Who here uses their truck for towing or hauling for work and what kind of work do you do?

I'm going to be using mine for towing motorcycles in an enclosed trailer nationwide.

Only slightly off topic: are you starting a business doing this?

Can I assume that your truck came with factory towing pkg.?
Air bags and a Hellwig rear sway bar... maybe a weight distribution hitch.

Yes I do have the factory tow package. And to get my truck ready I'm going to be doing the timing belt and water pump this month, the upper and lower ball joints, spark plugs, I've already changed all the fluids, I'm going to be getting a set of the 12-hole injectors from Dirty Deeds probably next month, I will look into the rear sway bar. And they need weight distribution hitch I'm definitely going to get.

Nice. I know there's demand for quality service in this field. Good luck!

Make sure the brakes are good to go, lubricate everything that can be lubed and look at the wheel bearings

Are the radiator and thermostat healthy?

In the towing for hire industry the cost to do it right isn't cheap with used gas trks having over 100,000 miles.
I'd replace the trans before you start. You'll avoid the nightmare from happening when a 1,000 or more miles from home.:)

The brakes are all brand new. Bearings are good.

Brand new radiator and thermostat. Previous owner hit a deer and busted radiator so I had no choice on that one. Would have done it anyway. And new Zerex pink antifreeze.

Thanks everybody for your insight and comments.

I use mine for Pipeline surveying, where I'm forced to do minor rock crawling not going to crazy. I towed my small RV a couple times when our company asked us to move but Its perfect for what I'm using it for.

I own a lawn service and use my 2004 Tundra as my main towing vehicle. I tow anywhere from a 7,000 lbs Kubota Tractor to my loaded equipment trailer with 3 ZTR’s, 4 weed eaters, 2 edgers, and about 15 gallons of spare fuel. Factory tow package. I love my truck.

I’ve towed extensively with my truck. It does good work, but depending on what kind of weight you tow and what kind of terrain you’re driving over makes or breaks it.

honestly I have a hard time recommending a first gen for towing professionally because fuel economy is so poor. $.25 a mile for fuel alone is pretty steep. A 3/4 ton diesel would cut down to $.17 a mile or maybe less depending on the weight of the trailer.

Now obviously the Tundra is a great, reliable truck, but that reliability comes at a huge price, especially if you’re putting on 30,000 miles a year. That’s $2,500 a year in fuel saved assuming 30k miles.

you should really do some hard math on costs. That’s my recommendation.
