Banging drivers side after 6112 install

pass side has all nuts and no sign of cam towers leaks.

 

Post a pic of where the lower control arm attaches to the spindle on drivers side, not too close so we can see the area. There are different ways you can go when installing the coilovers, so I am not sure what areas they messed with.

 

You know, this other thread on here made me think - check the actual mounting bolts that hold the sway bar on the frame; I've never personally messed with those, but some guys apparently do - if they were left loose that would definitely make noise.

The sway bar has 2 bolts to the frame rails. They are tricky to get tight. But why would they have loosened them? Very odd

 

Spitfire, I was just trying to see how the ball joint is seated on the lower control arm in case they popped that - lower right of your photo, but its hard to see - you may want to just double check that nut - the one that looks almost inside the wheel in the pic. Really wish we could see something to point out, but everything looks completely fine - the only other area would be the sway bar to frame bolts - if they chose to remove those.

 

Like in the other thread here - guys have trouble getting the sway bar end links bolted up to the control arm - so some people un-bolt the sway bar from the frame to help with this.

So, I'm just gonna write something out loud here. For context, I have a sketchy faith in humanity; the lens I look through is fairly center, leaning pessimist.

I joined this forum hoping for a little advice about a couple of things I was thinking of doing to my new 1794. Some little sliver of information that might help keep me from making any mistakes. I got here and started looking around and found it to be more valuable every day. Then I start recognizing a steady stream of posts like this one... Some guy needs a hand, and some other guy who doesn't know him goes all the way out to his truck with his phone, probably messes up his PJs, just to get a quick pic for reference. Not for a truck, because everyone here loves their truck; but for some guy that needs a hand.

I'm not leaving.

 

Is the sway bar link to arm bolt tight? My welded on nut broke off on the arm when i re installed mine.

Hey dude, it all looks good from where I’m sitting. There’s a lot that could be loose but I’m guessing that’s all it is. I would take it back or to the dealer to check your torques. It should not “bang”. Period. It could be dangerous as something may be loose. I would just take it somewhere and pay for your peace of mind.

 

Did you get it aligned yet?

 

When I first got into modding my Tundra, I also experienced the ‘be kind and pay it forward’ concept. Many Tundra owners here contribute. Although it’s a virtual platform, the kindness is real. Honestly, it makes owning and driving my Tundra even better than it already is.

@Spitfire I live in California but was in Farmingdale, NY last week. If I get out there again soon, I’d be happy to look at it, although it won’t be for awhile. I’d recommend you get it to the shop that did the work, if you aren’t handy with the wrenches.

Side note I REALLY like how the shocks ride

 

All aligned .. at shop guy was trying to say it could be tire rubbing.. is that possible? On stock tires and offset

 

You should be able to see tire rubber scuffs I would think. Have a gopro you can strap under there? I did that to my Tacoma to watch my steering rack

 

Sure, but rather than guess if that’s the issue, ask him to confirm with certainly. Replace the rub.

 

so he said that he didn't hear anything on the drive (another tech guy this time) i said it has to be something.. he said he retorqed everything and there wasn't any noise. kinda shook my head bc thats what i was asking them to do in the first place.

have to take for a drive and do some tight turns when i get home. didn't have a chance bc i was rushed at lunch

 

1) Darren at Boss knows his shit. That guy probably sells more 6112s than anyone else on the internet. 2) Are you sure all of the alignment bolts are TIGHT TIGHT? I had one loose after install and was getting a pretty big banging noise.

I have a set of 6112s on my truck from Boss - Ill go get a picture of the top, but I don't believe that is your issue.

 

I didnt think for a second it was anything related to boss. I drove around and tested the shocks out. No noise at all now.. musty have not tightened everything the first go around. Hopefully everything is good from this point on.. 5160s are next

I think you are right in the sense that they missed something. Glad it is worked out now.

 

If you actually look closely enough you will see all the top nuts are there.

As far as clunks while turning I'd check the torque on the LCA cam bolts, if left loose you can get clunks/bangs while turning and while cycling them. Other thing to check is the skid plate.

 

That’s great news...I’m running 6112 and 5160 but installed all at once.

Would you mind writing a detailed review of the ride, handling, nose dive, comfort, rebound, etc after you make the switch?

The reason I ask, I love them and they’ve been flawless in 10K miles. I have 6112 and 5100 on my 2016 4Runner and am really happy with that setup also. 5160s are double the price as the 5100s and curious if the daily driving performance is the same or better. No doubt the 5160 is better off road to cool the shock oil and minimize shock fade.

i will once i get the money for the shocks. might be a while. going to disney next week and the wife is onto me

 

6112/5100 here. Great set up. 5160 same shock as 5100 but with res for off-roading/cooling.
