Love finding stuff AFTER you buy, LOL...

So, after replacing front brakes on the new-to-me 1st-Gen:



... it was probably prudent to look at the rear, right? Hmm... found some drippings on the inside of the rim ... Pulled the drum off .... and ... Dammit.



Sure enough, axle seal is gone and gunk everywhere.

I figured out why the axle seal is gone ... Diff breather is fubar - clogged beyond any redemption. (No relocation kit on this one ... YET.)

I've ordered the two parts I need from the dealer so I can relocate the diff breather (great write-ups on here, BTW!) and grabbed some 5/16" fuel line and clamps from Princess Auto (kind-of like a Canadian version of Harbor Freight for those that don't know) ... I'll do that work on Monday when it's supposedly going to be above freezing for once.

So a few more hours of labour for me. Oh well. There's always SOMETHING, right?

 

Gah... mine is leaking on the driver side as well and looks pretty much just like yours.

It’s not dripping anywhere and when I serviced the rear diff, it was full. I’ll tackle it in the spring/summer.

 

Just a suggestion to buy new shoes for install as those look soaked beyond a simple cleaning.

And screw JUST new shoes ... I was so mad that in addition to the axle seal, last night I went on line and bought the entire Power Stop rear drum brake kit and new cylinders too. As long as I'm in there I'm replacing everything with new. Lets go with the 'buy once cry once' idea, I guess.

As cheap as parts are for these trucks, you’d be stupid not to do it this way.

 

Nice. I was notified both my rear seals blew about 5 years ago. The yearly inspection sticker guy popped me about 3 years ago. Didn’t realize a faulty stuck breather was the cause of this issue until learning on this site.

Like you, I’ll be replacing my shoes soon. Thinking about doing the cylinders as they are originals and heard its best to replace them with new shoes. I’ll check this PowerStop place and see what to buy.
