on a side note I’ve been laid up for the past 2 days with a nice case of tonsillitis headache and a fever. Ended up going home halfway though my work set (firefighter/emt) and hoping the tons of sick people I’ve transported the past few weeks didn’t pass on the COVID to me. Had to get tested and hoping it comes back negative so I can get back to normal life and hug my kids and wife.

 

Anyone know if there is an easy way to get the mirror caps off? Last time I took them off I broke a few clips.

Rough day at work. They straight up fired 16 people, 4 being techs, sadly some of the best techs we had. Sucks

 

That's terrible. It's happening quickly. The mayor tried to shut down the county in which my work resides but thankfully got voted down. Was a scary day for sure and still quite a few to go before we can feel stable.

 

We shall see what happens in the next two weeks. I’m good for now.

 

My Mom and Dad both have been laid off in the last week. At least PA is fast tracking unemployment for this since they closed all non-life sustaining businesses over the weekend.

I've been dropped to 4 hours a week but still receiving full pay while at home, my wife is still going to the office every day since she's in accounting for medical marijuana grower/processor and deemed essential.

This whole deal is hurting a lot of folks, I get it's necessary but it sucks nonetheless.

 

I started my new job today. They gave me a laptop and sent me home. Insane times we live in. Praying for anyone that's lost their job and thankful to have one myself

 

Not sure "necessary" is right. There's so much that's not known yet. Quarantining an entire state will have immediate effects that we're already seeing and maybe a worse longterm solution than letting the virus run its course. Making these kneejerk reactions, imo, is a bit reckless but at the same time, I'm glad I do not have to make them. Not sure the right answer but you can already see the "stay at home" methods are not being listened to in NY and Cali yet the effect on the small businesses are still very real!

I do hope we get past this quickly and rebound back to where we were a few weeks ago!

 

Yeah like a few have said we'll never know if we overreacted but we'll know if we underreacted.

I don't think anyone is happy about the situation. I haven't left the house since Friday and I'm going a little stir crazy since the weather had been crappy.

 

Those few being fear mongers. History already dictates that we have exponentially overreacted. The world-wide deaths that will follow from the financial collapse are baked in...and it will be far worse than in 2008.

Just for comparison...16K deaths world wide so far... the WHO says we have as many as 650K deaths per year from the run of the mill flu. We are going to look back on this as foolishness.

 

That blows man...when it's all over the economy will be trashed and nobody will be buying cars for awhile...techs will be needed more than ever is what I expect fixing existing cars. Hope you can make it through to that point without getting the axe.

 

I'm not going to disagree but you also can't compare long term numbers to something that's ongoing.

Absolutely...that's why these media people are being so disingenuous when they are touting "high" mortality rates for CV ....it will drop precipitously when all the people who were infected are counted in the calculation...but that won't be known until it's over. Do you EVER remember, in the past, of them talking about mortality rates of the current flu season, even in 2017 when it was 3 times as high as normal? Nope, precisely for the reason above.

 

This is the part that I think a lot of people are overlooking. I feel like CV already ran through my area in February. My wife's office was nearly shut down in February because of incredibly high absences from 'flu' that was lasting 2-3 weeks for otherwise healthy people. I think when more realistic numbers of how many people have contracted CV and were unaffected or mildly affected, the mortality is going to plummet.

At this point, I'm more apt to believe this was an engineered and intentionally released bio-agent sent to convey a message that we (the US) need to back off on the trade war against the East than a naturally occurring, aberrant CV that is just decimating populations.

 

My wife and I were talking about this 2-weeks ago. I had something that didn't cause fever but I had body aches, chills, headache and very fatigued. My son had a 103-104.5 fever for 5-days (it would last about 4hrs then come down to about 100-101 for 2-3hrs then shoot back up). He was tested for the flu day-1 and came back negative. The Dr. said he may have been tested "too early". My wife ended up with pneumonia and in the ER getting breathing treatments. They asked her about travelling but since we hadn't they didn't test her for anything.

I hope that was the virus and we already dealt with it but can't be sure. If it wasn't and my wife just had pneumonia, I definitely fear her getting the virus.

 

We had the same thing in this area late Dec-Jan, very possible that it's the same thing but without having done any testing it's all conjecture.

The 2nd part is inaccurate. The genome has been sequenced and there is no evidence of it being engineered or altered in anyway. It's also been sequenced by multiple different institutions around the world so they aren't just looking at the data coming out of China.

I read that article yesterday. I'm not convinced so easily. And I found this paragraph particularly offputting.

"This evidence for natural evolution was supported by data on SARS-CoV-2's backbone -- its overall molecular structure. If someone were seeking to engineer a new coronavirus as a pathogen, they would have constructed it from the backbone of a virus known to cause illness. But the scientists found that the SARS-CoV-2 backbone differed substantially from those of already known coronaviruses and mostly resembled related viruses found in bats and pangolins."

The bolded and underlined part in particular stands out to me. Are the scientists behind this article involved in development of bio-weapons? Or are they simply speculating as to how they think a bio-weapon engineer would work? It seems to me if it causes illness to other animals, it wouldn't be too far a jump to cause illness to people. Pretty sure Mad Cow and trichinosis are animal maladies that affect people.
I find the idea that the COVID19 is derivative of a strain of CV from pangolins, passed through a civet or ferret to be quite a stretch. Your same article says that the bat strain doesn't have the cleavage sites on the CV cells to enter the human cells like the pangolin strain does. So either it's from a bat and evolved one home run of an evolution to develop the cleavage sites, or it's from a pangolin and was passed through [at least] one other species to us. Both seem like a long road to get where we are.

 

I think what they're saying in the bolded part is if you were building a virus why would you take a chance on a virus that would have a low instance of causing illness in humans.

I also wouldn't discount the mutation aspect there are plenty of viruses that mutate constantly. Nature is a fickle creature and is pretty resilient.

I'm not saying it couldn't have been made but it does at this point seem very unlikely.

 

I get what you're saying.
But, at least where I work, we often do things that don't make the most sense and occasionally do try new things.
