LBJ Part Number

Maybe the original cotter pin and castle nut?

 

Just figure to be safe than sorry with those just in case. What have you heard people recommend? Not sure myself.

 

If the original castle nuts are the same thread, use them. Always better to use new cotter pins, but not necessary. They can be hammered out straight. If not, just go to a local parts place, or Toyota, and get new cotter pins.

You should always use new cotter pins and castle nuts. They are so cheap. Can you reuse the old? Sure can, but not recco’d. These parts are for 2002. Double check for your year.

 

Castle nuts are always reused, you do however always replace the cotter pins.

 

I just replaced lower ball joints, I didn’t know about a “kit” but the new oem ball joints came with new castle nuts and cotter pins.

 

I went to have my upper and lower ball joints installed at a local shop and they said that the lowers were not the correct part. I have a 2000 2WD and they said I had bought the LBJ’s for a 4WD. Is there a difference between 2WD and 4WD LBJ’s? I had ordered the kit and provided my VIN to make sure figment was correct. Just making sure.

Well, that kit that was used for he recall was what was used on my 2006...it looks like the part numbers for 2006 and 2000 are different for the individual parts...we discussed the possibility of that earlier in the thread...

For what it's worth, your two LBJs are less than the kit for both newer ones, so that's good...but I see no mention of a difference between 2wd and 4wd...I assume your shop can just see the difference and is making an assumption that it's for the wrong drive, but it really the wrong year. Looks like you have to return the LBJs and get the right ones...bummer.

 

Thanks! Yeah I had contacted Roman and got things squared away. Guess there was a difference just in the years and not whether it was 2WD or 4WD. Got the parts ordered and the old ones being returned soon.
I think you’re right with what the shop was assuming the different drives being the reason but they still put on the UBJ’s and only cost me $70 for installation!! Probably just going to install the lowers myself since those don’t need to be pressed in which is nice.

Did the kit come with the bolts? I'm ordering my kit now, not sure if I need to order new bolts or just the two castle nuts and two cotter pins?

I didn’t order the kit, but the 4bolts per side were not included when I bought my sets. #9010512316 x 8

 

Thank you! Looks like I'll wait for the kit to come in and then order the 8 bolts, 2 nuts and 2 pins if they aren't in there. Hope this helps someone else down the road.

 

Not needed. Just new cotter pins. Kit doesn’t come with any of the above mentioned items.

 

While it's true the 8 bolts are technically not needed (you can reuse the ones there) it's only $12 in bolts from Toyota, so if the Toy mechanic says get em, it's seems worth it to me...

 

In the world of Tacoma’s the lbj bolts are known to sheer after reuse on lifted trucks. It’s cheap insurance to me. I know the 05-06 tundras use larger bolts though, but for the price it sure beats possibly losing a wheel.

Agreed on the cheap insurance, just saying that they aren't a requirement.

 

Oh by no means they are. Him having a newer tundra I’d say even less so.
But at work I do quote them with the joints just for piece of mind
