Thought this was interesting to look at.

Blue is for Honda Element 2.4L naturally aspirated
Short black is for Tundra 4.7L naturally aspirated
Tall black is for GTI 1.8T turbo

Mobil1 specs a smaller oil filter for our trucks, but there is a larger Mobil1 filter that fits even though its not spec’d.

 

So I think I'm gunna buy some retro'd headlights. Anybody seen this Nomad Retrofits in FB? They seem to specialize in Toyotas and the price is right. Might be able to budget it next month.

I don't have any. The dude posted on one of the tundra groups I'm in on FB. It was a close up of a 3rd gen 4 runner headlight. Looked good. He quoted me $430 for new housings with the chrome reflector left intact (you can have em paint it black etc), retro'd projectors with amber halos, includes balasts and hid bulbs.

 

Hmm I wonder if the oem filter can still be had. Looks like that bigger filter is from the fj40s and diesel Toyota pickups

I saw the M1-301A at the auto store last time I looked.

 

I've always thought, given the choice - one would want the larger filter available. Theory being larger filter, more filtering, less potential for blockage / pressure buildup.
Of course larger doesn't always fit. On the Pius, a longer filter would hang down & be susceptible to road rash or worse.
...& you'd need to add slightly more oil to properly fill the case, but only a little more.

Any reason one wouldn't opt for a longer/ larger filter (assuming space allows)?

 

The OEM filter is the YZZD-3 on our Tundras. When you go to the auto store and ask for a Mobil1 filter they will give you the smaller one (why I don’t know). The point of my posts/pics is that the YZZD-3 Toy filter and M1-301A look to be the same size and will fit (even though the auto store won’t have it as a spec filter in their system). I ran the smaller M1 filter that came as a combo oil deal. Bought some bigger Toy YZZD-3 filters in a 10 multipack afterwards.

I have no hard data other than preference. Seems our 4.7L engines have a oil cooler on them at the filter area and the more oil the filter can hold the better the cooling? This leads me to believe the bigger filter would work better on our systems.

Another advantage of a bigger filter, outside of having a larger internal filter surface media, is the outside larger metal surface area acts as an oil cooler in itself.

Before I bought my truck I had it inspected at a Toyota dealer, they told me I need a new steering rack.

Turns out I need:
New LCA bushings
2 new wheel bearings
Valve cover gaskets
Carrier bearing
And had a leaking axle seal on the front dif

I’m sure there is more I’ll find as I go but I’d be cautious of assuming they’re going to give you a thorough list of needed maintenance, unless you know someone good.

 

I talked with my dad last night, he has a 2005 Tundra coming up on 500,000KMS. Apparently he has a really good independent mechanic who specializes in Toyotas and was formerly a Toyota master tech. Dad figures I should have this guy do the work. The catch is, the shop is a 24 hour round trip for me...

 

@Professional Hand Model , other than clean, did you do any prep when you painted your plastic trim? My bed liner spray only lasted a few weeks. I cleaned them with alcohol before painting.

 

Scored some Cali raised lights, a scan gauge and a blue sea fuse box with a 100a breaker on a used Tacoma we bought at auction

 

I only wiped mine down with acetone. I did not sand them but should have as I have a few spots like yours which I’ve sanded down and then touched up. I do not have this problem on any outside trim where I’ve used the bed liner or on any areas where I used Acrylic Lacquer as a prime coat first.

Must be some bad mojo between the bed liner and interior trim when lacquer primer isn’t used. Should be an easy fix with some spot sanding and repaint.

I’ll only use Acrylic Lacquer on interior trim, now that I know this, as that stuff has a better finish and bonds like its part of the plastic.

Check out this 1st Gen rear frame member near the back bumper. Saw it in a for sale ad. I wonder what the rest of the frame looks like?

 

Would you guys trust a 14 year old topper to handle the weight of a roof top tent? I've seen plenty of people do it but others have said the fiberglass cracked. I called ARE and they said it "should" be ok.

 

I plan on running a roof rack on mine. But I’m also planning on a small cage to support it inside of the cap


Call the maker and see what they say. Dynamic load is what your looking for. Static will be way higher

 

I mentioned in my last post that I called ARE. I just saw other ARE shells crack that are way newer than mine. So I'm not sure I trust their answer. May just go for it anyways.

 

What bulbs, projectors, and such?

 

Not sure. I just found out about this guy here that makes em and I think I'm going to buy from him instead.

 

No biggie I was just curious. I have my current set I'll be selling after my new set is complete and it's always nice to get a sanity check on pricing. I'll probably still let them go for a pretty low price. Nothing wrong with them, but like all things I've done, I know I can do better next time.

The guy on FB can do different colored halos but he charges like $100 more than the guy here. So white halo will do me fine haha

 

Well here’s what happens to your rear diff if you let bad axle seals leak all your gear oil out, $3200 to fix this case of severe neglect on a 2008 fj cruiser With 220k on the odo

Amazing how the ring gear looks Relatively ok. The pinion is smooth

 

Wow that is crazy. I'm assuming the bearings went bad and the pinion started skipping?
