Was I supposed to order new mounting brackets when switching to a double din head unit? I'm having to force and bend the brackets to make it fit in the dash.

Damn. No mention of this on Crutchfield at all. Typically they will guide you through this at checkout.

I ordered the Metra kit on Amazon for like $22.xx.

The cheap one that's like $6 didn't work correctly.

I also tried the stock brackets. I feel I could have made it work but wasn't worth the hassle.

Well, after working on this for hours I beleive Crutchfield may have shipped me a dead head unit. I'm not getting any power. This was a Scratch and Dent unit but there is no physical damage. I thought their website said they test them before reselling but I just checked and I apparently imagined that. I've tried it both with and without the brake bypass to see if that was causing it.

The lesson here is to always test it first before spending hours on the backup camera and bypass.

Anyone familiar with a new OEM 1st Gen Tundra muffler and if there are identifying markings on said muffler that indicate it is indeed an OEM? @empty_lord @speedtre or anyone else that geeks out on parts.

Maybe not THE go to. I spent about 7-8 years in the 12v audio/video/alarm/tint world. 4 years of that as an MECP master tech. I left the industry in 2012 around the introduction of the CAN, MOST bus systems. So give me any vehicle pre 2014 and I can almost tell you any disassembly and wiring locations/colors from memory.

In other words, if it can be done with a relay, I’m your guy. If it needs a data bus interface, Ive been out of the game a bit but give me some time and I could likely make something work.

The Alpine has all those different holes in the side so that it will align with the many different factory DIN mounting brackets used by imports through the early 2010s. Those little nipples that stick out will usually line up with 2 tiny holes and then you will see at least 2 screw holes on each side that align with the factory brackets. Use the Metra 95-8202 to fill in the holes left along the side of the radio.

The double USB port for the Tundra showed up today

and noted the tailgate handle on a co-workers midlife crisis (2019ish Tundra). Wonder if that could be made to fit a 1st gen.

It could technically. You’ll need to graft the new tailgate into the old. I’ve considered it. But I couldn’t bring myself to cut up a brand new Toyota tailgate.

Someone did a 3rd gen Tacoma tailgate grated into a 1st gen tailgate.

Totally forgot to take pictures. But fixed up the body harness I got from the junkyard, reattached all the light wires. So it should be ready to put in the truck when it’s back

I've been wanting a tail gate reinforcement plate and been considering if I could make a 3rd gen taco one work

While this doesn't help much Erik, I wouldn't beat myself up too much. When I selected your year/model Tundra and that radio, it had a link "See the installation gear you'll need" and it pointed out you'll need to use your existing brackets.

It says that Metra is only good for 03-06 Tundras. They must have changed something. Since you're the radio guy, I may need help after I call Crutchfield. I'm going to test my old radio this morning and make sure it still works just as process of elimination.

Is the bracket needing to be bent wider because new radio is not as wide ? If so, can you add washers on bolts between bracket and radio to make up width difference ?
If new radio is wider and bracket needs to be bent in, that would suck.

The new radio is wider so I'm having to squeeze the brackets to fit the radio in the pocket. I'll ask Crutchfield about it on the phone once they open.

That's sucks bro. I was able to use the metal mounting brackets off my factory Toyota radio with my Kenwood double din unit just fine. The only other pieces I had to use are the Metra 95-8202 kit to close up the side gaps.

@empty_lord mentioned this the other day. The 00-02 had a different size bezel and radio. That's likely why you brackets don't work

I'm a big fan of Dean and Fernando @Five Car Stereo, so while you're in there this morning, if you have a VOM and you feel froggy, take a look at the voltages of new harness while unhooked from radio. At the 1:45 mark of video below, Dean tells what each colored wire is for the Alpine iLx W650. The power harness ones that are important you could check are the Red(ACC wire), Yellow w/fuse(Power wire) with IGN ON....etc.
