What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

My worthless 2 cents. We had a 2017 Sequoia before switching into a 2017 GX. GX will do, barely, but with three, it’s going to be tight, the middle seat isn’t really a seat as much as it is a spacer in between the two seats. You can always use the third row for the toddler, but the trunk will be non existent and we carry a stroller and diaper bags.

I hate the Sequoia bc it looks old and outdated, essentially the same look as a 2007 but for the price of a 2020 SUV at $50K and that drove me nuts. But man...the interior space was incredible, coupled with the reliability and we still loved it despite its ugly exterior haha We honestly miss the Sequoia even though the GX is so nice and such an upgrade exterior and interior features wise, the space for a family is priceless.

Again, just my two cents. Space and functionality is king at the point in our lives versus luxury and design. We’re waiting out and hoping for a complete overhaul of the Sequoia for 2021-2022 and then we’ll most likely go that route.

 

There's always the LC and LX

 

Another great point, we got better gas mileage in our Sequoia (18 mpg mixed) and it didn’t require premium fuel. Our GX gets 15-16 MPG and costs $10+ more per fill up.

 

that's actually why I've been leaning towards a Highlander. I was thinking about doing a gx470 to replace my prerunner some day. I've seen decent deals on some higher mileage 470 that could use some love and I really like having a spare vehicle.

All good points. I was just leaning away from a Sequoia because asking for something that big when my wife initially wanted a minivan isn't a path I want to travel. I need to stay in the cute suv territory if I have any chance haha.

 

Trés niños moves you out of said territory. So many good deals on 2000-07 ish Sequoias on Dreggslisss guessing because they aren’t cool?

The 2007 Sequoia model looks sweet and at around $5k-6 versus a similar 2006 DC at $10-15k (crazy) versus $8-10k for the sweet Access Cab Tundras.

Your oldest will need a walkie talkie for communications sitting in the back 3rd seat.

Why is there a lower hash ‘cold’ measurement on this dip stick by Toyota? When ‘cold’ reads higher than the upper hash ‘hot’ when the proper engine level is attained? Baffled.

I love first gen sequoia. Long travel the front and the rear can probably gain travel fast being linked.

 

Congrats on the twins! Mine are a bit older now and out of any kind of car seat, but when I found out I was having twins and already had two kids, the accord just wouldn't work any more. I went car shopping and tried to fit two of the rear facing car seats in anything other than a minivan and it was tough. I had to put my seat up so far that I was crammed into the steering wheel. So I ended up with....an odyssey. Hated that it was a minivan, but the electronic doors were amazing when your arms were both full of kids

If you decide that route, stay away from the pre 2007 odyssey, that transmission will blow up every 75,000 miles.

 

The pan is the lowest part of the system so the fluid drains back into the pan while the truck is off.

 

Yes. This was my assumption, that gravity did its work, as well. With that being the case, why are the cool hashes lower on the dipstick than the hot hashes?

 

Did you check it while running and in neutral?

 

Yes when running. No in N. I checked it per the Toy spec (see above) for A340f transmissions. Says to check in P. Run it through all gears and then put it in P.

When engine is at idling operation temp (guessing) and after being warmed up and driving (guessing temp again), the level reads as stated in other arrow in pic (hot).

 

I'm guessing since it says "rough reference" is that it gives you a level to start without overfilling since it's easier to add more than remove it.

 

No worries on my end with the transmission. Just exercising the logical side of the brain when it comes to this dipstick.

Yesterday, I called Toyota about their ‘drain and fill spec’ for our transmissions just to double check on any potential revisions made on their 2.1 quart recommendation. They stick by original 2.1 quarts.

@empty_lord says at work he drain and fills the A340f all the time at 4-5quarts.

Wonder why there was a rash of transmission problems on these back in the day?

Granted it's been several years since i worked in a shop. But I recall we always checked ATF in neutral while running. Memory is fuzzy as to your question above. I do recall running throw the gears a few times when doing flushes and drain n fills.

 

Depending on the vehicle, I know some of the Mopar transmissions spec to check it in neutral.

 

Decided today was the day given the weather that I would attempt to replace the cigarette lighter illumination bulb. Wow and quadruple wow and I'll add that when this one burns out I will definitely get another gal of patience at Wal Mart because one gal was not near enough. Then agin it may simply stay burned out

I viewed the below video and then deviated where I felt it was better for me. As for the pictures I added, the black holder with bulb was a left over from led change out of Instrument Panel using NEO4's in it's place.
One will either need to get with @Roman if they wish to purchase the original grey socket with bulb. I used a good minature T bulb(don't know size #) similar to the bulb below with leads. In order to remove the bulb from the below grey socket, one has to push the 2 pins out of the socket....pushing the pins from inside of socket towards the outside of socket. The bulb with it's leads and the 2 pins are then free. To replace bulb, feed the leads of the bulb thru the holes where pins came from starting from outside socket toward inside. The bulb will be in rest and the 2 pins can be replaced and be able to slide right by bulb. If one does get to the point of replacing the bulb, most of what I find hard to explain will become self evident. If not, Please feel free to ask....time to have a stiff drink

Here you have to go to a liquor store for the hard stuff. In my semi-dry town you have to go to the county line just outside town for liquor stores.
They just recently started selling malt liquor and wine in stores in my town and liquor at the bars. When I was a kid they didn't even sell beer in town except at the ice houses. haha.

 

Exactly. I’ve tried about 4 ways so far without complete disassembly like you’ve done. Tell me if this is possible using 90° needle nose pliers.

Grab and push off bottom plug. Grab and twist bulb housing off. Remove bulb and insert new T-bulb with base (LED from a batch of extras). Almost like fine surgery.

 

short answer yes for lighter plug, with the upmost care. In fact having worked in electronics 40 yrs, I did not want sparky showing up so I disconnected the battery….but that's just me. As for the illumination bulb, once someone has gotten that socket plus bulb in hand, the info I first shared above should possibly be more clearer. There is no T-bulb with base unless someone is referring to grey socket, shown above, with bulb and green condom.

I'll add very very fine surgery that's almost not worth it unless someone is hard headed like me at my old age

I tried the push method and backed off as the others wire tension stopped the backward push. I swear it looks like Mr. XM’s prior work is preventing me from the method I described. I took off the ashtray sliders frame which gave me more room than my posted picture side view where its still in place.

I think you are correct in the battery disconnect. My pliers were getting close to Zzzzttt!

There lower marks on the dipstick are for engine running, not fully warmed up yet.

With the engine off its going to read high.

 

Went to put in some LEDs in the 3rd brake light, I thought I remember seeing or reading this is common. Hopefully the new lights won’t bake the new housing like that. Oem should be here Monday hopefully, I hope it comes with the black gasket that seals to the cabin

 

Yeah I think everyone's are melted. LEDs should cut down on the heat
