Oil leak! Need some advice please.

2/4/20 UPDATE! = Valve covers/gaskets. Bolts tightened and keeping an eye out.



Hey guys and gals. Me and my buddy were looking under his truck yesterday. I told him let’s take the skid plate off so we inspect some shit from underneath. the skid plate had some oil on it So we’re looking around with a flashlight and noticed a leak that looks like it’s coming from the base of the dip stick tube and traveling around part of the oil pan. Here are some pics I took of the area in question. His truck is a 2006 4.7 2wd (112,000). We plan on taking it to a shop for diagnosis. I appreciate any advice y’all have.

 

Oil overflowing from upper dipstick entry hole?

Is that whats happening?

 

Damn! Could be, how or why would that be happening?

 

You can get a replacement o ring for the dip stick tube. But it's been years since I decades soccer I bought one. They might just sell you whole think.

Also it might be coming from a higher source. Valve cover gasket do harden overtime sometime even cracks. Tighten the valve cover bolts and see.

Does he drain his oil through dip stick tube? I do! I have a tool for that.

 

Clean all of the oil off, drive a bit, then reinspect to find the source.

 

Not sure as I’m not there in person. Picture is incomplete. Feel around the valve cover gasket seams. Might be leaking. Take a 10mm socket and tighten/check all of the vcg bolts tightness.

112k miles might be time.

 

He has his oil changed somewhere

 

I was brain storming yesterday and I mentioned valve cover gaskets too. It would be a relief if they just need the old 2 grunts and fart

 

Just did some service on a vehicle (which was serviced by others monkey lubes prior) that was spec’d at 4.2 quarts engine oil. I drained out 5.5 quarts!

I think back at all the stupid work done on my truck by other (professionals) and scratch my head.

 

Sucking the oil from the dip stick tube is starting to be more common now in shops. So I would not be surprised that there's some spillover while pulling the tubes out. It happen to me a few times. I usually have a rag ready. But sometimes I don't.

Constant drip could only be valve cover gasket.

 

Yeah. The drip on the A/C compressor suggests a leak at the front vc corner.

Could be the oil monkeys were messy during their service, too.

 

Y'all sure? When my VCs were leaking it went straight onto the exh manifolds.

 

I am not sure of anything about this thread. Need eyeballs on.

Thank you to the guys that posted here. My friend ended up needing an alternator. It was starting to make a whirring sound and finally took a dump. The mechanics we took it to installed a higher amp unit. The oil leak was as some of you suspected... The valve covers! The shop tightened the bolts down and said keep your eyes peeled. Thanks again for the reply’s.
