6900 vs 7200 GVWR

These are all 2020s and 4x4s. Got these pics while shopping.

My 2016 Limited Crewmax 4x4 has a GVWR of 7200lbs per the door sticker.

 

2wd or 4wd

My 2018 Limited crewmax 4x4 has the moonroof, limited premium package, and the TRD offroad package. My GVRW shows 7200

 

Ok so my 2020 SX double cab 4X4 has a GVWR of 7100lbs. My truck weighs 5340lbs so I should have a payload of 1760lbs. The decal on the door jam says the max payload is 1300lbs. Why a 450lb difference?

Is that with you weighing it or is it what Toyota said when you bought it? Any modifications? Would the 450 be part of it accounting for passengers?

I keep meaning to go weigh my truck to see what it actually is.

The weight was from the Toyota website under "specs".

 

My weight was a quoted 5170 based upon website but at the scales with a full tank of gas, myself carseats and a few oddball kids toys I was at 5740. I weigh about 190 so definitely more than what was posted. Spray in liner is my only added weight from the dealer. No side steps, or anything else.

 

I am about 95% sure the specs listed on Toyota's website are without fluids. So a 38 gallon gas tank full is about 310 lbs. I imagine the oil and coolant is probably 40 lbs. or so and that is a guess. So a truck that is listed at 5,200 is probably 5,550 before absolutely any add ons or passengers.

tractors are like this also. From what I can tell, all are listed without fluids. Anything from sub-compact tractors up to large farm implements.

 

Different packages add weight too like wheels or skid plate. That’s where your payload went to.

 

I would like to know what the listed weight is actually weighing? Dry it wet? How much fuel? Someone here who hasn't added a bunch of add ons must have weighed their truck.

 

Pretty sure payload is calculated assuming all fluids are full with a 175lb or so driver in the truck

 

That what I would have thought. I wonder if they factor in if the fuel tank is full?


Just found this definition for curb weight.
Curb weight (American English) or kerb weight (British English) is the total mass of a vehicle with standard equipment and all necessary operating consumables such as motor oil, transmission oil, coolant, air conditioning refrigerant, and sometimes a full tank of fuel, while not loaded with either passengers or cargo.

 

I weighed my 2019 Platinum on a certified scale at work about a month ago. It was just calibrated and is certified with in 20 lbs.

Only thing I added to my truck is line-x premium bedliner, bed mat, and soft tonneau cover. I had 3/4 of a tank. It was 6,120 lbs. without me in it. It was a pretty close representation to a completely stock truck.

my truck is listed at 5,670 lbs. on Toyota's site. Somehow it magically picked up 450 lbs.
I also took it across a cat scale and 6,120 is a dead red accurate number.
I really think they are listed as dry weight.

 

Well everything points to curb weight including fluids just by googling. Nothing on Toyota that I could find. Interesting to see the weight discrepancy on my truck.....

 

Wow, that's quite a difference. Do you recall the GVWR on the sticker?

Just doing so quick math using my gvwr of 7100lbs on my SR5 DC that only leaves 980lbs payload? Your truck will have a lower payload because it's a Platinum.

 

The GVWR is 7,200. With me in it it is 6,440 total weight. I only have 760 lbs of weight left with no passengers. If I buy a 3k travel trailer With tongue weight of. 500 lbs. I literally barely have enough room for my wife and 2 small kids.

This is not just Toyota, but this why the tow ratings are absolutely dang near pointless on a 1/2 ton. You will run out of cargo weight and be over your GVWR long before you hit the 10k towing capacity..... I do not care the make or model the big 3 are similar to this also.

 

Ford will advertise 2k of payload and 11k of towing capacity. I looked at Ford first to be honest..... What they don't tell you is this is a base model with several upgrades tow packages, etc.... if you want to sniff those numbers. I looked at a King Ranch F-150 and how it was configured was very close to the Tundra. It was a far cry of those numbers they plaster on tv commercials....

 

Yeah my DC 2wd was almost 5800 lbs on a scale. Pretty dang heavy for a half ton.

 

What I find amazing is that your Platinum has a lower payload than my 2018 Tacoma Sport 4x4. It's payload was around 1100lbs. That just doesn't make any sense to me. I pull a TT that weighs in around 5500lbs and with me and the wife, small dog and 100lbs generator I was just under my payload. One of the reasons I sold it and bought my Tundra.

yep, the listed payload on the door jam sticker I believe is 1,167 lbs. Take my weight and a few accessories and I am begging up against towing legally even with a single axle travel trailer.....

 

Tacoma leaf springs are nearly flattened with an empty bed. If the tundra is heavier than listed curb weights then maybe the tacoma is too?

The brochure lists my trucks curb at 5200. It weighs almost 600 lbs more on scale. I do have e rated tires so thats gonna account for 40 of that. The rest is a lot of weight. Only option is tow package

 

We also weighed a 1/2 ton Ford at work and it was way over the advertised weight just like my Tundra. Not sure what they are truly "weighing" at the factory with these trucks but the Ford was the same way.

 

I am the type of person that does buy things and does things a little over kill.... a $3k riding mower would have done my yard just fine, but a diesel John Deere x758 for $15k will last much longer, haha!

I know it sounds crazy and no one can convince me other wise as I have been towing my whole life, but regardless of what 1/2 tons are rated for I would not think about towing more than 5k with one. If I was towing more than 5k I would go with a 3/4 ton. Call it overkill but that is my experience.....

Ever heard of the tail wagging the dog? Try borrowing your uncles Ford-150 with 3.5 ecoboost rated for 10k of towing. I used it to pull a 6.5x14 equipment trailer to pick up my John Deere x758 and accessories from dealer and weighed about 5k lbs. It was yanking the rear end of that truck around the whole way home on an 80 mile trip from the dealer on the interstate. It was almost scary at times. It would get up to 70 pretty easily but that is pointless and that trailer walked the rear end of that Ford the whole way home.

 

It really comes down to set up. I towed 5.5K with my Tacoma on a properly set up WD hitch with the proper weight on the tongue and not one issue towing. It was extremely stable and not once did I feel the trailer moving the truck. I actually had to make a very quick maneuver last summer to avoid something on the highway and the trailer tracked perfectly behind the truck.
