What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Yeah he mentioned the banjo conversion briefly. I think I'll hold off on that one now that I have the lines that he got from solo. I do have another set of extended lines now. Hopefully I can use 1 as a spare and 1 for the rear. I'm not sure what fittings are on the rear but I'm hopeful.

 

Well today I signed paperwork to get my 1st gen a big brother... a 2nd gen tundra. 2011 Rock Warrior w/ 100k miles The 1st gen isn't going anywhere, but I have to admit that I have always loved the 2nd gens. My fav truck ever. No contest for me! I'm driving 4 hours one way to go pick it up Wednesday.


I now have all the needed parts to do my front end on the 1st gen.

Eibach just came out with an upper control arm kit that is a rebranded SPC it appears. The offset ball joints are SPC, logo is right on them. Got a good deal on them, and the shocks/struts/coils are all Eibach as well so I figured why not. Also have complete new OEM lower control arms and OEM Lower ball joints. Going to tackle this project soon. I'm also going to get my custom bed built before winter hits.

 

Where did you get the Eibachs from? Saw those recently and thought about trying them out.

I also have their shocks and springs on the front end.

 

I got the eibach UCA's from Summit or Jegs, can't remember. I got $50 off though and free shipping. So they were less than Amazon.

The struts/springs/coilovers were from Wheeler's. They put the coils together for me and installed new isolators as well.

 

how do you like those? Did they add the 2.5" in front as they advertise? I'm assuming you installed them on the bottom clip?

 

I like the ride quality. Much better than the leaking stock TRD coilovers they replaced. Unfortunately, I forgot to take before/after measurements. I would estimate I got maybe 1" or 1.5" of lift, certainly not 2.5". It's still raked from back to front. I'm guessing because of the extra weight of the DC compared to the AC.

 

I'm in an AC, so I hope I get the lift I'm after. If not, I'm moving mine up 1 clip and seeing how that does!

I still haven't heard back from ICON after emailing them twice. Their customer service is non-existent. @MDobb79 did they ever respond to you?

 

I was changing my front brake pads Friday and when I turned my wheel to get the bolts tighten I heard a clunk? I thought it might have been the jack stands settling so I finished and went to the driver's side and noticed the wheel was sitting out at the top ? Thought it was the lug nuts but the upper ball joint fell out!!! It was hanging by the rubber around the joint! I couldn't believe it! I had driven it pretty hard through some curves the day before.I checked the other side and it was going bad also.They were the sealed type and they were badly rusted! I replaced them both with the greasable alimite type.I could have easily wrecked my truck!! I live in a rural area with lots of curves! I am telling this to tell everyone to CHECK YOUR BALL JOINTS ON YOUR TRUCK!!! The best way I have found is to jack up the truck at the lower control arm and raise the tire a couple inches. Then use a pipe and place under the bottom of the tire and pull up on the tire. There shouldn't be any movement from the ball joints! If there is any,then please replace them!! I really don't want to hear of someone getting hurt or killed over a cheap part that controls your steering! I'm a fire fighter and I have worked some bad wrecks over the years.

Sounds like it should be a nice truck. I probably would have gotten a 2nd gen if my wife could have wrapped her head around (giggity) the fact that a 2nd gen access cab is about the same seat size as a 1st gen double cab. I still can't stand the 2nd gen interior though. I still wouldn't mind the about 100hp more.

Not in the rear seat. 1st Gen DCs have about 3 more inches of leg room and it's VERY noticeable if you are adult size...hell, even if you are kid size. The DC tacos and 2nd Gen Tundra's have similar amounts leg room in the back. My 14 yo daughter and 9 yo son did not like the back seat of my '17 DC Tacoma, but they love my o6 DC Tundra's back seat.

I agree 100% about the 2nd Gen Tundra interior. The 2014+ dash is better...but still not great.

 

not sure about that burnout! The tires on it are at 85% so I'd like to keep those going as long as possible!

