Tensioner Pulley

Hi there!

Is there any write up on replacing a tensioner pulley and serpentine belt on a 2008 Tundra 4x4 5.7 (and where you recommend to get those two parts either OEM, etc.)? Original on 149,000 miles and time to replace!

 

I believe there are videos on YouTube for the 5.7. Did both of these over the summer chasing a squeak. If you've done a belt and pulley change on anything in the past, you can handle the 5.7

Belt is super easy. Do it from underneath. Watch your arms as the are a few pointy spots you'll be rubbing.

OEM tensioner and pulley is Dayco.
I used a Bando belt on mines out of habit.

 

There a write up in the below link. Looks like he replaced his belt but the rest of the work is pretty straight forward. Just make sure to take your time and draw a picture of the way the belt goes back on. I recently did this and used the Daco...

Much appreciated. What is the difference between the automatic belt tensioner and idler/tensioner pulley in the image? I thought I would just need the belt and belt tensioner.

 

I’ve done a belt and alternator on an 06 Pilot but never a pulley on any vehicle (that is the part I’m more worried about).

It's just confusing wording for the parts. The pulley on the tensioner itself can be replaced, but most folks just swap the whole unit if doing the work as the tensioner can go slack over time. I only swapped the tensioner's pulley itself on mine. Was like $10

The idler pulley just free spins. No accessory is powered by it. If you look at the belt diagram you'll see all the accessory locations and the idler location.

 

There are two pullies on the 5.7 that are not tied to accessories (Fan, Power Steering, AC, Alternator, et..) The tensioner keeps tension on the belt which is just right and down from the power steering pump (passenger side) That’s the tricky one to get at but releases pressure on the belt to snake it out from around the front. The idler is the one that is topside on the drivers side. It’s just that... used to position the belt in order to wrap around on the drivers side.

I replaced both just because I was getting the morning (cold temp) squeak so I’m not sure which one needed replacing but with the kit it’s just easier to do both. Once you undo the skid plate and take a look it will make more sense.

I’m doing the job this weekend. Do any of you know what size tools I’ll need? Is it a 14mm for the tensioner and pulley and a 5 hex to keep the belt slacked and a 6 hex for the tensioner unbolting? Just want to make sure I have everyone before I start.

Do the bolts also need to be torqued a certain number for the bolts? Also, is a deep offset box wrench necessary? I don’t plan on removing the fan.

 

Yes you’re correct about not needing the deep offset.

I did my tundra a few weeks ago.

10/12mm for skid pan
14mm for tensioner
6mm for tensioner bolt hole
I used a drywall screw to keep the tensioner held back in the hole,but I’m sure anything that fits in the hole will work

There’s also one bolt that is on the corner of the tensioner pulley that’s 12/14mm i can’t recall which

If you’re replacing the idler pulley up top,it’s a 12/14mm i can’t remember which

 

No torque specs needed for the bolts? Just tighten well but not over tighten?

Np, the googles works all the time and fsm can be found in similar method. I haven't searched for it in awhile but I'm confident you can find it.

 

Old thread revival incoming! Just did belt, idler and tensioner. Took me about 1.5 hours. Took my time, biggest problem was getting the hooks back in place for the skid plate. Take care out there!
