After several months of mostly lurking, on Wednesday night I took delivery of a 2020 MGM 1794. I'm still in the 'honeymoon' period with less than 200 miles so far but I have a question I hope someone has the answer to.

I have the stock (regular) exhaust which seems to be very boomy at some RPMs, including highway speeds where it is steady and fairly annoying. It is not the tires. I believe it is the exhaust because the sound is distinctly coming from the rear of the truck and not the engine compartment. And it varies with engine speed so that sometimes it isn't even there. I wondered it the muffler or exhaust pipe might be making contact with the frame ....

I thought there was a fairly recent post on this subject but I've done searches and can't find any posts about it. So, has anyone else had a boomy exhaust and if so, figured out how to get rid of it? Or might it be something else?

I came to this thread expecting you to be asking for recommendations on a new exhaust. I was all set to recommend DiryDeeds. Though, technically, I would still recommend asking @dirtydeeds because he's an exhaust guru.

Tailpipe resonator will make a Tundra with stock exhaust sound like a Prius. Speaking from experience on a previous Tundra.

The OEM system does have some drone.

That said, give it a little time, because I feel the engine does break in (mechanically and computer “learns”) with some miles and runs smoother, which also smoothes out the exhaust note.

    congrats on the new ride.
Fairly new owner here too. My stock exhaust did have an odd drone type sound. All went away with DD 8” exhaust w/ resonator.

Good replies. I have the single exhaust and not the TRD dual pipe system, so an H pipe connector is not possible. I think I'll take Ed's suggestion and wait a bit for the engine to finish break-in and see if the drone goes away. Thanks for the input.

Is it possible to do the H pipe in the mid section? Even the single exits start out as two separate pipes that merge in the muffler. I have no idea, I'm not a mechanic by any stretch.

I already bought a 10" BAMuffler from him, so I'm good.

    Will do this.

One thing that is odd is that some stock systems drone and some don't. Maybe it will all settle down after break-in.

Just curious. Is there are certain speed range, or rpm, or driving condition that you notice it? In my experience, 50 to 65 mph in high gear and light throttle to maintain or fluctuate speed (especially on an incline) was the sweet spot for drone. The engine rpm is low, and the truck kind of lugs.

There’s no break in. The exhaust is welded together.

They all do this. The tune in the ecu determines its severity. It’s caused by how much valve overlap there is, and when it occurs.

a helmholtz resonator will make it stop.

Reach down and shift to a lower gear to keep from lugging, you bought the Sequential Shifter; you have more choices than "D"

Yep, if you'd rather shift with the throttle instead of gears.