Also agreed about the size. We went local and looked at a crewmax and a double cab (2nd gen). The crewmax is massive on the inside. It's nice but wow you pay a LOT more for these. Like a dodge mega cab size. however it makes the bed so small. Really bothered me. Then we checked out the double cab and it has plenty of room. Just my opinion though! I am 6'2" and I was able to adjust the front seat to where it's comfy, then promptly seat in the back without moving the front and I was comfortable. I mean I didn't have as much room as the crewmax, but I had as much room as the back seat of my friends malibu. It was actually fine. My wife is 5'4" and I don't have any friends taller than me so it should be good! Plus the bed size is where I want it as well.

This just means I can build the 1st gen up faster because I have a reliable 2nd vehicle. Or maybe the same speed, since this 2nd gen does cost money, lol.

Also I bet I'm the minority, but I love the interior of the 2nd gens. I just bought a 2008 chevy silverado for a screaming deal. The interior was so cheap and it just felt absolutely awful. I hated it. I sold it within a month of purchasing it and lost money, which I am fine with because I absolutely hated it. The 2nd gen tundra interior is so far ahead of that thing. Plus I love the large center console/shifter look on the 2nd gens.

I will definitely be posting pics of the 2nd gen, but I'll be shunned over to the 2nd gen side... Sad really.

*Mini rant - I posted 1 thread over there of a 2nd gen I liked. Just asked for advice if it was a decent deal, were the extras worth it, anything I should look out for, that kind of thing. It had over 125 views and not 1 single reply. I put in the title I was a 1st gen owner looking for 2nd gen advice to purchase. Totally ignored. I know it's petty, but that really bothered me. Us 1st gen guys jump at the chance to help others, even if it is an answer we have provided 100 times.

I've never gotten over 10 posts on any other forum in my life, so the fact that I am active here is huge haha. I'll always be 10x more active over here with the 1st gens. The 2nd gen will be more of a pavement princess, the 1st gen is going to get built!

 

I have a 2000 limited TRD access cab and a13 SR5 Crewmax.The 2000 is the one the ball joint fell out of.Sorry about the confusion.

Im very glad I got a DC instead of an AC. So much room in the back seat for the fridge, camera shit, dog and snacks.

I'm also getting geared up for my annual "big" October trip to Utah. Hope to spend three weeks mostly south of I-70 and east of US 89, with maybe a smidgen of Colorado and northern Arizona thrown in.

I'll try to remember to post pics of my setup once I get fully loaded. My rig is, um, a tad less polished.

In the spirit of the thread, I've been busy, as I said, getting ready for the big trip. Lots of changes, none really exciting for this group. I'll try to do a writeup later, though, as some findings (regarding, for example, Beamtech headlights and LED bulb replacements) might be useful for others.

-Installed ARB awning
-Replaced weather seal on camper shell door
-Installed USB and cig adapter, voltmeter, in camper shell
-Installed...creative...rooftop boxes
-New headlight housings (meh) and bulbs (ugh)
-Replaced some interior bulbs with LEDs
-New steering rack bushings (polyurethane)
-New sway bar bushings (polyurethane)
-New tires (BFG KO2 in an apparently oddly narrow/tall ratio)

Sweet. How much wind noise do you get out of that new rack and box setup?

 

That is an excellent question that I will be able to answer in a week or so. The base roof rack is fine. It's made of Frontrunner universal track (bolted to the shell), Frontrunner feet and two load bars, then my own ghetto-rigged 2x6s for the main rack. The noise from that is minimal, if any. I've been running that setup for just over a year now, and if there is noise I don't notice (and noise bugs me, so I think I'd notice).

I haven't actually driven with the new boxes on it though. In the past with other configurations the wind noise isn't noticeable, but we'll see with these.

I think I did notice some noise from the ARB awning brackets (without the actual awning on them) but I've been making a lot of changes all at once, which is not a good way to isolate issues. Just don't have the luxury of time to make one change at a time.

My general strategy, though, is to not have all that stuff up there for general use - this is my daily driver. Most of the big trips I do are northern AZ and southern Utah, so I usually drive up I-17 to Flagstaff - at 75mph - with all the roof stuff inside the shell. Then I stop at a friend's there and move the recovery boards, jerry cans, awning, and roof boxes to the roof.

In other words, most of the time that the stuff is actually on the roof I'm off-road doing 15mph max - wind noise isn't much of a concern.
