What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Bought my first tundra a few weeks ago with 131k on it, 06 4.0 v6. So far I have changed the air filter, flushed my rad, changed my rear diff fluid, ran a bottle of ams oil brand fuel system cleaner through the gas tank, and removed and inspected my serpentine belt. the belt looked great still so I put it back on. Never had taken one off so good to know how to do it anyways.

 

Found a brake booster on my porch. Unfortunately my wife invited her whole family over this weekend so no telling if I will be able to install it.

 

Sounds like the perfect time to install it lol

 

Depends if her little nieces come over or not. If not then I'm installing, if they do I'm running around yelling "don't touch that!"

 

Hey I have an 01 3.4 V6. Is yours manual or automatic? Just curious as i dont hear of many of the manual versions, which mine is. Mine is also 4wd as well. Just wanted to know!

 

Gotta say not having that bad bearing anymore has made highway driving enjoyable again. Its so quiet!

 

Probably only works with trucks that have body control modules.. which is only the double cabs none of reg or access cabs

Does this mean that only the 04-06 double cab models have keyless entry?
Been wondering about this. My 03 AC didnt come with a remote for locks. My 03 Tacoma did. Was hoping I could add this feature to the Tundra somehow... But maybe that not an option?

 

The keyless on older trucks was a seperate module. Either factory installed or dealer installed. The box I added to my 05 was a factory keyless out of an 04 I believe. The connectors were buried up in the dash.

But 03 is different. Tvip systems are probably the most common which was dealer installed

 

What does it do? Control body roll?

 

Our tundras came with one of two.different keyless systems. One installed by the factory and one installed by the dealer.
Mine didnt come with any key fobs but it had keyless so I tried both types of fobs from Amazon or eBay until I got one to program properly.

 

According to Toyota dot com, it seems mine was factory installed on my '02 Access Cab which came with Toyota Vehicle Intrusion Protection RS3000 keyless entry - lock/unlock the doors, monitor window breakage and disable starter.

 

It takes over the function of the intergration relay in our trucks. It controls your locks, windows, etc.

 

Another gorgeous day in the neighborhood Continued with the plug change out from yesterday doing drivers side. Condition not surprisingly was similar to passenger side. All coil packs and stems looked good physically. Took rubber boots off to check for any cracks or arching tracks? Removed air intake hose including air filter box from throttle body for general cleaning. Removed/Cleaned MAF sensor with CRC MAF cleaner. Removed throttle body away from the 2 standoff bolts so I could maneuver it and clean as much as I could with CRC Throttle Body cleaner. Neither the MAF nor Throttle body were in that bad of shape but they were shiny clean when put back. Overall given she was running pretty good, I do feel she responds/sounds much better than before.

While removing the PCV valve hose completely to better maneuver throttle body for cleaning, noticed not only is PCV valve next on the list but the 3/4in? hose was cracked and brittle on ends but trimmed a little off on each end for now for somewhat better fit.

One question that I could search for but rather ask here....the Air Filter box TOP has what appears to be a non-replaceable secondary screen/filter the same size as primary filter ?
Anything one can do to improve/clean that item ? Meant to take picture but forgot.

Below pic shows along with pic from yesterday that all plugs were in same condition and the gauge pic is an after. The before/after RPM's remained approx as shown, halfway between 500-750.

 

Never realized there was a charcoal filter? in the box. Found this today when going back in time to catch up on this site after being locked up in St. Barts jail for two months.

Would love some feedback from others on this. Does it get dirty? Need replacing? Etc?

 

I used this gizmo to change out the brake fluid. I always just sucked out the master cylinder with a turkey baster and refilled with fresh fluid once every 12-18 months.
I was pleasantly surprised to find the fluid coming out being mostly clear ~ not dingy like I had anticipated.
I bought 60 oz. of brake fluid ~ way too much, and only used maybe 16 oz. to complete the task.
I'll have to say, this tool made the job a breeze. I'm tickled to have this behind me now.
The last thing I want is a piston in the caliper or wheel cylinder binding up or leaking due to the hygroscopic capabilities of brake fluid.

Did not do this today, but wanted to share. I acquired a front driver seat out of a 2005 tundra AC and put it into my 2002 tundra. it bolted right up and I had to swap the seat belt receiver. now I have the leg room I need (I’m 6’4)

 

Spent $1100!
Scheduled my timing belt/water pump replacement for Monday and ordered new brakes and pads to install next weekend.
Next up is some 5100s then new tires.

 

Remember to exercise both of your 4WD Buttons at least monthly per the Tundra Manual. I believe the ask you to drive about 10 miles in 4Hi.

I do the 4Lo activate in/out when sitting at long stop lights and listen for the ‘clunk’. Never drive in 4Lo on streets.

 

No mine is automatic and 2wd Manual tundras arnt easy to find. I found one in my price range but it had 240k miles on it so I was like nahhh.

 

The new seat provides more leg room?

 

Yes, they changed the access cab seats for the 05-06 model. The seat track is different allowing the seat to go back further. But it still bolts up to the existing holes in the floor. I found this out after driving my 06 that used to belong to my dad. Whenever my dad would have to drive my 02 he was like damn, the seat doesn’t got back further? It’s so much better with the new seat. I have not measured, but judging from the bend in my knee I think it goes back 1-2 inches more. I highly recommend searching for one if you’re a tall guy (34-36 inseam) it has to be from the 05-06 access cab. The double cab seats won’t work because the brackets are different.

 

I was thinking about that the other day. I haven't used my 4wd since I built my suspension. Need to do that as soon as I get her back on the road.

I started running my intake to the cowl. Still need some plastic tube and a rubber 90. I got my brake lines all put on and the front suspension is now all painted with steel it. Still need to test drive it with the new springs, but the ride height looks damn near perfect.

 

well, I did a fair bit to the Turdna today.

First off, I polished the nasty brown faded headlights and fog lights. They look SO much better.


Oh and also, new leaf springs got installed. The rear end is so much stiffer that it was before (hehe). I have a wierd sharp clunk when I put it in reverse though. Sounds like it’s coming from the drivers side.




Then I started making a new wiring harness for my cab visor lights.






and got it all installed and working! I used some el cheapo Amazon LED bulbs. They seem to work good. They’re very bright.

 

Replaced a rear U joint. It took a cheater bar on my 20 ton press to get one of the caps out but boy....that was it. I've been replacing worn out parts all week but that U joint was responsible for about 80% of my problems.

 

Cleaned up and painted the skid plate in steelit black. Trucks done. Just gotta go get it and pay for it all.
