My wife is pregnant with our first child! :bananadance:

We also bought our first house last year, it needs a lot of updating. Floors, appliances, paint, trim etc. etc. I am thinking I should sell my truck so I have the extra cash to really hammer down on the things that need done.

What do you guys and gals think? Am I jumping the gun or is that a good move?

Only question would be what you can afford and also if you’re doing the work yourself, how will you haul supplies

Well I would not go without a truck. I would have to find something cheaper or something I could buy outright. As of now we dont have much saved between the truck in 2016 and the house in 2018.

4 years in - I doubt you can replace your tundra with a reliable truck for what you owe on it. Any chance you can make extra payments and have it paid off by the time your baby arrives? Tundra is a great family hauler if you can live with the MPG.

BTW, Congrats. Being a dad is the most fun I’ve had in life but my kids are still pre-teen so check back with me in a decade.

Crewmax is great for kids!! You could easily fit three car seats in there. If you had posted this on Tacomaworld, I would have said ditch the Tacoma and get a Tundra.

    Congrats!

I tend to spend too much on vehicles, so I am not the role model on this topic. I currently have 2 vehicles for myself besides the Tundra (wife's dd).

Sit down and prioritize and make lists. You'll make the right decision together with your wife.

Refinance the truck if you need extra cash but don’t want to lose the truck. It’s not a best financial move, but given the circumstances, you get to keep a reliable vehicle that you delay saying it’s completely yours for a few extra years.

Instead of selling the truck see if you can get it paid off. You have 9 months, or I guess a little less if you just found out about the pink feet to make plans. If you bought it in 2016 it is probably not too far from being paid off - if you have to, instead of selling it and buying something cheap that you don't know the history of, refinance the remainder of the balance as if you buy it from your self. It will stretch the payments over a longer period, but it should be more manageable.
That's if you like the truck and would like to keep it.

I actually bought my Tundra because we needed a bigger car for when our first baby came. That said, congrats - you're gonna have to sell your wife and baby.

My father told me once "you never have enough money to raise kids"

Nobody knows what, where you are in your life but you. On the surface it does sound like you would be throwing out the baby with the bath water this soone. Getting rid of your truck are you losing money? Is my first thought.....

Also remember big difference in "needs" and "wants".

    Stop panicking

    Youre a father!

You own a house and will need that truck.

The difference is you will be hauling shit in it instead of ass.
If need be get one with better gas mileage but do the cost difference and you may come to the conclusion that it really isnt that much more to own it.

Keep the Tundra when you have to deal with car seats you will wish you had the bigger back seat. I have 2 kids both in car seats and the fact that they have more room then they know what to do with is awesome. We tried the Sienna and it works but for vacations it just didn't cut it. As for saving money, If you sell your truck it may take you longer than you think to get a new one. So if you are happy with what you have then I would keep it. Just my 2 cents

You are still going to need a vehicle to get around, yes? So say you buy a small inexpensive (relatively) car, used. It lasts a few years or 5. You buy another, and another and another... I had my last Tundra 17 years. No car payments after I had paid it off in 3.5 years. 13+ years with no car payments and very little repair was needed. I saved up for my current Tundra whenever possible over those years, made things much easier when I bought my current truck. And I had a reliable truck all those years and I knew everything that was done to it, no mystery repairs of who knows what service. I felt good transporting my family in it. My .02. If desperate for $$ maybe. But close to payoff, heck NO. Keep it as long as possible and enjoy having no payments and a reliable truck. Having it to haul all the lumber and concrete and furniture and what-have-you that you need for all the projects to come is icing on the cake. And think about all the weekend camping trips with the kids...

Having done this when I first got married I would say just keep the truck. When I got married I married into a family with two kids. I had a reg cab bought brand new Sierra that was a year old. I decided to sell so I didnt have the payment and buy a cash vehicle instead to save money. Bought a 95 f250 with 50k on the clock paid cash. While i enjoyed the novelty of it, it was a small block stick shift, i dont believe it to be any cheaper as i was still upgrading and fixing things on it alot. I ended up selling it a couple years later and bought my tundra. All in all I would have been better off keeping the sierra. Congrats on the kiddo.

This was my sierra. It was fast as hell I loved that truck.

As others are saying, you're gonna need that back seat room. I don't know how tall you are, but I'm 6'4", and my wife is 5'10", and the reason we had to get a new car was because we couldn't get a rear facing car seat to fit into the vehicles we had (FJ Cruiser, and Tacoma).

I say keep the truck and slowly work on the house. I’m pretty sure we can all relate to this: house projects WILL NEVER END. You might finish one of them but the next is waiting, and when your done with that one, it’s time to change something again from your first project as it’s outdated and new things came out. It never ends.

Kids are great. If the house is livable then take time on it. You do not want a nice new kitchen with little kids. I made that giant mistake. They break everything.

Keep the truck, you've already lost whatever you’re gonna lose on it at this point, pay it off and you’re done.

Your not going to make money trading out of that 2016. You might be able to free up a little cash today but you will spend it down the road replacing whatever you buy sooner than you would that 2016 Tundra. Don't think short term.

    First off congratulations!!

when I first found out I was having my first kid I was also a little worried about what I could and could not afford. Once the kids are here you don't even realize anything has changed financially very much You just learn to deal with it. Oh and being a dad is the greatest thing in the world. And it's even better when you're driving a Tundra.:D

I wouldn't sell it... I'd put everything I could towards it so it will be paid off. Then you will have the extra monthly income for expenses and have a nice safe vehicle for Mama and baby to ride around in with you.

Congrats! I’m not a good role model when it comes to vehicles.. you probably ain’t going to gain much by trading or selling but I don’t know your situation. Kids are not cheap, and trucks like yours are not getting any cheaper. You said the house needs updating. Repairs or updating? You will be chasing updates forever, just like your trucks!

My advice coming from a 2 kids under 3 years old and a "new to us house" requiring lots of work is start getting those house projects going and complete. BAbies sleep a lot, you won't and depending on the kid making noise while they are sleeping may not be possible. Try to update a house without making noise.

don't sell or off-load anything until the babies a few months old. Some stuff you'll want to keep and some stuff you just won't have time for for a few years (dirtbikes, toys, etc).
