2018 5.7 Ticking

2018 CM 5.7 here... Flex fuel (Only use 87 regular)

Serviced every 5000 miles.

Only 28,000 miles.

Hearing a ticking sound in the engine compartment. Can hear it pretty good from the passenger side front fender well and from the driver seat with doors and windows closed.

Just curious if anyone has had this issue?

It is under warranty and it will be taken in for evaluation.

 

My 2018 with 20,000 miles ticks too, and comes from approximately the same location you described. Every Toyota I have ever owned has had a tick to it

What kind of oil you guys use? Brand & grade?

 

I have found that when I use Mobil 1 0w-20 Advanced Fuel Economy the upper end of the engine is loud and makes a little racket. I can hear a ticking noise. I had my 20k Toyota are done last month and after the change it was quiet. I asked them what they use and of course it was Toyota 0w-20. The 2 times I have used the Mobil AFE it has been loud. That particular oil must be a little then even for 20w. On the next change I am going with the new Shell Rotella Truck formulation and see if it stays quiet.

I like Mobil oil but the AFE grade is loud and creates a racket in my Tundra for some reason.

Is ticking a new thing or did it always do that?
My car had a loud ticking sound when new but it got quiet after a couple month and I hadn't even change oil yet. Break-in maybe ...

Maybe it will get noisy again getting old. lol

Walmart special, generally. SuperTech Synthetic or Pennzoil/Quaker synthetic. I use 0W-20, or whatever the manual calls for. I change it every 10K miles (non flex-fuel).

I used to build engines, mostly older carbureted engines. I have always been a Pennzoil/Quaker fan. If you have ever disassembled/rebuilt an engine that used either... there was film and sludge. It looked bad, but honestly I have put many, many miles on my engines with no leaks. I had a camshaft go flat on me, but I had over 200K miles on an International 345 Wedge that I neglected.

If there is an API stamp on the bottle and it is cheap, I am buying it.

 

Normal. The 5.7 is a noisy motor. I like to think of it as “the chattering of reliability”. Sounds like it’s ticking sometimes but it’s just the variable valves doing their thing. Don’t over think it. Enjoy your truck!!

A former engine designer friend (retired from GM) recommended Rotella for classic Vettes designed to use heavier oils like 10W40 and leaded gasoline. I believe his recommendation was based on Rotella having more ZDDP than general use motor oils. Since it is formulated for heavy duty diesel engines, does it come in 0W20 grade?

Edit: Just googled Shell Rotella. Rotella comes in several products and grades from full synthetic (T6), synthetic blend (T5) to conventional. Originally intended for diesel trucks, Shell has just introduced a Rotella Gas Truck Motor Oil that comes in 0W20, 5W20, and 5W30.

 

Shell just released a new line of Rotella Gas Truck oil and it is 0w-20. Have not ran it but we are running them in a few vehicles at work. GM 5.3 and 6.2 and it has quieted them down also so hopefully it works as good as the dealer blend Toyota oil, which is Mobil 1 with a few differences.

 

I've read that Mobil 1 AFE can be noisy in this engine. I went from TGMO to Mobil 1 EP and didn't notice any difference in noise level.

 

It’s the VVT. There’s a lot of threads about it.

 

As Jrharvey mentioned go with a premium octane fuel as a test that always reduces the chatter for me!

Be careful with ZDDP. It can foul the catalyst rich surfaces of a converter.

My 3.4 liter V6 in the T100 has ticked for all of its 263,000 miles.

Amsoil for 21 years; bikes, trucks, cars, race bikes. The Rotella T6 can be had for super-deals in the 5 gallon pails w rebates to mail in.

 

I agree and have also found that when I have used Mobil 1 0w-20 Advanced Fuel Economy in the past, the upper end of the engine is loud and makes a little racket. This has been true of my FJ Cruiser, 4Runner, and now Tundra. All have been trouble free for miles and miles and miles. They all quiet down a bit if you use 5W-20. That's what I run in the summer and is allowed per the owners/service manual.

 

Good point. My friend's rec was for using the old diesel truck Rotella in 60's-70's Vettes without catalytic converters. It appears that the Rotella brand has been broadened out into virtually all services, not just heavy duty trucks.

 

Try (3) things; go to ethanol free fuel, you'll probably see about a 10% increase in your MPG, and you are less likely to get water in your fuel.

Switch to the appropriate Amsoil synthetic, you can go about 10K on an oil change, but swap out the oil filters at 3500 and 7K. (Within that 10K mile window.) Change intervals vary on which oil you buy, your usage of the truck, and your budget.

Lastly, and most important; when you first start up the vehicle, give it about 60 seconds before you go anywhere. The purpose is NOT to "warm up the engine" but to get oil pressure at 100% in the head before putting a load on the engine. Old Ducati trick that works wonders in EVERYthing with cams and valve-trains.

 

Maybe the tick tick tick is just a reminder... Toyota was started by making textile machines so we just have large powerful sewing machines under our hoods!

 

I forgot about this thread and I posted earlier about Mobil 1 AFE 0w-20. I buy at least 8 gallons at a time as after rebate it is only $12/gallon. It is loud in both our 4Runner and Tundra! I changed the oil in both 2 weekends ago and used the Shell Rotella Gas Truck 0w-20. Both vehicles are completely quiet with no valve train noise whatsoever. It has completely quieted the engines down. Looks like to me that the Shell Rotella truck oil is in the "thicker" side of 0w-20 oil. As mentioned before we are now using this oil in our company gas trucks at work and they are quieter for sure now also.

My noise is for sure valve train. Has nothing to do with fuel or the injectors. 100% sure the noise is valve train. It is feint and not bad, but for sure there with Mobil 1 AFE. Probably would rock all the way to 500,000 miles.....

Call me crazy, and not being mean but I do not see how in any form premium fuel will calm down the valve and lifter noise? Has nothing to do with it? Only thing it can effect is the bottom of the valves in the combustion chamber and keep them clean?

 

I agree on the fuel. I try and run top tier for a better cleaning of 87 octane. Figure if I run it and top tier I’m still getting cleaned. I fun Costco 99% of the time

There's good reasons that the diesel community has used Rotella for years, synthetic or regular. Fluids and filters is the diesel mantra.

Mobil 1 starts to literally burn off around the 3500-5000 mile mark, and you have to monitor the levels if not changing it out.

Yes, ethanol-free gasoline has less water in it, and therefore your (electronic) fuel pump is LESS LIKELY to die, wear out, or make strange noises.
