What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

gotta figure out a 12v ignition for the camera, 6v from the head unit ain’t enough. But it is working. Man it was a pain in the ass, but mostly because I was making the harness smaller. Added the reverse input from j28 in the dash up near the air bag.

 

No idea. It could conceivably be original, LOL.

Got some King 2.5 smoothies on out Taco, Eibach Pro Trucks on our 4runner, been pretty happy with the ride quality with both of them with regard to what and how we use each vehicle.

 

Probably not me - I've only joined a little over 2 weeks ago and I've only had the truck (exactly) 20 days ...

But feel free to tease. I should've inspected this better and talked him down a bit more, but it was -38 the day I bought it with -47 wind chill. It started, which was good. I got under quick and looked at the frame - no visible rot. Also good. Lots of paint chips, some dents and surface rust on the body - zero rust-through on the body. Very good. Then I drove it for 5 minutes, went in and out of 2Hi, 4Hi and 4Lo perfectly. Super good. The brakes were CRAP, so I talked him down on that. If I'd known everything else, I might have got him down a bit more.

But regardless, I'm happy with what I paid considering how high the Toyota Tax is in these parts. I didn't pay much for the truck, and I'm doing the majority of the work as DIY projects with my youngest son. It's all good. This Tundra's a keeper long-term.

 

Bilstein 5100 series are fine shocks for the street and light trail use. That being said, I love my Bilstein 6112 / 5160 shocks, best I’ve owned, on & off-road.

 

Do they make rear kings for tundras?

 

Anyone ever have rear icon shocks?

 

From my quick search, 5160 are about 400 for a pair and The Icons and fox are about 300. Have any experience with these?

 

I have those. Ask away.

 

Nope. I’ve run a lot of Bilstein. I don’t like to mix my shocks. The Bilstein 6112 are half the price of the competition, so if you add front & rear you save $500+.

 

How are they for around town driving? Looking for an upgrading in handling

For the front I was looking at those or . But I wanted to run 33s and I didnt want to have the 6112's at like 2-2.5" and have the ride be bad.

Icons in rear? Most of the ride comes from the leafs. You won't notice these as any sort of Improvement. They ride the exact same as the bilstein 4600's I has before.

 

Mm ok, cant it make it more or less bounce depending on the shock? or are they all about the same?

 

You shouldn’t have to go over 2” to clear 33”. I’m at the 1” setting on my 6112 and my next set of tires is likely to be 33”.

My 2001 Tundra cleared 285/75/16 with 2” springs on Bilstein 4600 shocks, no issues.

 

Toyota pads don't, Akebono don't either I think. Every other pad I've seen does. My next pads will be either Toyota or Akebono.

@KarmaKannon you have a backup camera right? How much tailgate handle shows in the pic? Probably going to make a thicker spacer out of stainless since mines in too far even with the biggest spacer they send

 

Pretty sure my Toyota ceramic pads had the chamfer.

 

I'm at 21 1/4 in the front with 4x4 4600 lift and I feel like Id only need like 1/2 inch more but Some people tell me I need 2 or 2.5". I'm pretty new to lifting stuff so I'm not sure where I should be or what to look out for. I'm assuming I could measure my current tires are both locks and see what my clearance is at and how much more I need?

 

i think it more has to do with brake noise and the quality of the brake pad itself. Higher end pads probably won’t have them?

 

4600s don’t give lift unless you changed springs or added a spacer.

I’m an inch higher than you in front at the 1” setting on the 6112.

Like I said, Toyota ceramic. I can verify tomorrow when I do my braided steel lines.

 

Maybe they've changed a bit, I don't recall my old ones having it. My Hawk pads have way too much of it, EBC pads have it as well.

 

I saw somewhere that if you use 4x4 off road bilsteins on a 2wd it will raise the front a little less than an inch. It definitely raised the front but I did it my self and I didnt use any spacers, let me see if I have comparison pictures. The bilsteins came off a 4x4 06 DC

 

This is a before and after, My truck came with "tuned coil springs" and "tuned tokico shocks" which are different than what most people had stock so maybe my truck came lower than most? Hard to know because I havent ran into another people with a TRD Sport.

 

Did they come with the springs? The DC is a heavier truck & should have heavier/longer springs then the AC.

Are you 2WD or 4WD? 4WD likely have taller springs.
