What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

The door ones have holes and adhesive, pretty time consuming to take off. I slid masking tape in all around, then did a few inches of tape as a border with double layer of tape immediately around the strips to protect paint while I sanded them. Then I taped up plastic sheeting all around the area and did prep and paint with bed liner.

 

You could get white bed liner. Looks nasty when dirty but it should clean easy.

One thing worth noting on bed liner, the rough texture will catch on your cleaning gear if you use those lamb skin looking wash mits.

 

I'm skeptical of going white. It's unlikely I could match my paint so then I'd have two shades of white. That's what happened with the plasti-dip. Plus I already repained my fenders black and mirrors too.

Wait a minute! Just who the hell are you? "Paint it white".. Darkness would never say this.

While you are at it you can pop off your bed rails and sand/spray them too. Those pop up pretty easy. If they match your door trim it looks good.

 

Did you just suggest painting something a different color than black?

 

I don't have a photo, but I used carbon fiber look vinyl wrap and covered up the chrome strip. It's holding up great and I like the look. It's a snowy mess outside now so I can't get a picture.

 

I also did this. I used high bonding primer, bedliner spray, primer again and then white.

On my 02 Tundra, I removed the original trim and covered the holes up with this thin trim I found on eBay.

 

Looks good. Any links for the screens? Did you space it out off the handle? I had to move mine away with washers to keep the handle from being visible in the video.

The texture from the bed liner undercoat should offset any slight difference in color once painted over in white. The white finish coat will smooth out the rough fiber catching Darkness alludes. My mitts don’t catch any jags when washing, but a microfiber will when dry.

Bed liner is a nice finish raw. Hides smears and scratches. Will show a powdery rub, but a quick wipe with the raw hand gets rid of it.

Took a close look at my radiator and noticed an odd spacing between the hose and fan shroud.

Is it possible someone put the wrong one in? Access Cab vs Double cab maybe..

 

Is it safe to say that having already replaced all 2002 Interior bulbs (2 doors, 2 map lights, 1 dome, 1 footwell) with new LED bulbs that there is now additional freed capacity to install 4 feet (2 feet per door) of LED flexible strip lights that consume 8.5 watts?

Looking to add some of the said strip lights under the door jamb as down/puddle lights in the 15A Dome fuse circuit. Will ‘T’ off the door wires going to the door panel lights. Activated when all interior bulbs light when door switch opens.

 

I think it would be safe at .708 amps. Sounds like a pretty cool idea.

Why not just use a small spot type led and put them on the bottom of the mirror? Super easy to get into the mirror since you’ve got the door panel off and you wouldn’t have to worry about them staying stuck to the door.

 

I've seen a few people put Sequoyah radiators in our trucks. That may be the case here.

 

Good idea and one I’ve thought through. Reasons why not to:
1) Drilling a hole (not scared just don’t want to drill a hole in my mirror).

2) Round puddle light is a direct spot type light.

3) Cost.

Reasons for LED strip:

1) Flexibility in strip allows light up side jamb and also down on ground.

2) Ease in install. Peel and stick. Not worried about peeling off.

3) Future problems? Remove and done with it. Or, buy a new strip vs finding ‘round puddles lights’.

4) Cheap cost

5) Modular design allows strip lighting the full length of door from side jamb and up the other side jamb if I want it that long. Lighting will be far superior.

 

I tapped the door light and put an eagle eye led through the bottom of the door. Gonna swap it out with something like this.

If you're going for a display - go for a display.

Questions, what is the fail method? If it sheits the bed, does it fail to basic mirror?
Day / night - do they both have it?
I've had several OEM auto-dim mirrors fail. They fail to day, so it works during the day, but are a PIA at night. Blinding.
I'm the exception but will always opt for a basic day/night mirror w/ back up camera display anywhere else.
Ever have setting sun behind you, or sun reflecting off the windscreen of the vehicle behind you? Auto dim won't compensate 4 that.

 

Mounted up this Amp Research bedstep. My open tailgate/bumper are just high enough that it’s hard for me to step onto so I’ve wanted one of these for a long time. I originally thought I wanted the rear under bumper one but found this front bedside one and used it at the side rear corner. I like it and these things are pretty stout. Drilled one hole and used an existing one from the towing receiver. Best $110 I’ve spent.

What about lights under the rocker panel that come on when you unlock or open the doors? That's what I was thinking, but I don't mind your idea either. I guess the way I go depends on how hard it is to tie into that unlock circuit. What about a connector like these. It would require you cut your wire but at least it's more weatherproof than a scotch lock. Throw in some heat shrink butt connectors and some tesa tape and you'll be stylin.

Still need to add reverse camera and some small wires to make it all work 100%

 

That yellow line is my proposed install site for the peel and stick flex strip. The wires I propose to ‘T’ into are the 2 light wires going to the already existing door panel lights (light box connector removed in picture and light box still connected to door panel).

The bottom of the door is slanted about 35° so the light will wash down and back (without blinding) where needed versus a limited mirror installed puddle type. The flexibility will allow the strip to come up and shine into the floor boards as well. Its a KISS design. Just trying to find an off the self local waterproof LED product right now.
