I kept a 3 ton floor jack in my old Tahoe as I tow a trailer and boat fairly often and didn't want to deal with using the OEM jack if something were to happen.

With my 2019 Tundra DC I have the underseat rear storage and want to throw a bottle jack in there. My question is how much lift do I need to get the front and rear tires off the ground in an event of a flat? Is it safe to lift under the rear diff? Not worried about the boat or trailer as the axles sit low to the ground. Does anyone carry a bottle jack, if so what kind?

Harbor freight sells a 4 ton for under $20 that has a 15in max height and weighs 7lbs

Northern tool sells a 8 ton for under $30 that will reach 17in and weights 14lbs.

If I can get by with the 4 ton's height I'd prefer to do so.

Don’t look just at max height, look at total amount of lift. A block of wood can increase max height, but can’t do anything to increase the amount of lift a jack provides.

4 tons is plenty of lift. I thought about throwing in a 4x4x12 piece of wood to go along with the jack for underseat storage.

Look closely at any you buy, the cheaper ones have a tendency to leak fluid.

The "lift" @DividedSky is talking about is the jack travel from fully collapsed to fully extended. For most bottle jacks, that may be 4+". Bottle jacks often have a threaded ram that can be height adjusted, but that will provide no help with the overall lift or jack travel.

In some cases, too much bottle jack height can be a disadvantage. For example, the jack probably needs to be short enough to get under LCA, steering knuckle, or other suspension components. From that perspective, the low profile of a floor jack is a definite advantage over a bottle jack. If the jack is placed safely under the suspension, the travel of the jack goes completely into getting the wheel off the ground. A bottle jack short enough to get under the suspension will work. If any jack is placed under the frame, then most of the jack travel will be used simply stretching out the suspension before the wheel is lifted. Depending on the vehicle, and the jack, a bottle jack placed on the frame may not have enough lift or travel to get the wheel off the ground,.

Safety 1st or 3rd? Might wanna consider a jack stand or two also...perhaps already did....

Overkill, yes but I understand having a quality tool when you need one. Not all will need something of this level (myself 95% of the time) but if it saves your ass one time it is worth every penny. I wouldn’t trust it over a jack stand though.

That is exactly what I went with because after a 1.5" body lift, the OEM bottle jack wouldn't lift high enough anymore, besides it's obvious lack of safety in any situation other than level concrete.

Forgot to add, then I place a 2x that is wider and longer for added stability and height range....

    Thanks for posting.

I have the 4 ton bottle jack from harbor freight under my seat and I keep a 6x6 about 10" long in the bed all the time too. haven't had to use it yet though, I do like the bottle jack / jack stand combo thing though.

Got this a couple of years ago. Used it to lift my TT but haven’t had to lift the truck yet. Like the wide base and locking jack stand. F8C1711F-848E-4C49-9631-D49A09C5B2FE.jpg

That's the one that I posted LOL. I'm thinking about getting one myself. They seem to be liked by others.
