Would you guys use brake fluid from a bottle that was opened 3 weeks ago? I was thinking about bleeding the brakes on the Rav4 since I have a lot left in my bottle.

I just hate to waste it but you're probably right. My thoughts were that the plastic bottle it comes in is probably just as air tight as the plastic res under the the hood. The reservoir doesn't even have a screw top. I need to get that fancy brake fluid you bought!

I’d use the 3 week stuff on my truck if the existing fluid in the lines was real gnarly just as the front line fluid to push out the old cack. I’d then back it up with some new bottle stuff. It just depends on your situation. To be safe just use new.

The Bosch DOT5.1 plus is good stuff. I only used a litre can to do the whole job this last go around because I had become so good at it after about 3 flushes over a months time. Prior I had used about 2 litres per flush the first go around. The fluid was nasty! I guess it was from all the rubber hose/washer deterioration. The Bosch green color helps identify when to stop bleeding.

I could feel a pedal difference between fresh DOT3 and 5.1 plus (which has a lower viscosity). Check out the reviews on big guurrl.

Bosch plus stuff is better and less expensive than the competition 5.1.

If the 3 week old fluid in the bottle is no good, then neither is the fluid in your RAV4. Master cylinder reservoirs aren't air-tight: they have vents to allow atmospheric air in as the fluid level goes down. At least the brake fluid bottle seals air tight.

Just use the stuff you have on hand.

EDIT: If it was a year or two old, I'd say ditch the old stuff and buy new.

Working on my first Italian Dark Roast. Going to take her on a test drive today to see how these bushings feel on some familiar roads. She needs gas, so I’ll fill up while out in the wild South Coast. Its going to be a great day!

@FirstGenVol I had this conversation with the owner of the good autoparts store in town. Little independent shop that's been there forever, the place you go to for quality parts/supplies.
He told me it's about temperature change. If I'd kept it closed in a temp. stable environment go ahead & use it - it's fine. if it's been on a shelf in the unheated garage for three months, toss it. I keep it in the house, so I used my old stuff w/ no apparent issues.

If I get time next weekend I'm gonna pick up supplies to clay and wax my truck. I picked up a pair of these $6 towels from Harbor Freight and I'm amazed how quick they dried my GTI. I need to get some wheel cleaner while I'm at it but damn it looks nice.

If you're like me and hate drying your truck, buy two of these. Seriously.

@empty_lord when adjusting the LSPV, what exactly are we doing? I've been messing with mine(up and down). By moving it up, are we making the front brakes do more work? Any reason why this would impact pedal feel?

I adjusted it up and now it feels like the front are doing more work but the pedal is also firmer, or I'm imagining it.

Pushing it up causes more brake force in the rear. That’s why when you lift the ass
Of these trucks the brakes feel like they get weaker

If you can't return them, sell them. Might as well get some value out of them, shame to trash brand new product. Or donate to church fund raiser, etc.

I just Googled Walmart effluent filter, and similar products seem to be worth about $50 each!

I checked out the prices of a few 3rd gens, from 2014 to 2020. I think I'm going to bring my 1st Gen to Toyota this spring and pay them to go bumper to bumper on it and tell me what I need to do in order to bring it back to nearly factory new condition. Even if it costs me a few thousand bucks to renew this truck, it's way cheaper than the $35K to $45K a newer truck is gonna cost me.

I have a feeling it's time for a full front end rebuild on the old girl. I still need to get a glovebox latch to replace my broken one. I need a new block heater installed as mine is leaking coolant. So I think I'm looking at around $3000 already.
