I have a 2020 CM Limited and noticed the key for the tailgate will only go in one way. Anyone else finding that out?

What? How many ways is a key supposed to go in?

yeah I think explained that wrong, the key is only cut on one side the other is smooth so when I insert the key it will only go in the lock if the smooth side is on the left. You turn it upside down and it will not even go in much less lock the tailgate. I have a F350 with a key ignition and I can flip the key any way no problem

Your limited didn’t come with power tailgate lock?

I wish but no, I was torn between the Limited and the Platinum. I even considered building a truck exactly how I wanted it but Toyota would not mix in options. For example getting the TRD off road package on the Platinum would have given me the perfect truck, without having to do all the aftermarket stuff. I have had 2 Corvettes and went mod crazy with them. Found out quick that mods get looked down on when it comes time to sell. OEM right from the dealer seems to have the best resale value. We all love our mods but the next person buying it maybe not so much.

I noticed the same thing. I had a 2019 and it was the same. I just installed the OEM Toyota power tail gate lock today. An upgrade that is totally worth the time, effort and expense, in my opinion. Toyota should have made it standard on our trucks.

I just bought a 2020 SR5 TSS off road and it came with a powered tailgate lock. Also had the bed lights too. I had a '19 Tundra I traded. I had added the pop n lock to it and it was one of the best things I could have done. 20191215_183739.jpg 20191215_183728.jpg

My guess is that those were dealer installed.

If it was I'm very happy about that. I didn't see that option on the moroney label.

So, my new 2020 Limited is the same way. I have no problem with it that way.
Here is my additional question on the lock. I was told (yea I know) that the truck had the power tailgate lock. I didn’t test at dealership (again, I know), how would I know if I have the power lock and it isn’t working?

There is no power tail gate lock from the factory. If it did have it installed, it would be a dealer installed option. If it has the Toyota power lock, then when you open the tailgate, you should see TWO black wire protectors that exit the tail gate and go under the bed. If there is only one, that's for the rear view camera and your truck does not have the power tailgate lock installed. If there are two, then it should, and there may be something that isn't connected properly. You can also remove the tailgate access cover on the inside of the tailgate and easily see whether or not you have the power lock installed.

Yea, no tailgate lock on that one...sorry man. It's a relatively easy install, if you're so inclined, and you'll love it once you have it.

Long story short, I am just outside Houston, TX. The dealership did not have a “standard bed” for the limited in stock. After arguing there was no “standard bed”, they researched what I was talking about. Low and behold they found one I wanted with the spec’s I wanted in San Antonio TX. They expected me to pay sticker plus $1000 additional charge for bringing it to Houston. After finally going trough the , I walkout, they come after me crap, we agree on a price. I signed intent to purchase and put $500 down. Couple days later get a call vehicle in. I go down, like what I see. Let’s get this done. Well.....the salesman gives me a new agreement to purchase and priced higher. Says I need to sign and pay the difference because of unknown at other dealer installed options. Tint and a door guard. $500 my part. I’m like “no” your problem, I didn’t ask for or want those things, here is the previous agreement ! They say they can’t /will not sell for the price and give some lame excuses. I told salesman fine, give me my deposit back I go else where. Salesman and manager than say “ deposit is non-refundable”. I say it is ? But that is for the agreed price signed already, you are changing deal, not me. Another 30-45 minutes of me now raising my voice about being ripped off, they gave me the vehicle at the agreed price.
I hate salesman! The worse part is this was the 3rd vehicle I have purchased from this dealership.

Damn, that sucks! I hate dealing with stealerships as well...I've had many bad experiences, but luckily more good ones than bad. I purchased both a 2019 and a 2020 last August. The experience with the 2019 was soured because of one of the sales managers. I walked out like you did, but was called back after they agreed to my price. The experience on the 2020 was at a different dealership and couldn't have been better.

Hopefully your experience with the truck will make you forget the dealership experience, and next time you're in the market, you can go elsewhere.

    Congrats on the new truck!

All the ‘20 owners know there’s a key in the remote fob right?

If I'm not mistaken, that key only locks / unlocks the glove box, right? It doesn't lock the rear tail gate.

if you don't live too far, I would go back and politely ask the salesman to show you how to operate the tailgate lock he told you about. But given your bad experience, he might deny telling you about it. Does it show as an installed option on your sticker? might be worth a shot.

That key Fob in my old Tacoma works on the drivers door, glovebox and tailgate.

It only goes in one way as well.

To lock your tailgate, you need a physical key aside from the key fob. Now you must carry them both to lock/unlock tailgate? That's what I'm figuring at this point. Does anybody see it differently?

I guess you can leave your tailgate key in the truck....

Edit: never mind, I just saw the post about a physical key in the fob. :)
