The best way to black out the emblems is to buy a black truck

 

I bought the cheap overlays and just replaced the tape with 3M. It helps to heat the tape before applying to an ABSOLUTELY CLEAN emblem. Have had them on over a year and have had none lift, fall off, or fade. It's all in the prep work as for most stuff.

 

The Plastidip on mine has faded. I don't know if I want to remove them and debadge completely or dechrome and paint them and put them back on. It is a 2013 so I don't know if the paint will show that they were there or not.

 

Can you link where you bought your overlays?

 

Just picked up these 5 black emblems/badges (not overlays) and the tailgate insert badge from the dealer. See Oem part numbers in pictures if you need them.
I got the dealer to include them when I bought the truck and they just came in. Now I just need to find a heated garage where I can attempt to install them or I’ll have to wait for warmer weather in the spring. I don’t think I want to mess with removing the chrome ones in below freezing temps.


One reason I went with the OEM emblems and not overlays is that I don't like how the overlays fill in the "holes" in some of the letters or other gaps with more black so you can't see the paint through them and the badge looks a little blurry to me and not as sharp as seeing the factory paint through all the spaces in the badge.

 

Got started on my black badges today with easy part, the tailgate insert, since it didn’t require me taking anything off.
The insert was easy enough but I also have the 4x4 emblem and wanted to check where exactly it’s supposed to line up on the tailgate.
Anyone who has the 4x4 badge on the tailgate (TRD Pro) can you tell me the measurements for where to locate it on the bottom left of the tailgate? Thanks

 

When you added the 4x4 badge did you just eyeball it or did you find the measurements for where it’s supposed to be on the tailgate?
I’m a little OCD so I want to make sure I put it in the right spot.

 

No sure if anyone has posted this thus far but Runnin 4 Tacos just released this for the tundra. We have these on the 4 runner. Highly recommend saving the headache and slap these on if you’re looking to black out the emblems

I measured and used masking tape to mark where to apply it. Just needs to be parallel to the tailgate. Distance from the edge is personal preference.

 

Thanks. I think my ocd got the best of me.
Looks like I’ll just make sure the bottom of lines up with the bottom of the TUNDRA insert and measure the same distance from the edge as the “A” is on the other side.

Update:
4x4 is on now and looks pretty level with the TUNDRA on the tailgate.

 

Did you use a heat gun or hairdryer to remove the chrome emblems on the 2 sides?
I’m nervous with a heat gun too close to the factory paint. Fishing line or plastic pry tools?
How clean did you get the area of old glue before reattaching the black emblems?

Also it’s going to be only 40 degrees this weekend, should I even bother attempting this now or just wait till warm temps in the spring? No luck with borrowing a heated garage unfortunately.

 

I used a heat gun, but you can use a hair dryer as well. It doesn't take too much heat.

 

Finally finished removing the chrome emblems and replacing with the OEM Black ones. Removed using heat gun on low and fishing line method, followed with rolling the remaining glue off with my fingers (while warm) and then finishing with goo gone and a final clean of rubbing alcohol before reapplying the new badges.
I’m happy with the result and I like the look better than the overlays.
I decided to just remove the SR5 badge for now, I might replace it with a black one off ebay, or maybe a black TRD badge or I might just leave it off, I kind of like it now with nothing there.
Also got my new Lomax cover installed.
Now if I can just find a way to replace my chrome tube steps, front grill surround and front bumper caps without my wife noticing I'll be done with all the chrome!
