Need some advise. I have a leaving that’s coming from the transfer case. I unbolted and cleaned up the transfer case skid plate and saw a marginal amount of oil also on the t case. Cleaned and bolted everything back up and the leak has come back.

What are your thoughts? If so, how hard is this to do and are there any posted DIY’s?

How many miles do you have? Maybe you’re still under powertrain warranty.

Looks like it’s leaking at the output shaft seal.

    This ^^

This is not a horrible job to fix.

    Torque wrench
Socket set and various hand tools
    Seal install tool
    Lock tight

Mark driveshaft position to minimize vibrations.

Make sure seal is installed flush, lube seal up before installing the yoke to the output shaft. You don’t want to damage the new seal.

Torque output shaft nut and driveshaft bolts to recommended specifications.

So it can be fixed right on the truck? Just remove driveshaft, pull out seal out and tap the new seal in place?

Did you ever get this fixed? Mine developed a leak last year. Unfortunately, mine was leaking from the front output shaft, and the front seal cannot be replaced "on the truck"...at least not for my Gen 3. The T-case has to be removed and opened to replace the $5 seal. At least $1800 according to Toyota. I drained mine and used some AT-205 with new fluid. That seemed to help for several months, but just noticed it was leaking again yesterday.

Only suggestion I would add is to cover the shaft splines with electrical tape before installing the seal...might be some sharp edges on the splines.

Just loosen the driveshaft at the T/C. Push shaft back just a little and drop the front of the shaft. Push shaft aside. Remove yoke and seal. Check the yoke for a seal groove. Replace it if it’s deep. Make sure to not lose the spring in the seal after it’s put in p,ace. Reinstall shaft. Check fluid level.

did the transfer case need to be opened up to replace the seal? Did Toyota do the work?

Good write up. I called my dealer and it’s still under warranty. Good thing since my warranty runs out July 28th. Now starting to think I might pay to extend it. That whole other topic.
