent me it will not connect to it in techstream. I get communication errors.

 

Are you running a version of TS with support for the 2020 model year? There was one floating around on tw that didn’t work on 19+ trucks. I don’t remember the number off hand.

 

Yes the version is compatible. I can access everything on the original '20 ecu.

I too am interested in an offering of a 2018 ecu, pre-tuned from OVTune. If that's the only way to do it.

18 ECUs are considerably expensive ($1000+).

anyways, I wanted to let everyone know that we are making some business changes due to recent events related to COVID-19.

First, we are no longer going to sell Tundra tunes / flash kits. A few reasons for this.
1. We have enough work to catch up on and updates to push out, and I don't want to be overloaded.
2. Supply chain issues.
3. We are moving forward with our release of our vF Tuning software, which will support the Tundra. This will allow people to tune their own trucks if they want to.

This will not affect current tunes or people who want updates / patch stuff, etc. We just won't be taking on tuning of new Tundras.

However, that doesn't mean you're completely left out. Because our vF Tuning software will come with some "example" Tunes that you can use to build upon, or a reference from. They will be some tunes we have already created for you guys.

So you have the option to use/modify/create from an example, or completely build your own.


Also if you have our flash kit you can also get vF Tuner
