The thermostat will control the fluid going to the cooler. If the atf is not 190-200 degrees the thermostat won't open.

The warmer will warm the atf until it it reaches that point, then the warmer gets cut off.

Double clamped? Different than the warmer clamps.
So did the spacer removal and thermostat addition go well, any difficulties?

Put the double just in case. It is almost impossible to put the clamps on when the cooler is installed so you have to clamp the hose while the cooler is dangling then install.

I have to ask, did you use trans cooler hose and not fuel line hose?

Impossible? You mean where you double clamped the thermostat or was it the cooler up front that was difficult to clamp?

It's a tight space. I was not able to get the hose on the barbs while it was installed.

LOL! Completely off topic and random, but I started cracking up when I read this. For 30 years I thought “nip it in the butt” as well. Never thought twice about it .
One day I googled it, and found out the correct terminology is “nip it in the bud”. As in cutting off the growth of a plant - or stopping something.
Just thought I’d mention it. LMAO!

AN and JIC are NOT the same (.5* difference in taper) but are interchangeable.

Just for people searching in the future.

They are 10 AN fittings with O-Ring. I know because that's what I have installed.

How much of the cooler does the mounting bracket cover? Hard too tell from yesterdays pics.

    I wasn't disputing that, you're correct, that's what they are. I didn't say they weren't.

I actually quoted the wrong guy, he said AN and JIC are the same. While they do interchange, they are not the same.

    this is ODD...
just stumbled on this thread and it's kinda hard to believe that I don't have a transmission cooler...

the REASON I find it hard is my 'purchase sticker' from the truck the day i bought it says...
So, does my 2019 SR5 with Tow Package have a trans cooler or not??

Looking through this thread, and seeing pictures, and checking my truck... I have the round body with two hoses going to the "Trans cooler" on the Pas Side of trans, but not the "Thermostat Unit"... that goes between trans and cooler...

so I def have a trans cooler... but how does it work? what is being sent into the the trans cooler? is that water? or is trans fluid being sent out?

Just try'n to learn something new...

    Gotcha. I didn't
If you have a 2019+ you don't have a cooler, just a warmer.

The cooler your looking at uses antifreeze from the engine to cool the oil in the transmission. If the engine temp runs at a stead 200F then when the transmission is colder the temp is brought up to a warmer temp. When the transmission is running warmer in the summer, say 220F, the excess heat is dumped into the engine cooling system. Liquid to liquid heat exchangers are more efficient than air to liquid. Some here are worried that the temps on the 2019 and 2020 may run too warm when towing and cause reliability issues.

And others worry that over time, with this design, the transmission fluid can mix with the antifreeze creating the “strawberry milkshake of death”... which is another way of taking out the transmission.

I leased my 2019 for 2 years / 24K so I’m in this just out of curiosity... I’m sure it’ll be fine in the short term regardless of increased temps... and I do tow a lot with it... so it’ll make a good test mule. I also have a 2017... so this summer I plan to do some back to back testing just for fun.

Well nothing has really changed as far as this milkshake thing cause the warmer has been cycling coolant on these trucks down there since at least 07.

so it is a cooler, they just moved the 'radiator' coil (from the bottom tank) next to the trans... at least it's not running water into the trans itself, it's outside the trans, and the fluid doesn't have to go as far.

I tow a 20ft 4k lbs camper trailer, it'll be interesting to see once I get a monitor for that (probably ultra gauge)... wish the built in dash could do that.

That's the million dollar question. Does the 2019-20 need an additional cooler? Some members had reported higher trans temps than the previous years so the question that's debated is what is an acceptable transmission temp and will running the transmission warmer than previous years cause a reliability problem.

To monitor you trans temps the cheapest way is to use the Torque or Fusion apps with an obd2 bluetooth adapter. Total cost is can be as low as $20 depending on what you buy.

What about the big three do any of their trucks use a similar cooling setup or do they all still use external coolers? Of course we all know their trannys can't compete with the Aisin.

Doesn't Ram use an Aisin transmission in their heavy duty diesels?

This is what GM's website says their trucks have.
