4.7 timing belt

An Aisin water pump is part of the kit I bought for the timing belt change, to include a tensioner and a couple bearings.

 

That's a great point about other parts breaking down. Better safe than sorry. And I enjoy doing these kinds of projects anyway...……..keeps me out of the bars

 

I use zerex in my truck and in my sister's Nissan. Great product for foreign vehicles.

 

Just did my timing belt on Sunday. 161k miles. Belt looked pretty decent but did have one or two barely visible cracks. The bearings (tensioner and guide) were in slightly worse shape. They still spun fine but had some 'whirr' to them unlike the replacements. I bought the Aisin kit from Amazon that has been referenced already by others.
I have some experience with timing belt replacement but since I'm pretty emotionally invested in this vehicle and also didn't have a lot of time spare I paid a friend to help. He's a Toyota tech that had a couple of tools which made the job much quicker/easier. He also brought the coolant and FIPG compound.
His opinion was that the belt was original. We did
Water pump
O-rings
Pulleys
T Belt
Tensioner
Crankshaft Seal
Crankshaft seal may not have been necessary but he said 'while we're in there' and I figured for $10 might as well.
Job took us about 2 1/2 hours and in the end needed 2 3/4 gal of coolant to top off.
Gave him a couple hundred bucks for his assist and knowledge and now for less than $400 I have the peace of mind that it was done right and the confidence to do it myself in 7 years.

 

Was the FIPG for the crankshaft seal? I dont remember using that when I did the TB change.

 

It seems I scored a heavy weight to work in my corner. My neighbor, the mechanic that is going to assist me in replacing the timing belt, came over this evening to discuss the issue and cement the date for the weekend of the 16th and 17th, weather permitting. While we were talking he decided to show my grandson pics of a couple cars he was working on that he had loaded on his phone. It appears he builds show cars, classic hot rods at that. Mainly cars from the '30s, in stock form you'd expect to see Al Capone and company driving as they escort their Canadian whiskey south to Chicago during Prohibition. Now stripped down and with Chevy engines and Ford rear ends, hoods that lift forward, fat slicks in back and tiny tires in front, and paint suited to the genre. Interiors tucked and rolled, and on one, flame graphics that won my grandson over big time.

Strange how we met, seeing as how he lives right next door. I was sitting at my computer when I heard a sound like a lawn mower in my front yard. Getting up to see what it was, I found my neighbor on his John Deere riding mower, mowing my yard. This was our introduction. He continued to mow my yard twice a week all spring and summer and refused any compensation for his time and effort. I've since made good gifting him and his bride, and house sitting during their honeymoon while caring for his three dogs, but nowhere have I met his measure of thoughtful giving, etc. Heck, he even had his cute teen aged step daughters come to weed my landscaping until I purposefully chased them off, not wanting to be beholden to them as well.

It's nice to have a younger friend who sort of treats me like a surrogate father, as well as friend. But it has come with a problem, how does one achieve quid pro quo with such a friend?

Know a few folks that are similar, they don't expect anything in return they do it to because they like to. Offer to help him out from time to time, take them out to dinner, fill up his mower, just small things to show you appreciate it is all that's needed.

 

Oh I tried beer, offering to buy a case of Corona early on, only to be informed that he did indeed drink Corona and had several cases left over from the wedding party his family threw him and his bride. After hearing he needed a laptop, I offered up a very nice used gaming laptop with a custom video card which he finally accepted. Even then I almost had to press the issue before he decided to take it. It's all good, although I still think the ledger is heavily weighted on his side - that's a lot of mowing!

To those who did the timing belt and water pump replacement, was it necessary to have a gear/pulley puller? I note that the instructions in the service manual calls for the removal of both the cam and crankshaft pulleys when doing the replacement.

 

Beware the AISIN hydraulic timing tensioners

Some were defective

I suggest OEM for that part

 

Going from memory here, but I don't remember using a puller to remove the crankshaft pulley. I did make a long steel anti-rotation bar (maybe 3' long) bolted to the pulley so I could break the nut loose during disassembly and torque it back on when putting things back together.

It was for the water pump. The rectangular exit tube opening...

 

I changed mine at 240,000 miles and it looked a bit worn. Do the water pump while you're at it.

 

I’m just getting ready to do this now @ 228K miles. I have the Aisin kit and other parts.

Does it matter which FIPG I use on the water pump? Permatex black vs Toyota red? Or a better question, perhaps...what does Toyota specify for this application?

I'm about to tackle this job with my social distancing time. I bought the kit from Amazon but I have noticed some of the most recent reviews are saying the water pump is having issues going out within 8-14K miles. Has anyone hade simular issues?

 

I just put one in a week ago so I hope that isn't the case. And to add this is the first I've heard of this issue...

 

Just had installed yesterday. Really hoping no leaks.

 

If you have the Aisin kit, these parts are the same as stock. Properly installed, the water pump should easily last the duration until the next belt change. I had no issues with mine (two belt changes).
