Any feedback on oil usage? 1st Tundra after Four 4runners. Just about 30k miles and had to put in a quart. 5.7 L, 4x4. Mostly highway miles. No off roading( yet)
None of the 4runners ever used a drop.

Are you certain it was full from the last oil change? I have 37k on my 2017 and it doesn’t lose a drop.

I posted a week ago about having to add 1.2 qts to my 5.7 w/ 80k. Toyota would consider it “normal”; tho it’s not. Nobody else seemed to have an issue. I’m currently monitoring...swapped pcv valve, sparks and gonna be doing a BG engine clean thinking it could be a stuck piston ring...who knows, trucks runs perfect anyways. Maybe Mobil 1 put water in a batch...what oil do you use?

Who did the last oil change? Most Jiffy Lube places only give you 5 quarts and you have to buy the other 2.7 quarts. I could see the "tech" assuming the trucks only take 5.

Mine always gets 8. That 1/10th if a quart doesn't raise the level in the pan 1/16".

I've always used 8 quarts for oil/filter changes and have never needed to add any makeup fluid.

    8.5 qts. W/filter change.
    7.9 qts. Oil only.

Our Tundra or 4Runner does not burn a drop between changes.

Our Accord really burns the oil......

My 2019 Tundra Trd Pro 5.7 Non Flex Fuel purchased on Jan 21, 2019 with 9 miles now Oct 12 2019 with 5272 miles no leaks has been parked in my garage same spot for 1 month I decided to drive it cause I’m going to be installing a new sound system so checked engine oil before taking it out and to my surprise was low 1 quart Toyota dealer 1 mile away so I purchased 2 quarts of oem 0w20 for 15 dollars from them I still have not gone for my 10k oil change I explained the situation to the service writer who told me to leave it he will love to do warranty work on my truck I bought my 2 quarts and ran out I can’t stand the dealer I guess I will talk to the dealer I got the truck from which is 20 miles away about what I found and what they think about it me being a certified automotive tech for 24 years wants to believe nothing is wrong all engines burn oil and have oil consumption even BMW allows 1 quart a month but I don’t drive this truck much I drive my 1999 Honda Odyssey most of the time with 165k miles and I do a full synthetic oil change once a year and I have never added 1 quart of motor oil during those 12 months

I bought it in winter so I rarely drove it only on clean days I live in chicago so didn’t really drive it till spring all vehicles are broken in at the building plant so didn’t do anything special unlike when I build new engines were I keep RPM’s under 2k for first 500 miles and use break in oil for start up. I don’t drive aggressive but I have tested it once or twice it sounds and feels great but was a little surprised to see it low 1 quart I did check the oil wen it came off the show room to make sure it was full

Just turned over 55k. From what I can tell I haven’t burned a drop. 8 qts on the money for every oil change. Mobil 1 0-20

With only 389 miles, I would have to conclude that you received a short factory fill, or...your dipstick does, in fact, lie.

It is very difficult to believe that your brand new truck could burn that much oil in 389 miles without some highly visible indications. The only way I could be convinced otherwise if you had checked your oil level before you ever drove if off the lot, and it was then certified to be between the marks. My old 22RE dipstick lied...I fixed that by putting in the specified amount of oil with filter change and filing a notch on the dipstick.

Change the oil yourself now, put in 8 quarts, and see where it is on the dipstick. No need to hold out for exactly 10K miles. I did my first change at 1000 miles to drain out any manufacturing and early wear-in debris.

Make sure when you're checking your oil level with the dipstick that the truck is on level ground.

I would drive it hard for a while, if its a piston ring issue it may help. I have broken in 5 new Toyota motors and they all responded very well to hard driving within the first 1000 miles. I personally put over 100k miles each on 3 of them and none used oil or had any issues. My 19 has 2000 on it and hasnt used any oil, but I changed the oil at 500 miles, so current fill only has 1500 so it may be too soon to tell for my truck.

Factory fill never makes it past 1k in any new motor in my house. Toyota factory fill has been tested and is just standard Toyota brand 0w-20, so no reason to leave it in as it is not a special break in oil.

Toyota tech here... ok so guys it’s a good idea to do a early oil change anyway around 1,000 to flush out the metal shavings. Then do your next oil change at 5,000 mi. Then every 5k there after, I don’t recommend 10k oil change intervals unless you do pure highway driving over short periods of time (6 month span). Toyotas recommendation is 5k if you do stop and go ect . Being that you have 5k your technically due for an oil change. A top of at the very least. Also these engines have the basic can break in done on the bench w/ a machine spinning the longblock before the engine assembly is completed but these engines do still require 1,000 break in, basically don’t race the engine, don’t keep the Rpms constant for long periods, absolutely no towing for 500 mi. Hope this helps

915tundra just posted the most sane and practical oil advice.

My last 3 new vehicles have all been broken in the same way. For the first 500 miles i warm the motor up by driving gentle, then race it like a raped ape.

Never burned a drop of oil after this. Babying an engine doesn’t help it.

I was reading an old post about using 0 w 30 synthetic castrol "made in Germany" supposedly the best stuff made. Is it ok to put that in a Tundra vs the 0w 20? Live in north jersey w winter trips to Vermont so can get to -10°F occasionally

If you live in such a cold climate why the need for a thicker oil?

Have some oil usage which scares me! I had Four 4runners and never used a drop of oil.... My 2018 5.7L Tundra has 35k miles on it and uses a quart or more..... New Jersey is not that cold was just mentioning winter trips to Vermont to provide info for those who know much more than me about this topic

All engines are different and different at different times in their life.

I've seen this with several vehicles of different brands, they burn very little (can't read the diff on stick after 5K miles), most for the 1st 90K to 135K then they start using some oil. Its got to be expected, I mean rings wear things.

All have stayed at needing only 1-1.3 qts per 5K with the exception of a Prius, it uses closer to 2.5 per 5K, started using slightly heavier oil and that dropped to 1 per 5K.

But I would expect new engines (those under 75K) to use a "negligible" amount, meaning I can't read the diff on the stick.

On the other hand, our beloved owner's manuals say we can expect up to 1qt per 1000 miles of oil consumption. So unless its using much more than that, they won't do anything about it under warranty.

Luck and enjoy those Toyotas. : ^ )))

My 2007 5.7 has 290k and I use all of the available RPMs as often as I can, I typically top off the oil level between changes, normally with just 1/2 a quart.
