I'm looking to buy my first Tundra (upgrade from a 13 Tacoma) and found one that's the right price and options but it might have the seal leaking issue. It has 88,000 miles and looks like its leaked some but doesn't appear to be major. Would it get worse over time? Would you guys still consider purchasing this truck or move on to a different one? From what I've read I'm getting the feeling that its not if but when the leaks will start, is that true?

They can leak no matter what age or miles if you read back enough you will see brand new ones and old ones. Keep in mind it should be fixed if it’s leaking. It can be a great truck but that is a major fix in the thousands so if they take that off the price go for it.

Its a Minor leak, no danger, of fire even. Look deeper into the vehicle, this isn't why not to buy it. And it doesn't need to be repaired unless it really bothers you.

Luck and enjoy those Toyotas. : ^ )))

Many have reported issues sub 30,000 miles. Unfortunate.

I see picture after picture, case after case of this issue and think to myself... what corners is Toyota going to cut on the next Tundra? This is such an easy fix... and a clear defect happening right at the factory... yet Toyota doesn’t bother to fix it. I don’t get it. Then I read about the transmission cooler delete on the 2019/2020s and really hope that Toyota isn’t going the way of Honda/Acura and cashing in on their hard earned reputation for quality and durability by charging top dollar for very average cars until consumers catch on....

I would have thought they learned their lesson with the runaway Camrys.

I work for Toyota and i am well aware of the recall.
As for a runaway camry caused by a person stacking multiple floor mats is two different things.
The recall was implemented to put safeguards in so that if the accelerator was depressed and stuck open while applying brake the throttle would default to an idle.
The other part was to trim the pedal so to not interfere with a bonehead getting the floormat pushed under it.

There was no proven vehicle unintended acceleration. All was alleged.

This recall was spotlighted so much at a time when our government was bailing out US auto manufacturers.
But when GMs ignitions were shutting off causing crashes and deaths, that was quieted up quickly.

My 2011 has 148k on it, never had an issue. I thought I had a rear main leak starting but while doing my brakes today noticed both sides have the cam leak, hopefully it’s collecting at bottom the of bellhousing and I don’t have the rear main as well but we’ll see.

So I noticed it has the grey rtv, I bought the truck as certified used in 2013 with 45k on it or so. Wasn’t this known well before 2013? So much for the we update everything certified bs.. of course it waited until my extended warranty ran out to start leaking but still..

I don’t think it was a recall. I’m a faithful Toyota guy I guess I was just hoping for good faith on they’re part. But that said it made it to 148k without costing me a
Dollar so I really can’t complain too much.

A known issue like this shouldn’t cost you a dollar regardless of miles. One issue Toyota really has dropped the ball on.

Both cam towers have been seeping for months. Enough now to smell oil after a short drive. Noticed some oil on the garage floor near the rear diff not long ago. Sure enough its seeping too. Went away for a few weeks and the truck barely started when I returned. Looks like the battery is failing too. Its a 2018 with just under 8k miles. Thanks a lot, Toyota...WTF

I love/hate this forum, wifey alerted me to a burning smell in a cabin of 2016 - 1794 edition. Just passed the 50K mark on my truck a day or so ago, after a little digging with the help of the this forum, I discovered a cam tower leak on my Tundra. Fair to say I am beyond furious, called TC, opened a case to have every detail documented, filed a complaint with NHTSA and will not stop there. Went to a dealer, took 10 seconds for the dealer to confirm the leak. Dealer told me they get approximately 1 per year, just so it happens they are working on one currently, I don’t think I buy the story.
Keep my fingers crossed, 2016 with 50 K, expecting it to be covered by warranty without a “peep” from Toyota. Unbelievable!!!!!!!!
I am against the “open heart surgery” but when noxious fumes enter the cabin and make my family sick it is a different story. I guess I am member of the cam leak as of now.

Good luck I sent them an email last week about mine and no response. I changed my diff and t case oils today and it’s looking like I do have a rear main leak starting too. What a mess that’s going to be to fix a couple seals.

While i have seen a few leak, we service approximately 12 tundras per day on average. With all sorts of high mileage. We havent seen one leak in 2 years.
It is not as common as you think.
And i believe(just a theory) that its more common in colder areas where there is such a temp swing. Different surfaces contract and swell with temperature.

I think its more common then people think, I live in a warmer climate and had it and neighbor down the street also has it. Both on passenger side.
This is what pushed me to have mine done, I only made it to 21k when I discovered the leak. But the fumes in the cab I couldn't deal with.

So I checked my 2017 TRD Pro and it looked to have a small leak on the passenger side. I took it to my local dealership and they confirmed that it's leaking a little oil, but not enough to constitute having it changed under warranty. I'm currently at 55,900 miles, so close to the end of warranty. Wasn't happy they wouldn't cover it. I was told it would have to be dripping oil for them to replace the seal.
Anyone else have this issue when dealing with their dealership? Should I take it to another dealership?

    I would try another dealership.

My dealership actually brought it up when I was getting my oil changed. Only one side was leaking but I was able to talk to the service manager into doing both sides under warranty. My truck had very low miles, maybe 8,000 or less.

My 2013 Tundra CM with 60k has a very slow leak on the passenger side. Every 20k I just wipe it off and I am good to go another 20k. No smell in the cab yet, thank goodness. Driver side is dry as a bone.

Put some old oil in a squirt bottle and give it a few pumps along the seal area then bring it to another dealer in 2 thousand miles. I would try anything to get it covered
