I don't get it? If you are still in the warranty period/mileage limits then it's not up for debate. It's not like they can flip a coin and deny coverage - if you're covered then you're covered.

I agree completely. I don't know why they wouldn't fix it. I'll see what he has to say and if he says they won't then start the whole process of going to Toyota Corporate etc. etc.

Toyota should be using the black sealant from the start instead of putting owners through the fiasco of having the top half of there engine torn down.

I might be mistaken but thought I read somewhere that both sealants are the same. The black color allows Toyota to identify that the sealant has been reworked vs the grey that is from the factory. The cause of the leak is due to inadequate/un-uniform amount of sealant that is being applied in assembly.

I don't think the black sealant is "better" or any different than the grey stuff. It isn't that they should use the black sealant - they should git rid of the crappy design. A FIPG for this application is stupid. But, Toyota is a huge fan of the stuff. My current project vehicle is a 1996 Land Cruiser. Right now I am rebuilding the engine and fixing all of the numerous leaks it had. The amount of FIPG that is used on it is sort of staggering.

One would think Toyota could just QA the crap out of the part of the engine assembly if they didn't want to change the design...doesn't seem like an insurmountable issue to me....

I'm pretty sure they wont fix it because the next Tundra will have a different engine so we will see cam leaks til the end of the 5.7L...

At this point no...but this issue has been around from the beginning. Unless it's a truly tiny % of affected vehicles it just seems like something that wouldn't be too hard to fix from a QA POV - you know - train someone to put on the correct amount of sealant crap and problem fixed!

The grey sealant is definitely not the same. It gets hard and brittle over time. The black does not. It stays semi flexible

Agreed, Toyota should have solved this a long time ago. They tout reliability and constantly moving towards improving, this issue just shows you they are no different then other manufacturers. This should have been fixed back in what like 07...2020 here and we still have cam tower leaks.

I was also under the impression it was different as well, I think someone mentioned it was more "tacky" then the grey.

Do the plugs get pulled when this tear down is being done? My plugs need to be changed and while it’s torn down I may as well get them done too

Coil packs are removed, but plugs do not need to be removed. But very easy to do at that point

Are there any statistics on the percentage of vehicles affected by the cam tower issue? I looked at 10 different Tundras when I was looking to purchase, and only saw 2 that were leaking badly, and one other that was weeping.

I concluded that the percentage was small and bought a Tundra anyway. What I didn’t know was that I would continue to worry that mine would start leaking one day. Not a good feeling since I have no warranty.

Does babying the truck reduce that chances of it leaking? That may be the route I take until it’s gone.

Neither my 2017 nor my 2019 are leaking at this point. I’d love to be a fly on the wall in a room with the Toyota engineers talking about this issue. Toyota has the best data at this point but obviously they’re not going to share it. Coming to a forum and starting poll is just going to give a skewed, self-selected sample that would likely grossly overestimate the percentage of those reporting this particular problem. Maybe some Sunday when the weather is warm and the dealers are closed I’ll stop and look a some used Tundras to see if any have evidence of the leak. It really sucks for those stuck with motors that have the leak at low mileage and aren’t getting any support from Toyota.

Not to mention this engine is used in nearly $100K vehicles. My guess is it's not wide spread...

That's been discussed before, vehicles like the landcruiser have a Japanese built 5.7 I think. It could be an issue here in the states with the facility that produces the 5.7 for the tundra.

Mileage isn't a key to this issue, its been all over the map from very low mileage to higher mileage trucks.

All the ones I’ve done at work have had FPIG (the gasket) applied way to thin at the point where they all leak. Out of the 20-25 I’ve done in 4 years, none have come back leaking. Pretty sure there’s a assembly line fuck up somewhere personally.

Which makes it even more (sadly) amazing! Does it just come down to someone in management in San Antonio saying, "Now Jim, you're the FPIG application guy today, so listen to me closely. You have to apply this sufficiently and uniformly on each and every engine", and yet somehow San Antonio messes it up? It doesn't seem like it's a difficult task.

So the Japanese robot is more skilled than the American robot? This whole issue exists because they couldn’t email the code for the Japanese robot to San Antonio? Doesn’t make sense...

In the least they could position a QA dude to inspect each one...

I honestly have no clue what goes on in the factory. All I know is I’m stuck reselling these. And let me tell ya, warranty time on these is terrible. Eek

I've watched a few vids on the re-seal being performed and the general consensus was that it took about 8-10 Hrs. , is that about right?

My 2017 CM Limited has 40,000 some and the 2019 SR5 is at about 6,000 something. The wife’s 2013 LX570 just flipped 90,000 and is dry too.

FWIW, the LXs and the LCs leak too as I visit those forums from time to time. Apparently no magic happens in Japan. I’m fact, my 2017 Tundra is tighter and has less little noises than my 2018 4 Runner, which was assembled entirely in Japan. The two were assembled within 7 months of one another and the 4 Runner only has 13K miles on it or so.
