I talked with a body shop about painting my chrome bumpers to match paint color on 2nd gen tundra and he said it would have to be sandblast first before he can paint them which he doesn't do himself and doesn't know what it would cost to get them blasted.
    1. Can anyone confirm it needs to be sandblasted first?
    2. How much would something like that run?

Sandblast or sand them, yes you would need to. I would just get an orbital sander use 120 grit to get the chrome off, then 220, and up to 800 or 1000 grit. But thats just me and im cheap lol.

I've thought about doing the same thing on my Gen 2 SSM. Blacked out bumpers and grill surround looks a little too heavy on the SSM in my opinion. Let us know if you end up doing it!

Yes I had mine done in Line-X Premium. It is alot more durable than paint and more truck "aggressive" looking. I recently had my Bushwacker flares done to match. I can take fresh pics in the morning.

i sandblasted and painted mines. IMO the best way to do it. you could use a sander, just make sure you cut through all the chrome. just scuffing the chrome doesnt seem to produce long lasting results from what ive read

You can DIY with a solution of hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) and peroxide.

3:1 (3 parts of hydrogen peroxide, 1 part hydrochloric/muriatic acid)

It’ll take several gallons in a bin large enough to soak the parts in. Let it soak for several hours until the chrome comes off.

Search the forum - there’s posts on using this.

    And now for the warnings:

Muriatic acid is highly corrosive. Wear safety googles & rubber gloves.

ALWAYS POUR/ADD ACID INTO WATER - NEVER POUR WATER INTO ACID.
First fill the container with hydrogen peroxide and THEN add muriatic acid. (Unless you want to explode. In that case, go ahead and pour water into acid.)

Has anyone on this forum done this with success? How hard is it to acquire the hydrochloric acid?

They have - though I don't know who. Do a search for it.

You can get it from Tractor Supply. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/search/muriatic acid

I have used muriatic acid to clean rusty parts and strip chrome from smaller pieces, but never anything as large as a bumper or bumper ends. Muriatic acid is commonly used for cleaning stains off masonry. Unless the rules or liability concerns have changed, muriatic acid has historically has been available where masonry materials are purchased.
