Did you hear, or feel this when it happened?

The high RPM loving 5.7L in my '07 is nearing 290K, I drive it
with a heavy & spastic right foot and it keeps asking for more.

I’m a Tundra guy now. But my Avalanche w/ the 5300 Vortec was at 224,000 miles when I traded it in. There were plenty of OTHER issues with it, but engine failure wasn’t one of them. That 5.3 was solid.

I had a 5.7 bearing failure at 96K. Unexplained. Always dealer maintained and always ontime. Synthetic since birth.
Toyota assisted with the replacement due to having made a dozen purchases over the years... Below are bearings that failied - Center main and related rods looked starved for oil. This is the factory fresh 2010 block that replaced the failed 2008.....It can happen....

We bought our 2007 DC with 244,000 on the odometer, it was well taken care of and since owning it everything under the hood is dry, no oil or coolant leaks whatsoever, runs like it just came off the showroom floor. We're mostly Toyota, had a 91 Toyota pickup which we gave to our son, we have an 06' Sienna and an old standby 88' tintop Suzuki Samurai that I dropped a 1.6 engine into, they also do well in getting over 100,000 miles on them, which is good for "old tech" stuff.

276,000 plus miles on my 2009 Chevy Silverado LT 4x4, 5.3, and still running great, the day (this August) when I traded it for my 2019 Tundra Limited 4x4, 5.7. My 1999 Ford F-150 Lariat 4x4, 5.4 had 260,000 plus miles on it the day I traded it for the Silverado and was still running well. Basic maintenance on both was it. Did my first oil change at 4800 miles a couple of weeks ago on my Tundra. Call me old school, but full synthetic oil changes every 5000 miles or so is the way my F-150 and Silverado kept going. It worked for them and I am counting on it working for my 2019 Tundra above and beyond...
Sorry about what happened above to “Toyota Lover2”...frustrating to say the least...

A couple years ago, my son's '07 5.7 dropped a valve at 230K or so. But he had overheated it once on the freeway. So that might have been a contributing factor. He bought a new Silverado V-6, and absolutely hates it. Wants to get back into a Tundra in the worst way!

Yes there is an issue with the valve springs breaking on the 5.7. Also lexus had a recall on their valve springs a while ago.

My tundra just dropped a valve in the #1 cylinder and I'm sure it's going to head a new engine. Plan on pulling the head and assessing the damage. The inspection cam picture shows a gnarly mess.

Dropped valves and $10K worth of engine failures sure doesn’t sound good. Another post mentioned something about being starved for oil. There’s another thread where folks noticed their engine oil level was low when re-checking after changing the oil. I know it’s a long-shot, but I’m wondering if there might be a connection?

Just was quoted $7k for a used 100k mile motor install. We were on vacation and returning home. Cruise was set at 75 and pulling a small single axle popup. Sounded like a tire separated and then a sudden loss of power. Then while pulling over it shut down and died. Truck has 195 k on it and I just bought it 6 months ago. Paid cash for it so not making payments. Cant replace the truck for the cost of the swap so at the moment exploring some options.

Look on Car-part.com and see what the engines are going for in your area.

    Man. Hate to hear that

got my fingers crossed. Have 245k on mine. I have looked at used motors before just to see and seen a bunch at around 3500-4500. I know it’s a pretty labor intensive swap

let us know what you end up doing

It's a 13 hour swap by the book plus fluids and taxes puts it at about 1600 for the install. Show me somewhere with a warranty and a 5500 short block. Best I found was 7.

Few questions about the short block option,
how much more labor to swap all the parts over? In case above he has 200k on his truck. Is he better off getting a complete motor with 60-80k miles on it vs putting a bunch of parts with 200k miles on a new block?

What caused the valve to drop on case above and how badly damaged is the head? Is it likely happen with another valve and psooibly ruin New motor if old heads are re-used on a short block?

Pulled the drivers side valve cover off and found the broken spring bent valve and found the roller rocker. Still searching for the spring cap and locks....
Good news is my mechanic says that a used head and new piston wont be near the same cost...

Curious as to what would be the cause on that. If it were not so expensive I would send it to a lab to be analyzed
