Dash Squeak

Based on comments from the other thread there are at least 3 of us dealing with this. It's been driving me nuts since I bought the truck 4 years ago.

When I had the radio out last year I both looked back behind the dash and felt. I couldn't determine where the noise is coming from. I even tried shoving stuff in between the dash and windshield.


Has anyone successful fixed this problem? It makes every bump in the road that much more annoying.

Some guys have stuffed rubber strips or foam matting back there between dash and windshield. Mine hasn't squeaked so I haven't looked into it.

 

That would drive me nuts as well. If it were mine i would use some silicone spray with the small tube attached and give it a spray between the dash and windshield.

 

So this was a known issue from the old Tundra forums? I just assumed I was unlukcy.

Since I just got a box of Noico I may try to save a few tiny strips to stick there, or see what else I have laying around.

 

I think mine does this every once in a while, but my delrin lower control arm bushings just started squeaking to I'm starting to tune stuff out.

 

I’ve got more squeaks in my 17 Tundra than my 1998 4Runner. Really crappy.

Exactly my noise, gonna play around with Noico and see if I can figure it out over the next couple days.

 

My 2001 Tundra had the same noise many years ago and I fixed it my doing the following... Buy some 1/2" round closed-cell foam backer rod, cut it to size to fit the entire length of the dash, and shove it between the dash and the windshield. Don't push it all the way in, but just enough so you can see half the backer rod. Worked for me for years...

Yup, pretty common. The better TD threads on the topic are hard to find but the remedy like @DSTundra describes is a version of what seems to work.

 

Thats the sound my bed makes which is a happy sound when its occurring.

Hand Model Solution: Stuff some cloth rags/strips along the dash and drive it to see if that ‘fixes’ it before doing the foam backer rod stuffing. If successful, then do foam. Also, remove instrument cluster/bezel and glove box and apply sticky sound tape up under dash bottom side and bridge a gap between plastic and firewall as best as possible.

 

Yeah, when TundraNation, TundraTalk and TS went to Forum software by XenForo, they created a major Fubar. In fact it's the main reason I found this great site
and couldn't be happier.
What I have found is that if you run across a thread at one of those XenForo forums and a link takes you to a Ooops page, you can use the needed words from that link and place it in their Search box. It should then give you a thread link with those exact words. I realize your link works but take the link you posted just as an example, place the words in bold in their search engine, it should be the first selection found.

Tundra Solutions was great in its prime, Tundrunk and Remmy were HUGE in helping with my ‘03 build. Wonder if they’re here in this forum?

Really glad this forum is active, it’s a small reason why I was comfortable getting back into a first gen.

 

I pushed on my dash in those areas in the video and they are super firm. Zero to extremely minimal play depending on where. I’d consider some type of jack leg support bracket inside there as a fix if possible.

 

On my old Corolla, the fix was some Vasoline in the joints for where the dash was clipped together or there was a seam. A light application, wipe off excess and it was good to go.

I'm going to try the towel/foam between windshield and window to see if I can fix it on my 2019 Tundra. It definitely happens more when it's -20 then when it's +20. It seems to happen on my way to work and I've parked outside all night, but not on my way home after I've parked in a +20 indoor, heated parkade for 8hrs.

Autocorrected and updated my post. Don't want anyone pouring gasoline in their Tundras based on my advise.

 

I'll try to run to Lowe's in the morning and grab the backer rod and will report back. It'll be late as I'm also hooking up a reverse camera / mirror tomorrow morning as well.

From the pic this could be the same gray as my dash...

 

Grab all sizes just in case as the diameter stuffing can be tricky. Not big enough and it falls in. A little too big is better. Hahaha. Return what is not used.

I dont think Remmy is around, I haven't seen him if he is. I think he became a mod on TS, I know he got a 2nd gen.

I lurked around a lot on TS about 5-6 years ago when I first got this truck. I remember seeing that name and truck on there and kinda wondered if you might be him. I think I posted on there about replacing the sub under my back seat and starting a resto. Sorry, just rambling.

And for nostalgias sake, here was my last post on TS - even 5.5 years ago I knew I’d be back in a DC...

 

So after looking at my dash, I'm wondering how this will work. The part of the dash that touches the windshield is very thin, it seems like this material will just fall down into the abyss. I'm not seeing how the dash will be able to pinch it against the windshield. Certainly worth trying though.

Also, Darkness posted a link earlier and according to that guy, the squeak was coming from inside the dash where the vent touches the dash. I'll be checking that as well. We may have to try both.

Going to work on the rear camera install now. If it goes quick I'll head over to Lowe's and work on the dash; more to come.

 

Curious about that as well. The Alpine I was about to order doesn't have the reverse wire on the back. So I'm not clear how you tap into that. Let me know how that goes for you.
