What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

@Professional Hand Model In total agreement that electrical output would be the determinant in this instance, with longevity probably being a close second. And as pointed out, that extra oomph may be the difference on whether you start your truck or not in the north, where winter temps thicken the oil's viscosity and taxes the battery's charge.

 

Sprayed my under chassis with PB Blaster for the 4th time since last spring. I feel the metal is hitting saturation point, especially up in the front part under engine where the frame is closed and all boxed in. Let her soak in a few weeks a do another moly-b grease rub and that should do her for another 20 years.

I also sprayed the crap out of my leaf springs/shackles last week and also today. Man the ride is much smoother! Think I’ll inject some moly-b grease with the needle next week in between the leafs as best as possible. Maybe wedge them open with these metal shims I scored on the tool box deal this last summer and inject away.

Filled out the salvage yard paper work for the Toy OG side steps and bought some black bed liner Rustoleum Spray from big box in preparation. Not sure how these will mount until they are in hand and do a dry fit. Nothing under the body rockers looks like its ‘factory ready’ for these so its wait and see. Probs will have to drill/self tap some holes and use short stainless metal hex bolts combo’d with washers. Throw some Fuze in there for extra security and sound deadening.

 

Ain't done nothing to 1st Gen today....drove 7 hours to be with Little Man in the Smokie Mountains for a week !

Going to try bleeding out the master cylinder again next week, then bleed the hell out of the system again. I have a funny feeling there is air trapped between master cylinder and abs.

 

Confirmed the 02’ has an ongoing cam(s) seal leaks. Looks to have been going on for years due to the long time clogged PCV blowing them both out.

The Mobil 1 Synthetic High Mileage has really swelled the gaskets around the engine block etc, but the cam seals not so.

Not sure to let this one go or tackle it as the leak looks to be trailing down inside the Timing Belt cover. @empty_lord Whats the call? Fix or let it be?

 

Wait till your next belt change. But keep an eye on it. And keep it clean

Thanks. This was my thinking when I asked you last week about the cam replace tutorial. You mentioned you had one and didn’t seem like a biggie to you. I’ll monitor it. I wiped off that area a few weeks ago and took some pics. Looked and took some pics today and there is some weeps glaze.

 

Not all that exciting, but my ac/heater stopped working (extremely low output). Replaced the blower motor which fixed the problem. Easy/cheap fix.

 

Yea as long as your not noticing it on the dipstick it’s not worth tearing the whole front end apart to replace it. Granted your cam seals are 10x easier than mine

 

Thanks. Dipstick has never seen a noticeable drop in level since the last few oil changes. Never any drops on the driveway. I’ll continue to monitor.

Next Timing Belt change is due in 50k more miles which equates to about 6 years of driving for me. This truck comes back up on its reinvestment reassessment to keep it in another 4 years. By then, I might be working for Toyota as a technician.

 

Lol. In 4 years it will be worth more, Hell in 4 years these new damn trucks will be so tied up in tech that they’ll be disposable 70k paper weights. (Exaggeration) I still can’t convince myself to own a new car/truck.
The 4 vehicles I own do all I need. The gas mileage in both trucks is all that blows.

 

I changed the oil in my front diff. It was gross. I also did noico sound deadening on the inside of the doors behind the door panels. It sound quieter to me. I cleaned up my door seals and ran some silicone on the edge of my windshield where I think it may be leaking a little on cold mornings. Oh and I did some tire shine for shitz&gigs.

I hate the rear door stops and I really hate the cruise control on this truck. The rest is pretty solid.

 

Oh god this cruise sucks. It holds a high gear way too long, looses 5mph then drops like 3 gears, speeds up to 7 over and will never stay where it’s set.

 

must be a 5speed/VVTI thing. I don't have that issue at all with my early 1st gen.

 

Yeah it's so bad that had I known this before buying one I would have probably just gotten another Titan. Now that thing had an awesome cruise. You could be decelerating and hit the set button and it would hold right freaking there. Ah well every one of the Titans had leaking manifolds. My Tundra leaks a little but nowhere near what my Titan did and it was moderate compared to some.

 

Well if your 4spd downshifted 2 gears after you set it at 75 you'd be doing something like 8000rpm haha. Really maybe it's just a 5spd thing.

 

i havnt had any issues with cruise on mine..
granted my reg cab is way lighter than the double cabs. may play a role in that.

this engine at 8k rpm would sound beautfiul

true. My cruise unlocks torque converter if you drop 1-2MPH below your set point, and if it doesn't gain speed with that it drops you to 3rd to bring you 2-3MPH over what you set it at. Gets annoying if you have a loud exhaust like me, but it sure does it's job well.

 

The annoying cruise control is a 5 speed thing. Lots of complaints about that, but it does hold speed better going downhill.

 

I'm with you I'll just stick with used Toyotas lol

it should work with cruise and o/d off. my tacomas do.. havnt tried with the tundra

 

It's better with 4.56 gears

 

Mine works fine. No issues.

 

I just used mine to and from Willow Springs Motorsports Park and had no issues other then the other idiots on the road that don't use their cruise control. The trip involves traversing a 3,000' mountain pass. CC holds steady and shifts smoothly as needed.

LOL - just for some perspective. In 1975 my parents bought a new class A motorhome (the big box style) that was just shy of 30' long. Loaded up with 6ppl & all their crap, a 30 gallon gas tank + a 40 gallon gas tank + propane & water tank, 2 waste holding tanks, Dodge 440 IIRC...
Dad could get that thing to return 12 MPG.
So your 15 MPG just has me laughing aloud.
The MPG on our trucks is truly primitive. (But so many other features make up for it.)
